I'd like to request something: a discussion on "showmances" and how they work. Like does everyone in the cast know about what's going on? My friend is beginning one and as an outsider I'm curious how it works in a big theatre production like Les Mis or even Addams Family tour.

I'm an American who now lives in the UK and I totally didn't think about dessert forks being weird until I got here! It's not every dessert but like, a fork for cake or something like that never seemed weird to me. Here it seems to always be spoons and that's totally fine but it's just one of those weird things that no one seems to mention about the transatlantic move!

Bath Spa University do what they call a “drama school course within a university setting”.. when I studied there I was in Monday - Friday, 9-5, doing 90% practical and 10% theory.. I thoroughly recommend if anyone wishes to study performing arts but within a University environment! Also, the town is SO lovely!

@Charlotte McCormack I'm the girl that asked the question about Uni vs Drama school, I currently study Drama and psychology at Bath Spa Uni as I'm hoping to go into drama therapy. I just find the topic so interesting as there are a lot of actors who go to Uni but do a postgrad at a Drama school. I guess if you want to solely be an actor or be in the West end then Drama school is the way to go but it depends on the course and direction you want to go in. I love the whole Uni experience and opted for that.

Carrie's always been a star. And Oliver too. P.S. My family is American, and we use spoons a lot more than forks. There are few things more frustrating than not being able to scoop up that last bit of ice cream because the fork doesn't fit properly with the bowl, and spoons are generally more useful. Therefore, Oliver's right that you shouldn't eat ice cream with a fork, and Carrie's right that Americans don't use forks more than spoons (as far as I know). But you should really use a knife to eat your ice cream. :)
@xzonia14 жыл бұрын
I don't know how many times I've seen people here in the US eat ice cream cake with a fork instead of a spoon, but enough that I tend to think we like forks more (though, like you, I prefer spoons). Maybe generalizing about Americans is more difficult because every state has its own personality. Texan here. :) Lol about the knife! I've seen people do that for a laugh! X)

When things are very teenager-y and real but not big if that makes sense, I often use the word ‘fizzy,’ like for soda. I find it works, so maybe you’ll find it useful as well? “Oh my god, the tigers are coming...” was beautiful btw xD

As an American and a lover of desserts, I can say in my family we use the appropriate utensils for whatever our dessert experiences! If the dessert is served in a bowl, we use a spoon for things like ice cream, custards, berries, sorbets, etc. If it is served on a plate, we use a fork for things like cake, pie, tortes, brownies, etc. And because my mom likes foo-foo things, we also use ice cream forks (fancy, sterling silver sporks) for when you have a fork item and spoon item... e.g. cake and ice cream, brownie a la mode, bread pudding with extra creme anglaise, etc.! 🍧🍰🍮

I go to Falmouth university and we have Academy of Music and Theatre Arts. I’m on theatre and performance, but we also have acting, musical theatre and technical theatre arts. Also have dance and choreography as well as 3 music courses. I love Falmouth and we have tonnes of contact hours and with a decent amount of theory. The other great thing is that every course at Falmouth is creative so you can feature in film and productions for the tv and film students or model for photography or fine art students. Like the collaboration aspect Falmouth is such an experience and opens you up to wider avenues.

Just some advice I have had when it comes to Uni and Drama School. If you want to be generally involved in theatre but don’t know exactly what you want to do then go to Uni. The courses are more general so you get to try more things out and have a look into more roles. If you want something specific like an actor/dancer/performer then go to drama school. Saying that - I go to drama school but study Applied Theatre and Community Drama, as I want to be a director/facilitator. And the course I’m on is specifically for that. So yeah all depends if you are like 100% for one specific job or you still want to explore. Also some unis have great extracurricular drama but don’t have a drama course - so definitely look into that as well. :)

I did a thatre degree and personally i preferred doing that. I have cerebral palsy so the idea of going flat out all year might have been physically too challenging to do drama school. That being said at least 2 semesters of the year we were in say 16 hours contact time and then an additional 10 hours rehearsal plus hours spent on essays etc. AND then i worked a part time job as well. I preferred it just so i could meet a variety of people not just strictly theatre, and because I didn't think i JUST wanted to perform it worked out better for me. The way we were taught also relied on us wanting to be self employed freelancers rather than getting agents so we had to be multifascited not just in acting skills. I have since written a stage play that sadly had to be scrapped due to fiances but I had a sit down with myself and really thought about where my talents lied. I found that writing was really my strength and am currently editing my first children's novel! In the future I think I'll be grateful i did this as it puts less stress on my body and allows me to live my best housecat life here in the South West. :) x

It's because Bradford has a bad rep and you're right its a very small town centre, but the Alambra looks amazing. It's where I came to see the show! If you ever come back, and you have the time too, Bradfords pretty near a lot of nice little towns less than half an hour train journey away. Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge (I'm biased with that one because I live there haha), Halifax (mainly the Piece Hall) among others which I think are worth exploring.

Drama school will rigorously train you to be a performer and that's what those courses are for. They will mould you into their ideal of what a performer should be. For example most Acting courses will teach Stanislvaski which is just one approach to acting. University drama/ theatre courses are academic and are aimed at getting you to critically think about theatre but that doesn't always mean you're just reading books all day! The theatre course I did (which has now been sadly discontinued) had a mixture of practical and theoretical modules with a lot of choice so you could pursue acting or do practise-based research. And we studied a lot of contemporary theatre and. the politics, philosophy, etc, so it wasn't just reading and analysing Shakespeare. Different courses have wildly different approaches so it really depends on what you like. My impression of drama school courses over university degrees is that you don't get the freedom to explore and add more string to your bow and I personally am more of a free spirit and so loved being able to study what interested me at uni. Basically don't count Uni out because if you do decide you definitely want to be a performer you can go on to do a Master's at a drama school and still have the same kind of experience of training.

I made the choice to go to uni to do performance as I wanted to act. I have to say it was the wrong choice. Drama school would have been better. Drama schools often have the connections to agents, etc so when you leave you're better set up. Uni doesn't. You finish and then have to work out your next step. Ultimately I failed and don't have a job connected to acting at all.
@zombiesandteaparties4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I went you uni with a few people who just wanted to perform but surely that doesn't mean you won't have gained any other valuable skills, particularly critical thinking. I've also believe that having the life experience is really useful before going to drama school because you've had time to mature and they really like that in candidates. So don't be so hard on yourself and say you've failed because it's not such a straight trajectory to becoming a performer and I bet you've got loads to offer!
@jennyupabove4 жыл бұрын
@@zombiesandteaparties Thank you, that's really kind of you to say I'm sure I gained so much from the uni experience. With the course though there was no "here's what you need to do to try and achieve X", "this is how the audition process works", "here's how to prepare for a role" and I feel that's why it's not as good as drama school. But I did love uni and the friends I made there are my friends for life. It was great as an experience. Thank you for reminding me of that.

Haha, I loved when Joey lied about his dancing abilities and did all those crazy steps! So funny!! I've always wondered what would happen if someone actually did that in a real cast, though? (Probably not as funny then!) :) Well, if Americans are eating pie or cake a la mode, we'll often eat the ice cream and pastry with a fork. In my experience, Americans in general prefer forks over spoons (I prefer spoons, but I'm not normal). So I'd say Ollie's right in general ... but if someone's just eating ice cream by itself, we go with spoons unless they're all dirty, and then it's fork time. ;) Lol

I'm really curious how many years you study in drama school? Maybe it's different if you actually live in like New York City, but in the U.S. from what I know from my friends who have studied theatre in college (university) with the goal of doing of live theatre, not like TV and movies, is that the first couple years of your degree you do have to do a mix of courses but the last year or two are almost entirely theatre courses and you're required to be in x amount of plays and musicals and projects at the university. And as far as I know, unless you want to do film acting and move to LA, really the only way to get formal training is at a university. Unless you find like a local acting class or hire a voice coach. But there aren't really any theatre programs outside of universities. Again, I imagine they might exist in NYC, but I'm not from NYC and the people I know got their degrees and then moved to NYC.
@zombiesandteaparties4 жыл бұрын
Drama courses are 3 years. You will just study one discipline, such as Acting or Dance or Musical theatre, there isn't any overlap. If you do an Acting course, for example, there will probably be a module on acting for the screen, otherwise you're just training to act for the stage and in your final year you're just rehearsing for performances. UK universities that offer Drama courses are more similar, however because you can choose modules that are broad in the first year but later on lean more towards acting or directing, etc, or for some degrees you can Major/Minor but those tend to be something with a language. Drama schools offer 9-5 training that intends to mould you into a performer whereas uni degrees are, like I said, more broad and are about critical thinking and so tend to be more academic. That's not to say university degrees aren't more practical and can't offer good performance training, it's just the objectives of drama school v uni are different. And a quick hit take from me here: In the UK there tend to be more prestige attached to drama schools but to me that's just snobbery and University is just as good if you want to become more well-rounded and be free to explore your practise. Hope that answered your question
