Hey my wife and I fled to UY after Jan 6. We're legal permanent residents and I can tell you people were cheering in the street. But in fairness, the last president was actually not bad. I swear more people should consider moving. Guaranteed healthcare, college, human rights, and strong labor protections are actually worth pursuing. It's not a utopia though.

The first Chilean constitution was not horribly made, I read the damn thing, it was fine. The problem is the media is captured by right wing corporate interests and our president didn't fight back the BS as hard as he should, so a lot of people ended up believing some real stupid shit (like nobody would be allowed to own a house). Edit: Also in our recent Mayoral and Gubernatorial races the far right and a lot of centrist figures lost big, the progressives won emblematic victories, and the less extreme conservatives only made slight gains. One far right high profile candidate for governor didn't pick up a single town and lost about 30% to 70%, while another high profile conservative with all the power and money backing her had her mayoral career of the largest town in the country ended by an independent firebrand progressive who won through community work and small donor donations. It feels like next year's congressional and presidential elections are gonna be rough on the right and the center unless something major changes.

A few notes: Orsi did not win the first round with 89%. If he did, he would've become president then as 50%+1 vote is the given threshold for that election. He did however beat the candidate in second place by like 20 points. Secondly, the 3 point margin in the runoff is even more impressive when you take into account every other party in our country banded against him. That is, in fact, the only reason they were able to beat the left in 2019. Thirdly, and this is just a fun tidbit of history, but it is speculated this current system was created specifically to prevent the left leaning party from winning. If we kept our previous system, which had a single election cycle, Tabaré Vázquez would've won the 1999 election. In spite of that, he won in 2005 with an _overwhelming_ majority during the first round.

Never say "America" to refer to the US in Argentina lol US people are not to blame though, it's a clash of Spanish and English, same word different political and geographical meanings. Also, we don't say "Spanish", we call our language "Castilian". A few other countries do it, too.

How is "Castilian" vs. "Español"?

@themousemage "Castellano" comes from Castilla, an old kingdom that's now in Spain. It's the "Spanish" to Spain. Usually people call only Spanish Spanish Castellano.

Yo digo Español o Castellano, según con qué pie me levanté, la verdad. También hay mucha gente que usa "Americano" para hablar de estadounidenses (pero no "América" para hablar de EEUU, porque América es América y que estos gringos se dejen de joder, viejo)
@Ukitsu2Ай бұрын
@@themousemage Almost always the meaning is exactly the same. Only linguists (and the like) need to know the differences in certain contexts. I think the reason some countries call it "Spanish" and others "Castilian" is because of the first Europeans that got to those countries back when they were Spanish colonies, the Castilians called it Spanish and the people from the rest of Spain called it Castilian (lol); that was because back then Castile was trying to impose its language in the whole kingdom. In my case, I feel like a foreigner in my own country if I say "Español" instead of "Castellano", I'm just too used to "Castilian", but both are perfectly fine. To add more to the mess, I'm 25% Spanish, I had a grandfather born in the heart of Castile, so I'm failing at my ancestors' imperialism because I never use "Español/Spanish" to refer to the language xD Like someone said, it's more of a feeling... and messy human History.
