Wow, felt like I had Steely Dan right in front of me. Perfection. Real MUSICIANS, playing in a Bar...and they play nothing but mindless, market oriented crap to the masses, while players like these do it for love of music and hopefully make a good living doing what you love.

Thank You So Much Mike for the comment. You are very kind and the band appreciates it! We enjoy playing this music whether we have our full band, or our scaled down version so that we can fit in some of the smaller, but mighty jazz venues that cater to better quality music. It's fun to play and the audiences appreciate the sound we bring to the mix.

Thank You So Very Much Andy! Many fond memories of this album from way back in 1977. Those were great times for music. I miss those days.

Nice job. Tough song. Keyboards?…prerecorded prob. Makes it even harder to play along. Good work on the kit!

Hi Zool! Thank You for the comment! Yeah, we do a scaled down version of this show in order to play in smaller venues. We fit what and who we can fit. We are normally a 7-piece unit, but we ourselves created all of the tracks we use for when we need them. Yes, it can be a difficult task , but we're all kind of used to being in the studio quite a bit so it makes it easier to deal with. We do have 2 really amazing keyboardists, Axel Belohoubek and Gary Mancinelli. One of them is always with us for larger shows.

Where's the keyboard player?

Hi Abdel. When we do smaller venues we use our tracks that were created by our band. We are normally a 7-piece unit. This is what we call our 5-piece joint. Took us a while to be able to do this. One day one of our keyboard players got stuck in an airport the day of a sold out show. Tickets were $35 and it was really much too late to cancel. Thank God we had those tracks. We enjoy the music whether we have our full band, or doing a smaller venue with our tracks.

Hey John! Thanks for the comment! People love Shanghai Jazz and if anything they're waiting for their meal to arrive! Lol! SJ is a Zagat rated restaurant/club. There are 2-Seatings and both shows are always sold out. I guess seating is about 85 per show. Here is a little bit about the Jazz. Zagat "Savory, upscale Asian fare is served with a side of jazz at this unique Madison gem where tastefully done performances from big-name artists put it over the top ... the welcoming service and lively crowd make for a great night out." "ONE OF THE TOP 100 JAZZ CLUBS IN THE WORLD." - Shanghai Jazz was opened in summer of 1995 by David Niu and Martha Chang. While studying in a doctorate program, Martha did extensive research on 1920’s Shanghai. During that tumultuous period globally, Shanghai was a destination for those looking to escape the depression in America, the rise of fascism in Eastern Europe, the penal colonies in Australia, among many other difficult situations around the world at that time. With myriad different cultures flooding into the city, the cuisines evolved, a dark and violent vein sprouted, and an incredible music scene developed and jazz was the genre that kept folks swinging in the clubs! With this as inspiration, Shanghai Jazz was born. David and Martha drove this unique concept for 22 years and counting, as one of the “Top 100 Jazz Clubs in the World” (Downbeat Magazine). In the summer of 2017, Shanghai Jazz was passed on to Thomas Donohoe with a 29 year career in hospitality, 18 of those years he was a chef, leading award winning kitchens from New Jersey to Montana, Florida, and New York City. He trained with some of the best chefs in the world including Thomas Keller, at the French Laundry in Yountville, CA, Jonathan Waxman at Barbuto in NYC, and Bill Pete at Café des Artistes, also in NYC. Throughout his career, Tom has been focused on and committed to providing exquisite dining experiences to all his guests. Now, Tom and Shanghai Jazz’s team of culinary and hospitality professionals carry on the tradition, driven by a collective passion to bring good people together with world-class live music, great food, and gracious hospitality to create an exceptionally fun dining experience.
