Glad to see you guys are warming up. 2012we had a drought here in Michigan.baled at lot of reeds canary grass, cows ate it but didn't like it..better than tree bark...ha. be safe..

A few years ago I was short of straw just like this year and I bought some 4 year old grass bales that had been baled really late and rank and I used it for bedding and the darn cows would eat half of it every night because it was different from the corn silage and alfalfa hay they were being fed.
@DennysCountryLife6 жыл бұрын
Yep, canary grass is a problem around here. I always have a hard time getting it to dry in a reasonable amount of time, but it does make great bedding/feed if you can cut at the right time.

I have never used a machine like that and that’s cool and can u grind it like that in spots for them to eat it?
@outdoorswithlarryrobin6 жыл бұрын
Same issue on my farm, my haybuster has an adjustment that grinds the bale finer, seems like its less drag on the tractor
@stevemondal.6 жыл бұрын
Tyson do you every have enough left over straw of hay you sell for mulch or cover to the construction side of your family? Your bull C-183 is as talkative as Shaun, LOL. Congrats on a good looking herd, Travis and Ryan have some work to catch up with you guys.

Nice looking bull Tyson. Are all you bulls that calm? Or do you weed out any aggressive ones? Have a good one.
@johnfox13826 жыл бұрын
Pretty much have to make hay out of reed canary grass in late May or the first week of June or its just sticks here in nova Scotia too. Them cows look like they are really scared of you, you can always tell when people spend more time with animals it really makes them calm.

Good use of crappy hay. At least you aren't letting it sit and rot. Nice looking bull, always loved the sinintal breed. Everyone around here has a hard of for Black Angus. I enjoy seeing your cows, miss the black white face ect.

Good video, good cows too. You guys spend a lot of time with them though. That helps. I have no experience with Reed canary grass, but if cows won't eat it I'd over seed with something they would. You seem to have plenty of oats and barley to make bedding.

Cows won’t eat it other than bedding what is it good for?
@Northern_Farmer6 жыл бұрын
If you can cut it when its really young its ok.....the cows will eat it.
@georgedoorley56286 жыл бұрын
i have been spreading out moldy hay for bedding all winter as straw cannot be got for any money in ireland
@SteelyPaw6 жыл бұрын
I guess the bales they won't eat, they can at least lay down in it, nice and clean. Animals really do have particular taste buds. For example, my cat won't eat fish or some brands of canned cat food regardless how hungry she is, but there are certain brands even less expensive that she loves. Thanks for your video as always.....
@Northern_Farmer6 жыл бұрын
Yes... reed canary grass has to be cut very young... and the ground this hay comes from is government and your not allowed to cut until mid july
@SteelyPaw6 жыл бұрын
Be nice if for once they'd share without conditions on it. Farmers need all the help and land they can get as people depend on them so much. It's only fair the government helps out, but they should do it without stipulation. I was not aware even of reed canary grass. Most I saw on farms was hay, straw, cow corn, and wheat. I use to help bail straw as a kid, they left me drive the Farmall H, at about 12 years old lol.. I got good enough I was allowed to take the loaded wagon to the barn and back it in.
@Johndeere-lf9pg6 жыл бұрын
we don't have much straw in our county so we bale several hundred reed canary bales and sell them every year. People use them like straw. We usually bale them in later summer after the seed heads have fell off. Most people cant tell the difference.

Straw has been invaluable in recent years. Have even used cattail bales for some extremely cheap bedding before in past years. Our cows would demolish that reed canary grass. Can you pet any of your bulls?
@Northern_Farmer6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all the bulls are quiet
@thr80616 жыл бұрын
Knowing cows, if you use it as feed, they will just look at it. But if you spread some real crappy stuff, they will attack it like it was molasses!
@ScotWalt8586 жыл бұрын
All good!

Cows love anything that they might think they are stealing LOL. Put crappy hay in a feeder they will stay away from it but spread it out on the ground for bedding anf they eat it like as if iws candy.
