Heidi’s actress was the best singer here, but only because she displayed more emotion, she displayed anger, deep sadness and guilt about everything, anger that Evan did what he did, guilt and sadness over feeling she wasn’t good enough, all of the feelings have different ways of expressing themselves, like the subtle voice cracks

She didn’t even feel negative emotion when Connor died because she felt Evan could replace everything Connor was in her life. As much as people hate “To Break in a Glove”, it’s the one scene where Evan makes a genuine connection with the Murphys, specifically Connor’s dad. As for Zoe, she kind of straddled the line and wanted Evan to have a deeper connection with her but was hung up on his relationship with Connor and couldn’t reconcile with the fact that was supposedly friends with the person that mistreated her for so many years.

When I first saw this song without watching the entire musical, I thought this song was in the perspective of Connors mother asking him why he killed himself. “So you found a place where the grass is greener. So you jumped the fence to the other side. Was it good? Are they giving you the life I could never provide?” “Well I hope you’re proud of your big decision.” < I thought that was a grieving mother angrily asking her son why he did what he did. Actually I don’t agree with that. It think it WAS Connor’s suicide note. Okay, hear me out I heard this from somewhere and I truly believe it, Connor didn’t write his own note, because when he read Evan’s he realized that someone had finally been able to verbalize what he had been feeling for probably his entire life. Evan wrote down exactly what he was going through. I mean think about it, Larry and Cynthia visit the school 3 days after Connor took the note from Evan, saying it was folded up in his pocket. Why was it folded up if Connor didn’t want them to find it huh? Why did he keep it in the first place? After he took it from Evan, he could have just thrown it out, or even if he kept it he could have crumpled it up or something, but no.. it was folded, artfully and neatly. Evan wrote Connor’s suicide note, he just didn’t do it on purpose

Okay so first I absolutely loved that you added some of the dialogue from the beginning to the piece, it really adds more depth to the story. Now I also have to fangirl over some of the choices you made. I love the that you spun the frame at one shot when it was Evan and his mother instead of keeping it a flat shot of his back and focused on her, added so much dimension. I gasped at that transition from Alana to Jared. So freaking smooth and good. The smearing of the ink on his hands? God like. Him grabbing Connor and Connor being with them in the end was so smart. I just loved the angles and expressions you chose. Very exaggerated and fun. As well as what and how you chose to show the people. Good job!

I can't believe they're leaving this out of movie. It's really the most powerful song in my opinion. We see how small Evan feels and we get to feel the same emotions and stress he's under through us being overwhelmed by people who are all upset at us. I think we really get to see it from everyone's perspective here, and we get to see how Evan feels but we also witness the anger and disappointment the other characters feel and its because of what Evan did. I just think it's a major loss for the plot development towards the audience for the movie because there is so many emotions this song conveys in 4 minutes and 36 seconds.

I get what the movie is doing even though I don’t agree with it. The movie left off some of the more darker tones and consequences because they wanted the movie to be more “family” friendly is what I read from the production team. They only wanted to touch the surfaces of some of these issues but not dive down too deep. If a streaming service picked this up instead of a theatrical release then I’m sure it would have kept its darker and grungey aspects as it does make the story feel complete. However, I will say that seeing Evan trying to find anyone that knew the real Conner and then bringing that to them still showed a little what Evan was trying to do with his lies. It might have gave them a little peace as he really wasn’t just the monster and even though Evan lied about it with him involved partly it was still true to Conner’s character. I think even the family understands more than they showed and may get it, but that still is no excuse for lying the way he did even if for good intentions at first. However, their trust is broken and that door has closed as being part of their life. The daughter especially wants to forgive him and still talk, but by the end of the movie she is still not ready, but that conversation was a start to who knows. At the same time Evan doesn’t need them anymore as he realizes that he needs to mend and work on relationships closer to his home such as the mother and possibly Jared. It just goes to show as Zoey said that thinks are not always “black and white!”

just google what animation means and that'll give you the image of what it is disney relied on delailed animation because they wanted to tell a story with a look of acctual real life movement that's drawn with multiple frames per second and it was done professionally and it's more famous that's why when people think about animation the first thing that pops up in their minds are desney or pixar the animation shown in this video is done at a shorter time span with less frames per second but you can see clearly what's happening in the video and the characters' interactions and gestures and the movement of the "camera" around them it is still conssidered animation disney= high quality animation high visuals this video = low quality animation high visuals

I do like that as Evan is shaking Conner and demanding he tell him how to “change the story” Conner simply shrugs and stares right at Evan. It’s a such a chilling reminder that Conner is technically a dead man, and whether you believe that the one we see after his death is his genuine ghost or a manifestation of Evan’s own consciousness, one thing is clear: Conner has NOTHING to say to Evan at this point because the dead both figuratively and literally can’t talk. Conner’s shrug and stare could also be seen as him nonverbally saying to Evan “figure it out yourself” because at the end of the day, Conner didn’t do anything. It’s all Evan’s lies that the public has filtered through the letters they believe are Conner’s, so it’s Evan’s mess to clean up, not Conner’s. Again, the dead can’t speak, and if one believes this to be Evan’s consciousness instead of Conner’s ghost, it means that Evan is technically telling HIMSELF to fix this problem, even as “the boat is about to sink”.

i just realized that majority of the shit that happens in dear evan hansen is evan's fault. evan's mom feeling remorse, alana and jared feeling used. i know that some isn't really his fault, but the plot of dear evan hansen is about this kid with social anxiety and how he manipulates his crush's family to think that his crush's brother and him were great friends. and he used jared and alana for that. he neglected his mom because he found out that the murphy's were nicer to him. only because the murphy's thought that their son, connor, and evan were good friends. when in reality they weren't.

It starts like a small lie you said without thinking, you felt anxious didn't kow what to do and it just popped out, and then it grows and grows and you can't take it anymore. You hope never had said that, you want to scape, to be alone, to take refuge in something, someone, but everything is so big now and the lie you never mean to say explode and you're in the middle, and everyone around is hurt and they blame you, and they're right, everything is your fault, but the one who feel the worse are you yourself. That's how it feels, that's how having anxiety feel, I've been there, heck I'm there right now. You didn't want it to end like this when it started, you didn't want it to start and don't know how to end the mess.

I love the inclusion of Connor in this. He’s not angry, or sad, he’s just indifferent. He’s not trying to help or make things worse, like he’s saying ‘This is what you wanted, right?’ I wish the musical would’ve included him more, even if he was just standing on stage doing nothing. It would give a great wary feeling of him still haunting everyone, him being the only one that really knows the full story, and the only one that really can’t tell it.

Destiny_xX You see, this is the problem with you suck ups, you think just because someone put in an effort it's the most *amazing* thing ever and no one should say anything otherwise, because it's *mean* and wrong. But the thing is I'm not saying it's wrong, if anything I'm very proud of this animator/artist. She took her time drawing every scene and layer probably worrying that her tablet would crash, there's not enough movement, maybe harsh criticism, etc... But what you don't understand is that people who criticise don't have to know how to animate and draw to know when something looks a little off (not bad). You think you're such a great fan, giving complements left and right, face it, anyone can do that. Do you know what everyone might not be able to do because ThEy'rE tOo NiCe, say what's wrong. Pure positive reinforcement isn't going to help anyone who's seeking to do better. But what do I know, I'm just a bitchy nobody who doesn't know what's talent if it's in my face. The anatomy was actually spot on and stylized according to the perspective, if you take up a personal problem with the stylized look then that's your issue. Personally I think the expressions on the faces are a bit too exaggerated but that's just my personal feeling. That was fucking intense; I absolutely love how fluid this is with both the expressions and body language. The way Heidi moves and the expressiveness from Alana and Jared and Evan and just- AGGHH You're so incredibly talented and words can't describe how much I love this. It's my new favourite animatic EVER. I'll never be able to get over Alana's hair and how you draw Jared in general and Heidi's amazing expressions and Evan!! Evan looks so good!!? In personal opinion, I think Zoe should be in Alana's place, and the ghost of Connor should be in Jared's place. If you really think about it, Jared and Alana knowingly put themselves in that situation where as Connor and Zoe where being used majorly. This song was about Evan realizing how bad he hurt those around him, so I feel that it would be so dang powerful to have the three people who he was majorly abusing (yes, he was abusing Connor by using him to get closer to Zoe) and being straight up toxic to, singing along with him as he starts to realize what he did. The three in this song represent his guilt, and that is why when he sings, "can't erase what I wrote in ink," the three in the back are so loud and dissonant to show the absolute mental turmoil (they are the voices in his head in a weird way) he is going through. Thoughts?

I agree with what you saying with Connor and Zoe in Alana and Jared's spots, but Alana didn't complete go into this knowingly, she didn't know the full situation like Jared did, she only knew about Evan trying to start the Connor project and trying to preserve Connor's memory and that is what Alana wanted to do. Also in the book for DEH, ( I never finished the play only the book so I don't know if it's the same), Evan wanted to raise money for the Connor project and after a week or two, he left Alana alone to do all the work for it even though he started it, he blew her off to go out with the Murphy's a couple of times too, so she was pretty upset with that.

He manipulated another family into feeling as though he's the only remnant of their dead son, and the narrative goes out of its way to somehow say anti anxiety meds are bad which.... Is not how chronic anxiety works. It was highly irresponsible of the play to make Heidi out to be the bad guy. She's not trying to "fix" her son as Evan put it, she's trying to give him tools to cope, Evan just doesn't feel like trying. He'd rather wait until something better comes along, and oh look would you look at that? A boy commits suicide and he accidentally involved himself, well better continue to ride this to it's conclusion. Heidi literally did nothing wrong. She cared about her son, awww boo hoo. As someone who has two chronic mental illnesses Evan can get bent.

With Dear Evan Hansen it really shows this sentiment I think: People are just people. They're not good nor bad, however their actions can be good or bad. Evan made a terrible mistake, which may have brought temporary happiness, to himself and others, but came at the cost of expoliting grieve. He's trying to mask that, and it all comes crashing down in this song. His mother has a right to be upset, so does Evan. Because he feels upset she isn't around much (which he interprets as her indirectly abandoning him) while his mother is upset because he did, in fact, directly abandone her. Despite her trying so hard to give him a good life.

A lot of people here aren’t really appreciating how horrible this actually is for Evan. As someone whose parents act kind of similar to Evan’s mum, I can say for sure that regardless of whether her outburst is justified or not, it is absolutely certain to damage Evan’s mental state significantly. He is effectively in the process of being convinced that he is just a bad person, someone who is unloving and manipulative and doesn’t deserve the good things in his life. And when someone convinced themselves of this, they start acting it out. They will start to push away any loving emotions, convinced that they’re just faking those feelings. And after enough time, they become that person. Evan’s response “it’s not my fault other people can” is incredibly concerning. “You’re the only good thing that’s ever happened to me” is a common enough sentiment that this sort of interaction happens a lot, and there are a few ways of reacting to it. Given that Evan genuinely believed his mum regretted having him, a conviction so clearly deeply ingrained that he would never believe her just saying something like that, him agreeing and trying to convince her that he still loved her would have meant he felt guilty about upsetting her and wanted to calm her down. The fact he didn’t do that means he didn’t feel guilty, or at least not guilty enough to open up at all. This could either mean he actually feels nothing for her, which would be incredibly concerning, or he’s used to the feeling of guilt to such an extent that he doesn’t feel any. Since he does seem to care at least a little about her, I think the latter is more likely, which means that he’s already experienced significant amounts of guilt over his life and is late in the process of convincing himself that he is a bad person.

If you listen to the song it's more the characters projecting other aspects of their lives onto Evan. Alana says he dragged her along but she was doing all the dragging and forcing, and jared talks about "playing who you need to play" which isnt what evan was doing, if anything it's what he was doing. Finally, his mom talks about him leaving and how she doesnt feel good enough, but evan never actually left her, he just stayed at ttthe murphys (mostly when his mom wasnt even home) his father was the one who left. Obviously Evan is in the wrong b,ut the characters act as if he manipulated them into this situation, and he didn't.

I’m angry at Jared and Alana because Jared was NEVER a good friend to Evan and borderline bullied him and knew what he was signing up for when he started writing emails with Evan and then Alana (who I love!) used Evan just as much as he used the Connor project because she wanted the clout and college credit. Evan’s Mom was never with him, so it’s not like it was really that wrong of him to spend time with other people while she wasn’t there. Being alone for too long probably worsened his depression and anxiety.

Basically Evans mom finds out about the Murphy's and gets pissed at him for jumping ship to another family because she has insecurities about how his father left for "something better", meanwhile Alana has discover Evans lie and Jared is just being an asshole because apparently he thought him and Evan were friends despite him treating Evan like shit through most of everything. It's pretty common with depressed and anxious people actually, people exacerbate the issue and then get pissed when that leads to poor decision making.

Okay so maybe I'm going to have a heart attack? Don't know though AHHHHHHH EVERYTHING WAS *SO GOOD!* The movements were elegant, the symbolism was hECCIN, just generally all of it! One thing I liked a lot was that on the scene where Heidi is looking at the flowers the lines weren't always in the same place, which shows a lot of how her and Evan's world was shifting. I liked your choice of audio, too. It was unexpected because I just assumed you would use Jared and Alana's too, but you didn't and it was still perfect! Also, Jared? Is beyond perfection? Alana's really good too? And Heidi was worry lines? And you flash the family a lot? And the end scene was great? And did I mention Jared? I just think (and I've never thought this as much as I have here before) that this... STYLE of art, and the way it's ANIMATED, just MATCHES the ENTIRE musical PERFECTLY. The same despair and emotion that I get from the entire musical is here, and i feel like I just listened to the whole soundtrack I'm such a mess. Keep going until you reach the sun!

Cool things I love about this!!: 0:23 You can literally SEE his mouth forming the letter "f" as he's about to say family 2:16 The aggressive curtain pull that works so on beat 1:48 This part with Evan's mom putting her hand on Murphey's table where Evan is eating with another family instead of her is just sooooo heart wrenching! 2:45 The walking away from his mom only to bump into Alana. This idea is just so cool and works so well 3:01 The transition from Alana to Jared is genius. 3:08 Jared's hand gestures here are so good and expressive 3:17 Ok I'm sorry but like this animation here is AMAZINNNNGG! 3:43 You portrayed so amazingly how Conner's whole character in the letters was really just made from something Evan wrote in ink. This part is probably my favourite. It's so genius. 3:38-3:59 Evan's whole breakdown here you animated with such EMOTION! These are just some of my favourite bits but this whole animatic is truly amazing. I always see Evan as a little selfish. He has this tendency to think about himself and how it affects him first. Making him overlook the way other people around him are also having a bad time. Evan, at least on the book, literally admits that he wants to go after his father, go to college close to him. The father that abandoned him and his mother, and left them to survive on their own. He doesn’t appreciate Heide or what she does just so he can have a average life as a teenager. I know how much it hurts to not have a parent around, but he never thinks about how she is trying her best to support him. He often forgets that he is not the only person with problems.

3:34 seen this animatic tons of times but just gotta comment; I adore how you captured that Look ™ where Evan is glaring at the floor. Because that is genuinely so realistic; if you’re under such extreme emotional distress but trying not to let it show, you tend to glare- compensating for the emotional distress by making yourself look like nothing’s wrong, which in turn comes out looking like something is _definitely wrong_ because it’s an overcompensation. And if you can’t look someone in the eye, you tend to glare at anywhere else; most common being the floor. Idk if I’m even making sense but the way you captured that very specific experience is so perfect

You've improved ever since 'If I could tell her'!! You made them move so much and smoothly that it looks like an animation without colors! Also, I love how you showed how frustration, anger and regret in a single expression of Evan! Plus the perspective and angles? It's definitely wholesome and actually really refreshing! I also love how you made their expressions actually match the tone of their singing. (This may be a common mistake for animators). The sarcasm, the anger, and just full hatred is displayed so well that I can't help but feel mad and sympathetic for Evan at the same time! Also how you made Evan got pissed at Connor even though it was clearly Evan's fault, just adds more detail and how Evan wanted to take the blame on someone else. (at least for me) Anyway, I'm really hoping future animatics from you soon! From the past year you've improved so much!

The issues I had with my mother are really clouding my view of this song. I know that it's not really how it is, but all I can see is a mother guilt tripping her son and throwing things like "well, sorry I couldn't give you everything" when it has nothing to do with the situation, trying to avoid acknowledging the real problems, like how the son feeling like he is being shamed for his depression or that the son believes the mother never tried to see who he really is. It feels like she doesn't realize that the provision of necessities and kind actions don't mean that much in a mother-son relationship if you aren't also actively building upon it with functional communication and proper emotional support. Instead of having an open minded discussion or even asking genuine questions which treat the son as an equal, she is discounting his feelings and throwing the world's biggest pity party. I know that none of this is quite what is happening, but that is what my relationship with my mother was like and it's hard not to see things that way. I understand I'm a little biased.

lightyagami77777 Yeah. I was thinking this way, too, because of my poor relationship with my mum. However, I think it’s about something bigger than that: everyone in the musical is dealing with a lot of mental issues, and these mental issues bring out the worst in people. Instead of being glad that her son has people who love him like a healthy person would, her mental issues are giving her a fear that she’s being replaced. A fear like this can make you say things that you later regret.

To an extent I can see where you're coming from but at the same time, parents have a right to be mad, especially in this situation where the mother has literally given her entire life to providing for her son and trying to give him a good future. So of course it will break her heart to find out what he is doing becuase he IS replacing her to an extent so she has every right to be angry and express said anger.

Djinn C The thing is, your parents chose to have you. They chose to have you to make THEM happy and providing for your child is the bare minimum requirement to be a parent. Children don’t owe their parents anything.

@@djinnc9449 I don't have my own kids, but I have a few nieces and a nephew that I help take care of. Their mother is absolute crap. I would give anything for them to find more people who cared about them, even if they distanced themselves from me when they did. Having more good people that care about you is always good. I love them and I know that if they walked away from me it would be because I'm in the wrong, not them. Also, if you help someone or do something for them and then complain about "look what I do for you," then you aren't doing it for them. You are doing it to tell yourself that you are good.

I feel like a point this song illustrates that goes over so many peoples heads is that Evan is SURROUNDED by broken and self centered people who are damaged in their own ways, and yet he is the main one treated like something that's broken or damage, here he is turned on by three people who THINK they helped him when really they used him and neglected him more than the people who were unaware of his existence and it's only when his mistakes poke at their insecurities that they start to criticize his actions..

No one is saying what Evan did was right, but this song really lays out how selfish everyone's reasons for being upset with him are, just because he actually screwed up doesn't mean he isn't surrounded my self absorbed and negligent people, and the fact that he is surrounded by such a toxic support network does a lot to explain WHY he was so desperate for connection that he would do such a thing

Uh, these people did not use Evan. His mother has classes and work and could not be at home; she feels betrayed when she finds out that Evan spends his time with the Murphies, lies about it, then complains about her not being home, disrespecting her efforts. Jared conspired with Evan to fabricate Evan's emails with "Connor", while his involvement in the plot is morally questionable, it is undeniable that it is Jared being used by Evan, not the other way around. Alana exploited the whole Connor scenario for attention, choosing to ignore the blatant truth that the entire thing is false to continue the Connor Project; superficially, her heart seems to be in the right place. Evan was not used by any of these people. He remorselessly lied about Connor after his suicide in order to get with his sister, and ignored anyone he couldn't use. Everything said to him in this song is deserved.

@@axeheadshot7793 It's likely that was just an excuse. Jared is implied to be just as friendless as Evan. He wants to appear like he has more popularity than he actually does, so he pretends to be "too cool" for Evan when he's around him. Still, I'm not denying that Jared is gross. I'm just saying he wasn't using Evan to the extent Evan was using him.
