When it comes to race, there’s a fine line between real life identification and onscreen representation.
Note: The director of The New Mutants is JOSH Boone, not John. Sorry, all white names sound the same to me.

Another one of my "favorite" miscasting's is Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone in a biopic. It was obviously wrong and Zoe's reaction to the backlash... yeah to me really exposed the cultural rift of black americans and black latinos.

I think it more so exposed the entitlement and colorism(and anti- Blackness) of Zoe. For YEARS she denied being Black/ Afro latina, but then takes a role playing Nina, a woman whose dark skin and unambiguous African features were a source of pride and identity. And for zoe to put on a prosthetic nose and dawn blackface and a wig to play her, even after Nina's own family objected to the film, really shows how ignorant and self- centered Zoe is. Magically she became "a proud afro Latina" after crying mixed race for so long😒 Unambiguous afro Latinos also face the colorism brunt from lighter ppl in their communities as well, that's why I don't think that this is necessarily a cultural disparity between afro latino and African American. This is lighter skin (and ambiguous looking) ppl once again playing dumb in the face of their disrespect towards their darker skin counterparts

I’ve always thought I was “white passing” til I made a couple KZbin videos and I got all these comments about how ugly my Jewish nose is and how nobody cares about what I have to say or about my pussy because of my “Jewish look” and I feel like “being Jewish” is like really only a step down from being “actually white” so it pains me to know how much people who look even less like them have to deal with.

I really appreciate the points in this video ! My dad’s dad is a Black Brazilian and whenever my dad speaks on his experiences visiting Brazil, he would get a load of micro aggressions from even walking through the wealthier parts of the cities. It’s interesting to hear in comparison to the colorist bs I’ve experienced in the US 😬 also the casual ways that racism gets reinforced is wild, watching so much colorist miscasting that still happens is so insulting and frustrating.

As a fan of the X-Men comics, Sunspot also faces whitewashing within the comics themselves, as certain artists have drawn him with lighter skin and a hair texture that's more wavy rather than curly. It's unfortunate that the original New Mutants comics from the early 1980s did a better job of depicting Sunspot as a Black Brazillian character than comics created several decades later in the 2000s or even the early 2010s.

I did a paper on this in my English course. It’s a serious issue and the sole reason for all the misrepresentation is the lack of diversity in the production, writing, directing and casting departments. However the new standards set in place for the academy awards could bring some major changes. I guess we’ll see.

I know I'm a year late on this video but yes to all of this! Trying to explain this to others, at least in the black community is so frustrating. It's always "Oh don't just focus on skin tone be happy the person is black" and it's like no. We need to see and celebrate people of all skin colors in all ethnicites. We have to stop accepting crumbs. And folks of a lighter skin tone refuse to recognize their privilege because they don't mind being lifted up while everyone else gets left behind. White supremacy really messed up so many people it's horrible.

YES. why should we just accept the bare minimum when white ppl are represented in 15 million ways on tv? U got blondes, brunettes, redheads, polish ppl, Jewish ppl, italians. But no, POC should just be happy they're letting us into their spaces, as if we don't belong on TV.

Very interesting how you separated your being Chinese from being “culturally white” and identify as Asian. A really nuanced position. Marvel casted America Chavez, a dark-skinned black Puerto Rican lesbian woman, as a light-skinned Mexican 15 year old girl. Many believe they casted her that young to avoid talking about her sexuality. Overall bad choice, and a perfect example of this.

When riverdale s2 was released I genuinely thought they replaced Ross butler, who clearly looks Asian, with a white man. I was so upset. Then I found out Charles is also Asian, which made it even worse for me. Charles Melton looks as white as fully white men. Could the producers not find an Asian American actor who looks obviously Asian? He’s a fine actor, I’m mad at the producers

@@kyleighwhite1409 you're misunderstanding very clearly the person meant that he's so white passing you can forget his asian heritage and it counts as whitewashing of the character due to him looking ambiguous enough that you don't know he's Asian. It's basically the same beauty standards of white supremacy being upheld instead of realizing there are other types of beauty standards.

Essentially, Butler was offered two options: he could stay in both series but his characters would be featured less frequently, or he could choose a more significant role in 13 Reasons Why. He chose to leave Riverdale and pursue 13 Reasons Why. Confident in his decision, he told Vulture he connected with Zach more than Reggie. "Reggie’s a great character, but it’s a different tone. I connected with Zach on a much more real level where I didn’t have to create so much of a character for him. Reggie’s more outspoken, like that jock archetype.

Ah, Johnny Depp as Tonto... you know, even if I grant the guy that he’s 1/1000th Native American does that really give him license to portray what’s kind of a highly offensive caricature? I’d be curious when it is acceptable to take a role because, as an actor, you need to in order to further your job. In contrast, at what stage of an actors career should they decline a role because it is reductive or not the best representation. Also, who gets to decide when this trade off is, and why?
@devonmunn5728
@devonmunn5728 3 жыл бұрын
It's not entirely on the actors shoulders. The casting directors bear a huge brunt of that, yes it partially goes onto an actors shoulders if they accept the role but the casting directors should also say look for a Japanese actor for a Japanese role. Its not just about 'merit' it's also about who gets opportunities. Yes POC Actors should get roles that are race neutral but getting a race specific role isn't bad either as long as it's not a stereotype.

You should look up the original lone ranger(the person,not the show)......Bass reeves..... Yeah Colorism is extremely prevalent in the black community with how we treat and view each other. Tyler perry for one tends to make darker skinned males the bad guy while lighter skinned males play the love interest or savior. And if a light skinned male plays a bad guy often times the love interest is of a difference race (the only movies that goes against this rederict is "a family that prays" as far as I know). And we are constantly seeing black artists using black women in their vids but then are bashing black and dark skinned women(have of them saying they don't want no dark b****) Then you get alot of mixed raced people either claiming mixed (getting mad when the black community "claims"/accepts them). Then there are the mixed raced people who claim blackness when it's beneficial to them and then others themselves from the black community when things are looking less than appealing for the community You get the darker skinned black people who verbally attack light skinned black girls and vice versa Then you get alot of black people that don't accept mixed raced people into the community. There's more but.......

No, the lone ranger should have gotten a reboot with a black man like the real man it was based off of, bass reeves, a man born a slave who became known for catching crooks and also being kind and friends to the native tribes who had been forced from their land and were often victimized by colonizers. It should been run by a black and indigenous crew who want to pay tribute to and talk about the heroes of our people. But Disney is cowards.

I understand what you're trying to say at the beginning of the video but skin color and hair texture aren't a given. light skin people can have kinky hair. dark skin people can have silky hair. it would've been better if the actress cast had kinky hair? Sure. However, the actress could've been mixed-race like Zazie Beetz who regardless of her complexion or racial background, has afro-texture hair.
