The whole NSO Expansion Pack is a hot mess: scalped controllers, subpar emulation, worse online multiplayer than NES and SNES games, and far more expensive than anyone thought it would be. It amazes me when I STILL see fanboys showing up in droves in comment sections to convince everyone what a wonderful time they're having with it, as though that should cancel out how objectively bad the whole situation is. I hope Nintendo fixes everything, they really blew it this time.

@@repeekyraidcero I guess you missed the button mapping "per game" part. Also upscaling to 1080p and wide screen hacks. If you've never played Mario 64 in widescreen at 1080 you really should. Integrity of the graphics. I mean there is a laundry list of things that can improve the gaming experience using emulators. The freedom to improve things beyond what Nintendo is willing to do for their fans. I am just guessing here but your comment leads me to believe you are a Nintendo fan, so am I. In fact I have a collection of Nintendo games and consoles going back to NES. I choose to emulate for convenience and for performance boosts and quality of life changes that Nintendo just doesn't seem to want to give to their fans. My only "complaint" is that Nintendo of all the deep pocketed game companies releases sub par emulated games. You think I want to be playing Splatoon 2 and then have to use my phone or pc to jump onto some conkers bad fur day? I'd much rather stay on the same console, but when the experience is better elsewhere that's where I'm gonna be.

It’s only a 30$ “hike”. It’s 30$ more for this than just the NSO. Which is actually reasonable. I mean, once we get the rest of the games it’ll definitely be more worth it. The problem isn't Genesis games itself. The problem is, Nintendo didn't convey that there are more games coming to Genesis. Because the code behind the Genesis games are readily available to SEGA via aforementioned Genesis Classics Collection, but what people seem to forget is most of the games are available via Genesis Mini, which is what I think the NSO collection of Genesis games are derived from ...since M2 already coded and readily available. It the BEST emulation available for Genesis.

Getting the ALL the consoles shouldn't be part of the online package. Should be able to mix and match tiers. Like if I dont play online but wanna play old games, have a tier just for that. Something like: Online Pack $10/y Old Consoles Pack $15/y (with actual serious amount of games and consoles.. not in its current state) DLC Pack $15/y So it could cost you between 10 and 45 bucks a year depending what pack you add to your online.

Original owner of Sin & Punishment from back in the day here. The reason Nintendo does that with the controls is because the D-Pad and C-Buttons are mirrored on the original N64 controller. That’s right: This is one of those rare games that supports your right hand on the control stick. In short: You can choose to aim with either left or right hand on the analog stick. Your other hand goes on either the right or left handle for movement and jumping.

After playing yoshis story and star fox 64, the two c buttons mapped to Y and X make sense. Y allows you to better throw eggs, and Y and X speed or slow down the arwing easier than using the right stick.

That's great for those games but why not just do custom settings for each game? Sin and punishment got a unique layout to match its control style. Why not do the same for mario and zelda? It's just so weird that they don't offer proper button mapping within that app.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but the Retro-bit Tribute 64 wireless works. This controller shows up as a pro controller so after that go into the button mapping on the Switch and change b to x and x to b. After that you have to switch the controller to All Star mode for the c buttons to work. Load into the N64 online and have at it. The joystick is better built and tuned to mimic the N64 range. It’s not to sensitive that you can’t walk Mario and you can aim in GoldenEye. It’s a hair more sensitive than the actual N64 controller but works pretty well.

Players: man, it sure would be neat to be able to have full button mapping controls for everything playable on the Switch. Nintendo: You get three configurations. Players: Wait, what? UK viewer here. My N64 controller arrived yesterday. The c-buttons work like the right stick. You can't configure the buttons. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe feels great with it. You can make Smash Bros work, if you really need to (blocking with the little ZR button is a bit weird). Mario Odyssey feels really nice, but you can't use Cappy.

6:52 The USB Wireless version of the Brawler64 changes the button mappings so Start inputs + while Top C and Right C input Right Stick Click and Left Stick Click respectively. I don't know if the Stick Clicks in N64 for Switch Online input the remaining C-buttons. P.S.: If Mega Man 64 gets added, Right Stick Click for opening the island or dungeon maps would be very convenient, and Clicking the Left Stick inward for lock-on zoom would be neat. Mega Man 64 utilized the 6-button layout of the N64 pad most effectively, so I'd be surprised if Nintendo didn't forget to map the rest of the C buttons to the stick clicks.

Here's the solution: buy a raphnet N64 to GCN adapter and buy 8bitdo's Gbros GCN wireless adapter and an authentic OEM (or Brawler 64) controller. The raphnet adapter has several control mappings you can set that was mainly for N64 VC but work excellently with the N64 games on NSO. For instance, in default mode, I couldn't play Sin & Punishment because Nintendo made both the left and right stick do the same thing and put the C-Left and C-Right buttons on X and Y. If I hold down "R" on my N64 controller as I plug it in to the raphnet adapter, the mapping changes so I can play S&P like I would on a real N64. I don't know what Nintendo was thinking, but that's the solution for your controller woes.

The longer I've played it, the more I understand the button layout. Tutorials tell you to push the left c button and if A/B were configured how it is on the N64 controller, you'd have to press the top most button on the controller. Which is just more difficult to subconsciously adjust to than C down being tied to the top button. None of that is to say there shouldn't be the option to customize the layout for a control set up as convoluted as the N64, just that it's starting to make sense why it's layout the way it is and I am getting used to it

I use the Rerro-Bit Tribute 64 2.4 GHz Wireless controller and it works great! Just use the macros to set it to All-Star mode, which also sets the C buttons as the right analog. You do have to remap the B button because the B button on the controller by default is mapped to X. So just reverse the mapping of the B and X button and you'll have the buttons laid out perfectly. The downside is.....you have to turn off rumble in the setting of the N64 app. Otherwise when you start a game, it vibrates nonstop.

Honestly the controller situation is kinda goofy with emulators too. Like, you have full capability to remap everything (unless you're using an emulator that has weird limitations on how you can map buttons but I don't think that's common anymore) but if the original controller's layout doesn't really conform to modern controller layouts then you either end up wanting different button mappings for certain games (and then promptly forgetting those variant layouts) or you wanna have special controllers for those systems which immediately goes to pot once you start swapping controllers around. But like that's a thing that could be fixed in a retroarch update one day.
