When I had my vinyl 2-rail fence installed about 5 years ago I remember the installer saying, "Wood is good, but vinyl is final!" Mine has held up well, when I can keep from hitting the posts with the snowplow. Vinyl gets more brittle in cold weather. This summer it needs pressure washing to remove green growth on the underside of the rails, but I consider it acceptable for that amount of time.

I’m retired from a large aerospace company. Most of my 37 yr career was working with subcontractors making components to our prints and specs. Dealt with every conceivable size company. By FAR I always felt the small business contractors provided great service and product. We weren’t the easiest to work with but the small businesses went above and beyond expectations.

I liked your commentary on burning wood. I see you often carrying firewood and I need to share me setup to save work! My stove is just 4 feet from a sliding patio door with a concrete patio just outside, this allows me to park an IBC tote full of wood just outside the door where I can just reach out to load my wood box daily, no carrying! If you have a stove in your shop or garage just provide access to park the tote right next to the stove! Work smarter not harder, thanks for all your shows, Don

Jess is the heart of the vinyl operation for sure. I like a chain link fence. The wind will go through it and you can put plantings around it to hide it. The sun will get to the plants, unlike the vinyl.

My neighbor just finished installing the same vinyl fence for the third time. The last time we had a major wind storm a tree dropped a limb on the fence and destroyed it. My neighbor went out on his deck, stamped his foot and cried, "AGAIN?". Great video Mike thumbs up.

I drove by a house this last weekend that had a vinyl fence surrounding the property that gave me a very different perspective on this approach. The fence was made like a traditional rail fence with posts that had 3 horizontal between, there were multiple sections of the fencing that must have had tree branches fall on as they were broken. People get this for the "maintenance free" aspect but all plastics will embrittle over time due to uv/thermal/oxidation aging and what happens when this stuff inevitably breaks from a tree fall, someone backing into it with a vehicle or the kids climbing on it? You can not simply get another piece of wood and repair it, in an afternoon like you would do with wood, you have to hope that the manufacturer is still in business and that you can find some new sections to replace the bad, probably taking a long time to source and costing a fair amount. Also, this stuff chalks and goes yellow over time... Seems that an unpainted wood fence has a lot of advantages...

The good side of the fence is very true. In Florida we had neighbors close by where this one particular neighbor lived and when he put up a privacy fence out of wood he gave himself the good side and the property he put it to i told him he was wrong. That started a war with the neighbor next to me because the owner before him put the fence in correctly and he thought I put it up backwards. I told him that this fence was put up way before me and he had the post side. So i had to explain this to all the neighbors in this area. I said if you don't believe me look it up in the codes. So they did and they were good with that.
