Pigpen is a legend. He just had something the other members didn't have. What's so cool about him is that he never fought for the extra attention, but when it was his turn to shine, he SHINED. In any other band he probably would have been the lead. Most of his songs are absolute bangers, rarely a single one I dislike. All quality over quantity. Easy Wind, Operator, Mr Charlie, The Stranger, Hard to Handle and of course Turn on Your Lovelight!!

I thought the original vinyl of Bears Choice released summer 1973 was as close to a perfect Grateful Dead album as it would ever be during the life of the band. I was very fortunate to have seen the Dead over 20 times with Pigpen. One of those times , Stony Brook College I met Pigpen after a very long night of a peak performance from the Dead. It was just a “thank you Pigpen” to where he asked me “did you have a good time?” My reply “ an incredible time”( or something like that) and he then said “That’s good”. I remember where I was 50 years ago today, driving when the DJ on the underground radio station (WNEW?) announced his passing. I have my old Pigpen T-shirt 2nd printing 1990s from G.D. (murch) sic. Easy Wind, one of the great Hunter/ McKernan collaborations and vital electric blues jams in the “History of the Grateful Dead”. Without Pigpen there would have never been the Grateful Dead.

Talking about Pigpen reminds me when i was 14 and they played at Princeton University in New Jersey. Well at 14 i was about the size of a midget. But me and and my buddy we're so excited cause we lived in the next suberb down in Lawrenceville. So we hitch hiked into Princeton, 4 miles away, got to the auditorium as the Rodies we're setten up the bands equipment. Back then security was lax so they we're cool with 2 14 year old kids cruisen around in awe at the set up. Even got to see the band do some practice songs before the show and met them all cause my friend and me were the only people their at 4 in the afternoon pre show at 8. 😃😃😃 A memory i will never forget. I was so small that when the show started and the auditorium filled up. Me and my friend sitting on the stage. But when ya gotta pee ya gotta pee. To my advantage cause i could literally walk fast under big people's legs to go to the head, come back to my spot with no one getting upset with me. 🌴😃🤙🤙🤙🤙😃🌴

It was all i could do to hold on tight and not let go .. walstib...

Rich & Jessie - I have read about 10 books on the GD, avid amateur GD history buff, listened to all the GOGDcasts at least 2 x, and this installment beats everything out there from the amateur days of the band by far. The Palo Alto days are covered mostly from a Merry Pranksters angle, but this McKernan angle is the deepest so far when you think about the where roots music became rock. Illuminated by your work here on the 1st star/showman of the band, the picture is much richer. Thanks!

Great surprise to hear a shout-out to the late Billy Miller and Miriam Linna at about 41:00. The two of them have overseen some spectacular reissues -- and were behind the Kicks fanzine, one of the more irreverent rock publications. These two, and their Kicks scribes, turned me onto tons of forgotten music like Ronnie Self, Sparkle Moore, Ron Haydock, the Bobby Fuller Four, and scads more.

If anyone knows how to contact Jim Sullivan... I'd forever be indebted....I had a dear friend, Jeff Perry, who passed a few years ago, that was also friends with Pigs little brother...and if he has any Jeff stories, I'd love to hear them. I'm so happy to learn, as would Jeff, that Sully is the keeper of the Pigpen archive. What a great episode. My journey with The Dead is extrinsically linked with Jeff, so to learn anything new would mean the world to me. Interesting to hear Courtney Loves father, Hank Harrison, mentioned. I didn't realize he had conducted any interviews with the members.
