Here is some interesting footage I found on KZbin of a few guys out climbing, they all looked like they were having a great time and overall it was a great day, but I still thought it would be a good time for me to offer my two cents.

I feel like I’m looking into a time machine 😂 This is like the weird mix of 80s and 2000s knowledge that we had in like 2010 when people were still pretty offline.

Thanks for the video! I quite like this series; it really helps solidify concepts and techniques when you see them in a real world setting. I was actually belayed like this on my first multi-pitch alone with my partner a couple weeks after we went on a MP course together. Before setting off, I asked if they were confident in being able to belay from above (in guide mode), and they said yes. Not wanting to pressure them, I took the answer at face value and didn't ask for a demonstration while we were on the ground. I lead the first pitch and they lead the second. Thankfully, I noticed the error as soon as I got to the anchor and told my partner. What's a bit unsettling, though, is that I wanted to take a fall on purpose that pitch to increase my confidence in the belayer (something we had done many times on lead, for example). I had a gut feeling, though, that it wasn't a good time to do that. I realized, given that it was our first MP alone, there was potential for errors like that to occur. It was an interesting experience, though, because it really impacted the trust I had built up with that partner over the previous year of climbing together. The rest of that climb in particular was actually okay; I ended up leading the rest of the pitches and really enjoyed it, but after that even the trust I had for them while I was on lead had been impacted and I often found myself focusing more on the belayer than on the climbing. Some time later we spent a few days on some very easy climbs and focused on the techniques and rope handling in general, which has increased the confidence again. Anywho. As they say, trust your gut..

that's a terrifying sight... I would add to the first bit of video, that the central biner is only used to secure the belayer so if the right bolt fails the whole anchor would be shock-loaded with this configuration instead of having real redundancy by clipping the belay device to the center biner.

Thanks for the video Ryan. It would be nice if you first played the video as a whole (or important sections) as now you are talking about the whole video and we haven't seen it. Looking forward to more
