As someone who is black and watched the original Good Times with my parents at times, this "reboot" is nothing like the original. The original's message was "hey, we may be in a tough situation and struggling right now, but someday, we will overcome our current problems and thrive in the future." It painted a optimistic yet realistic look at how your typical black inner-city families would look like, hence why it was relatable at the time, and still relatable today. The "reboot" though, is like a writer who is not familiar with black culture watched the news and looked at social media to see how the black community would operate and then run with it. Very heavy with the stereotypes, surface-level pandering, and nothing like the original show (I saw that Seth MacFarlane was one of the main writers of this show and now it's all starting to make sense). In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this started out as an original project but only got greenlit after it was named after an established property (I feel this way about Velma as well). Studios are too scared to invest in original projects anymore and are just retrofitting those projects as "reboots" of older established shows, even though they are nothing alike. Animation-wise, it's very choppy and stiff. As an animator/creative assistant myself, I'm trained to have an eye on what "good" animation should look like. The art style is not animation-friendly, which would explain why it's so stiff. They had to cut corners to keep the art style consistent. When you have to do that, then the art style is too detailed for animation, the quality will suffer. 1:43 is a perfect example. The duo shot and the walk cycles. Zero in-betweens, just snapping into two of the same poses, obvious repeating frames, etc. That is just very amateurish "animation". The backgrounds and characters don't even look like they belong together. Choppy animation can be done correctly and used effectively (Into the Spiderverse, claymation, etc) but this looks lazy.

What makes the boondocks animation so well made is that they hired a Korean studio to animate it, giving it that classic 2000’s anime style

I'm a fan of three things. Fantasy, Mythology, and Dancehall. If you were to ask me to write a show about black people, it would involve some African mythologies and spiritualities. I'll have black mystics and shamans. It'd be set in the Carribean, and would involve Dancehall music. If anyone wants to steal my idea, go ahead. Even if it flops, it'd be a lot more respectable than this bullshit.

@@michaelthecinebro The world is full of untapped material, but all people wanna do is recycle old tropes and cliches. And that is EXACTLY what this new Goodtimes is. A couple years ago, I've found out that Friday (with Ice Cube) got a cartoon, and it was FAR from politically correct. But I thought it was hilarious. This good times "reboot" is a like a bad version of the Friday cartoon, but worse, with added politics. Frankly, I'd like to see a black show that DOESN'T focus on the ghetto, racism, or "The Struggle". It's like people treat these things as the defining characteristics of black culture, as if black culture CAN'T BE ANYTHING BEYOND THESE THINGS. As someone who enjoys mythology, fantasy, and magic, I'd want to see black people be included in the fantasy genre, in a fantasy world based around actual African mythologies, practicing magic and spiritualities based on African and Carribean cultures, and just being an overall positive, thought-provoking, and well written story. And we can include as much sex appeal as we want. Spirituality doesn't have to be family friendly (it actually isn't). If we truly care about black representation, this is the sort of story we should want.

The original show ended a couple of years before I was born, but I did watch reruns of in the 80s and 90s. The first couple of seasons with John Amos was best. Esther and John were adamant of not perpetuating negative black stereotypes, hence why we had John in the first place. The show was just about a family and their struggles, while not falling into the bad parts like gangs for instance. There was an episode where Michael wanted to join a gang due to something that happened. Of course the issue resolved itself, but it was showing that not all black people act ghetto or are hustlers (or condone it) and all that stuff. Florida and James' characters were hardworking and provided the best for their children while trying to instill moral values. They even focused on the importance of education so that the kids would have a better chance and opportunities than they did. This reboot seems to be a slap in the face to everything the original series was trying to portray initially.
@fakshen19738 ай бұрын
The vast majority of black people don't condone the lifestyles and thuggishness of what you see in the media. But it sells, especially to people who aren't black. No one wants to see an ordinary black guy drive to and from his everyday job in a stock Toyota Camry. He's about as invisible as an F-35. But as soon as some joker covers himself in gold, thumps bass out of his trunk, and becomes a meme... all the cameras start recording. A camera can only record 25% of what's around at best.
@nailsarecruel8 ай бұрын
Exactly. I saw this show in my Netflix recommendations and wondered if it was related to the original. Where's lanky JJ and his signature hat, I thought. So it IS related, but who is this show for? I'm 44 and watched reruns of Good Times in the 80s so for sure, the original audience are outside target age demographic for this animation. Good Times and a lot of other minority driven shows of that period were groundbreaking because they offered a truer perspective on 'minority living' to a public that had a tainted or negative perception of them. This is another case where the creators could have claimed it to be an original series then sometime down the line admit it was inspired or related, but they didn't want to go with that angle. I'm tired of 'adult animation' anyway, so I'll leave it at that. No hate watching or following Good Times for me.

The animation alone from the reboot is just mind boggling that it was allowed to look like that. It's not even minimal. It's just BAD. And the thing with Meat is his designs are purposely horrific but the animation is so fluid and detailed, you can decide if it's beautiful for embracing the craft or uncomfortable for.... embracing the craft. The designs in this are exaggerated but bro, the movements. Why are they so janky? It's not even 2000s era Flash toon janky. It's like it's actually lagging. And maybe this is me being an adult woman but....what the fuck is up with the period obsessions? And I don't get the commentary they were trying to give. It's like... I'm Black. You know what happened when it happened? My mom got me some pads and we moved on. The obsession is creepy as shit.

One reason I think we cant have shows that are so satirical is because we constantly go in deep with everything and attempt to deconstruct things to be in our own narratives. Think most writing rooms aren't bad or terrible but you can tell especially for streaming shows they only go for writers that have low pay because they no the normie will watch even if its bad. The way you can look at how it tries to do commentary but instead of finding roots and reasoning it uses the references beforehand to set their points, how family guy cut aways had too and shows did in the 2000s to make a game reference. Sometimes it's a crutch or be a way to be simple and digest the idea,. then you get show that sit you down and tell you to listen and shut up. it's like every other adult comedy from the last decade, the target is teens that want feel like adults because the age rating.

ok all your points are valid but please don't blame the animators ? as i was trying to be one myself i can tell you even the greatest character animator cannot fix an already approved bad design. for example even if you animated the dad character the smoothest way you could possibly can that doesn't stop him from looking automatically ugly. Boondocks for its run since 2005 had a very good budget and looking at the other produced shows during that time, boondocks most likley had the highest budget for an animated show on AD plus since it was being produced by adult swim (the program most well known for experimentation and giving powers to the creators) the creators had a bunch of stuff they wanted to put in there is a bigger chance it will get added. That is why boondocks could look so good because they let them. Netflix has been sadly spitting in our face regarding animation with the numerous lay offs and canceling of actually great animated shows so they could spit out this cheaper made production because if this doesn't do well they can just sweep it under the rug and pretend like it didn't do well because its just another adult themed animated show they made and not because it was horribly made

The deboot's animation is a mix of Pickle and Peanut and Fishhooks animation combined with Family Guy unfortunately it dips into Uncanny Valley as they try to mix different animations including real life depictions of objects or animals and it just makes everything look weird but you could always deal with it for those shows(Not Pickle and Peanut) because of the comedy making up for it.
