Considering how much we beat up our N64 controllers in Smash and Mario Party yet they're still working literally 20 years later, I don't think it's the user.

Heyo, I got your case study right here: I get controller drift like crazy, however I actually treat every single controller with tender care. I even did an experiment one time with a PS4 controller where I would only ever use it wearing gloves, and would put it back in the box immediately after using it. After a few months of semi-regular usage sessions, it still succumbed to drift. What confuses me is that I've seen people downright abuse their controllers and they'll insist they've never gotten drift. Yet I'm here keeping them sterile like hospital equipment and they still die on me after a few months. At this point, I just put a warranty on every single controller I buy. It saves me money in the long run.

Hey Bob, really appreciate your testing a lot. You've done a great job!! Just want to say something here so viewers know more.:) You can set the analog trigger for two levels of its response, one level of travel sensing for games like racing and another level of quick action with little pressing. Also its vibration has different levels for setting to fit your preference. If you check its circularity, it has only 0.6% average error compared to 7% or even 10% around of all other controllers. If a version of this with physical trigger stops was made, it looks like it would be literally perfect, the absolute holy grail of controllers. Failing that, a version that just had digital triggers would be just as perfect, but for the Switch and non-racing PC games specifically.

@@bland9876 Gimped as in you're not getting extra buttons? That depends. Some software (on PC) can recognize the Elite's paddles as separate buttons. You can assign them to different key bindings. The problem is that not all games support multi-device inputs, especially if they come from controller and keyboard. One solution is to map every controller input to a keyboard/mouse input at that point. But no real situation at that point is "optimal." As long as the controller has the paddles, it will be a great addition. If they add in software like 8bitdo does with the Pro 2, or allow it to be recognized as an Elite controller instead of mapping to be solely done on device/hardware.

And even if your game doesn't like mixed inputs you can still sometimes find a few mixed inputs that work for example in fortnite there's a dedicated button to allow you to Sprint without you having to push forward on the controller and you can map that button to somewhere on the controller. Pretty handy when you have the regular sprint button mapped somewhere else that you don't really want to be double tapping.

For those wondering why older controllers never had this issue, it's because tensions were much greater back in the day which helped keep the stick in the centre. Additionally, consoles like the Gamecube would automatically calibrate the sticks to the new 0, 0 x y at every boot so most people never noticed. Stick drift has always been a thing with potentiometers. It's just that manufacturers were better at hiding it before. Additionally, almost all controllers these days use ALPS pots with the exception of the Switch that uses a modified ALPS with a different pad leading to slightly worse lifetime. These pots are rated for a certain number of rotations. If you only play CoD, this number of rotations comes out to be 100 hours on average before failure and *every* controller with pots will succumb to drift around that time frame.

I've done some testing myself. I got my switch and within six months I had drift. I keep my electronics super clean and when the joy on began to drift it looked brand new. Then my cousin, who plays most games with me online, also had drift around the same time that I experienced mine. Then I got new joycons as did he and we play a lot of games in which you have to press down the left stick to run. So going forward we mapped the run button to a trigger or face button. NO MORE DRIFT! I think the combination of pressing down on the stick and a direction causes the joycons to wear much faster than normal. So I think the reason some people never get drift is the face they only play certain games, EG Wulff here. I've also done a survey of those who have had drift and I ask what types of games they play most and those that have drift usually play third person or FPS. Does anyone fit into this methodology?

The only reason I'd be interested in this is if d-pad was any good. The d-pad on the Pro controller really sucks. And you didn't talk about a d-pad at all. Does the d-pad use mechanical switches?

Wow, I was so patiently waiting for this video man. I'd love to ask you a question: I've bought three of them, which I've all had to return because the ABXY buttons were getting stuck (or well, one of the buttons at least). Always one button ruining the whole package which is fantastic. Are the face buttons great and not sticky for you? Thanks! 🙏 PS: re-watched the video and heard you said the buttons are "very good". I'm honestly shocked as all 3 ones I had were getting stuck not even after 2 days of use, so no way it was just a random defect. Pretty confusing and sad.

It probably is because it's xbox style buttons. I have an xbox controller SX and they have the same issue, you have to press them straight not at an angle which is annoying
@oscar_dl2 жыл бұрын
@@hereticsshallbecleansed7245 That's really weird, because my Xbox one is flawless in that regard. And it's not even about it being sticky or not, there's a big difference: Xbox controller buttons are much more tactile. I have no idea what Bob is prasing with the buttons, they're the biggest (and only) problem with this GuliKit model. They're not tactile enough (at all imo), and the supposedly mechanical switches don't provide anything valuable here.

My Nintendo Pro-Controllers last about 1 year before they inherit major drift issues with the left joy stick. 3 of my Switch Pro-Controllers & one of my joy-cons all have drift issues. It's just a matter of time & I put a lot of time gaming in each year. I'd say about 2,500 +or- hours a year and you will receive left joy stick drift issues.

While it would be nice to see them commit to fully mechanical buttons, I suppose a benefit of their approach is that you don't get as much wobble with the buttons as you would on, say, an Xbox controller. You then don't have to worry about the contact pads on the PCB being poorly designed like they are on, say, an Xbox controller, since the button will always press pretty much straight down. So it's kind of best of both worlds, the durability of membrane contacts but the feel and reliability of a mechanical switch.

For switch I've tested the Pro controller, PDP, Power A enhanced wireless, Power A Fusion Pro, Power A Nano wireless, 8bitDo pro 2, and none of them have felt perfect for me. I ended up keeping the Power A enhanced wireless and adding thumb grip caps to the sticks to make it more comfortable. I liked the 8bitDo sticks more but didn't like it's triggers or the distance between the trigger and shoulder button. I loved my Xbox 360 controllers and the Stadia controller ended up being really comfortable for me. Should I try this one out as a comparison to all those other controllers? Bob, have you tested this controller for long play sessions yet? How much does the trigger travel compared to the 8bitDo pro 2?
@persechini2 жыл бұрын
I ended up getting this controller and am quite pleased. Doesn't feel as solid as the xbox controller, I had a few minor issues, but overall, pretty great - My left stick seemed to have some resistance white contacting the ring at the 1 o clock position, but poking it seemed to click it into position and the issue went away - I switched playing on pc and switch, and at some point I must've clicked the calibration buttons because I wasn't able to fully turn and mario kart anymore. The issue went away later after hitting the calibration again - I wish the plastic shell was more of an xbox clone (yes, even more) so we could use some of the same mods/accessories - After the the xbox series controller, it's jarring to use any other dpad - Metallic shoulder buttons and triggers would be better all black - The "clicky" buttons don't stand out particularly for me, to close to a regular controller button to consider it a buying point - The only larger issue is that the stick seem to be pretty heavily biased towards the the x and y axis, making nuanced diagonals harder. I don't know if this is the result of yet another option I activated unintentionally All these are all negative points are pretty minor or just aesthetic or were fixed with little effort and the controller is an excellent option if you like to keep using the same one in many systems or as a second controller that no one would would complain about using. The texture of the shell feels great and while I wouldn't recommend it over the 8bitdo Pro 2 for everyone, if you like the multi-system connection and prefer the xbox layout, I's say go for it.
@raffikkiz Жыл бұрын
The x,y bias will almost always be a thing. It's due to the use of springs. The springs are what bring the sticks back to 0,0. Some controllers have softer springs.
@persechini Жыл бұрын
@@raffikkiz I understand, but when I say heavily biased, it is in comparison to other controllers were any bias is soft enough to not be noticeable. And this was during play, not a calibration or input viewing app where it would be even more noticeable

I've heard that the drift can actually happen from not using your controller frequently enough, dust build up essentially. I had a joycon that I owned for several years but maybe only put a couple hundred hours of use into and it started drifting so bad I had to replace it entirely.

You asked what we're doing differently to our controllers that they drift so quickly. Let me answer your question with another question. Don't you own 50 billion or so controllers that your constantly using, swapping, buying and reviewing? I own ONE pair of joy cons for a couple of years, and had to replace the joysticks twice (the pink one is due for a new one rn but it strait up broke. I think someone dropped it and didn't tell me). The problem slowed down when 2 things happened. 1, got the switch light, and 2, I started spraying compressed air in the joysticks (they're due for that too.) So what are we doing differently? Using them more.

Just wanna clarify: buttons aren't mechanical. They're what we call membrane with slider, which is some weird combination of both mechanical and membrane. Aside from that, great video! The controller looks dope as hell too, I would have definitely picked one up but I just bought the Forza special edition series X controller cause it looked dope and unfortunately I'm a big rumble fan. This would have made an amazing all around switch and PC controller though, too bad HD rumble is still only a Nintendo thing so far, and even Xbox controllers seem to have better rumble than this one. Maybe one day they'll make one with at least better vibration.
@wolfiemuse2 жыл бұрын
When he says mechanical buttons, he’s referring to the keyboard style buttons. Those are called mechanical switches as the common name.
@bb_lou2 жыл бұрын
@@wolfiemuse I know, these are not mechanical switches, as I said, they're membrane with slider, as there is (surprise surprise) a membrane and a slider in a housing, but no mechanical connection is made anywhere in the key. It's just a slider pushing down on a membrane which shorts the pads on the board. They're also used in keyboards and have existed in that space since the 80's or even before. Chyrosran22 has a lot of dope videos on weird switch types, including membrane with slider if you ever wanna go down the rabbit hole.

It's great that a company is willing to put hall effect sensors in their controller. Since, over time they'd probably sell less controllers because they aren't breaking on people. If they had a version or mod kit that put at least two back buttons like the 8bitdo Pro 2. And a hair trigger mod, hell it doesn't even have to be as good as that mouse click like new Scuf. As long as it lasted a year they'd have a serious contender on their hands. Even if it was as expensive as the Xbox elite, or Razer controllers knowing ur sticks are gonna last out of the box is crazy huge value. I just got the 8bitdo Pro2 and love it. I'd get the pro version of this controller for sure though. But, I'm glad it exists and hope that people enjoy it and the company sticks around making better controllers. Hopefully, it gets more companies to use the technology they are putting forward.

Unfortunately these pads have QA issues, this is the first pad I have where the action buttons stick right out of the box. I could understand after years of use, pads do wear down over time, but this is a brand new pad, and the X button sticks coming up. From what I have read this is a common issue, so beware when buying, you may get one that is faulty.

I bought the NS08 non pro version. It's way cheaper, has the same hall effect sticks and triggers and the best it's not soft touch material. So it doesn't get as greasy as the pro version. I also purchased their XBOX layout buttons since I primarily use Gulikit on the PC. I'm also planning to buy their thumbstick set. Great accessory to have just in case the thumb stick caps rubber get corroded by sweat. It has happened to me twice and it's not a nice experience. I'm impressed by Gulikit by essentially making the controller repairable because they provide parts for the controller that may get damaged over the duration of use.

Another good thing about this controller is that you can interchange/swap out the switch button layout for the PC/Xbox button layout with a combination of button presses which is a neat feature. I wish some controller manufactures can take some Ideas from the company GameSir with their G4 Pro controller they have magnetic A,X,B,Y face buttons that you can change the layout physically for Switch/Other Nintendo based consoles such as the Wii-U or leave it as the default PC/Xbox layout which is a neat feature. Just like you can swap out the ThumbSticks and DPad on the Xbox-one Elite Controller due to them being magnetic.

if they made one of these for Xbox/PC, but add 'adjustable' triggers and some paddle buttons, it could be a great alternative to the Elite v2 controller. But they would need to extend the 'grippy' part of the controller around to the front/top like you sort of mentioned you wished they did on this controller. Also improve the rumble functionality. Not that I personally care for rumble anyway, but for those that do.
@adriankoch964 Жыл бұрын
It already works on PC and has a switch to be detected either as Xinput and DirectInput device (depending on how old the game is you want to control) as well as Android and IOs. Paddles would be great and much more useful than builtin macros. True cross-plattform control would also be nice. I'm so sick of Xbox and PS5 having their own little islands despite pretty much every game wanting to use the same buttons and inputs that exists on either controllers. Especially when you want to play some 4 player party game, but don't have 4 controllers of the same plattform (but a rainbow mix of kind of the same-ish where it matters layout controllers but of different generations and plattforms). At least xbox series and ps5 controllers can now just work on PC without absolutely requreing third party adapters or software that keeps on breaking. Hope the EU will eventually force the console makers to get their shit together and implement cross plattform usage. Screw those gimmicky hardware features that only the 1st party titles ever use. What I wonder about the life time of the KKP2 are the triggers. Those arent HALL effect sensors, but potentiometers, right? I've had to retire 2 PS4 controllers from trigger issues and while you can swap that bit out, it's a pain to disassemble and the replacement foils don't nearly last as long.

This controller has been out for a few months; I bought it on Amazon on May, 2021. Unless this is a new revision, I'm not a fan. It looks fairly decent, and first impressions are good. Unfortunately, the D-pad on mine was really unresponsive, requiring too much pressure to use. The shoulder buttons (not the triggers, but the standard L/R) also broke about 2 weeks after I got it. I really wanted it to be a good controller as it does look and feel good in the hand, but it ends up as just another sub-par Pro replacement. Unfortunately, one that's not cheap.
