I suppose a lot of people forget that China doesn't have the same race politics as the US. Matt Damon being cast was more selling out than anything else.
@azraelswrd
@azraelswrd 8 жыл бұрын
Yep, China doesn't care. They just wanted to sell this to USA market so the easiest way to do this is by forcing some white people into their movie (The Martian, guy from Game of Thrones and DaFoe). They know this will make back their budget at home, so USA will be the test abroad.

Actually most people in other countries don't give a shit either... Me and non of my friends were upset Luke wasn't a Mexican Pepper Farm Hand with a thick accent when Star Wars came out... yet we pretended to be him... Same, we watched Kung Fu Movies and we never bitched about race... Gotta love the 80's abroad...

From the sounds of it they just bullshitted a reason for Matt Damon's character to exist in the movie so that they could have Matt Damon. It's because of this vestigial role that makes me kinda glad it didn't make double it's budget. Which is a shame, because except for the meta of me constantly shaking my head at Matt Damon existing, the movie was indeed great. His character could have easily been replaced with a peasant conscripted for the war effort and trained in the ways of these amazing soldiers (thus giving more of a chance for legitimate worldbuilding) if they wanted to do the fish out of water story or introduce the audience to the setting. That's what they did for Edge of Tomorrow and Mulan.

GoodBadFlicks I mean in different way. For you see if their movies become more successful on the west Chinese will try to expand more in that direction. Their style will become more popular and new age of cinema will evolve instead of return to nostalgia. China is open to buisness. That is their greatest perk. They still have problems inside the country but soon we can open the borders... in more cultural way.

House of flying daggers is a movie that would be very hard to top. The shots and setpieces, the mise en scene, colors and lighting and story were just so beautifully done. Especially the drum dance. Amazing. Saddened to hear this was disappointing. I almost always agree with you. Will probably check it out regardless though. Seems like the best venue for it would be on big screen.

I saw the trailer before and was interested in the film being a really big chinese production. (Not so much because of the story depicted in the trailer though.) It´s pretty interesting to know though that it was done by the same person who did "house of flying daggers" because that movie was indeed awesome. All in all it´s cool to have heard someone make a good critique of the movie before considering to watch it. (So basically thank you person who made the video.)

When I first saw the trailer, the caption said something along the lines of "for what purpose was the Great Wall built?" When I heard this... I said aloud, "To protect against the Mongols..." A couple folks in the audience chuckled at this.

Yep, that's been the recurring criticism for the bad editing/pacing issues. Not the first time this has happened. I remember watching Red Cliff (full version) and loved it. Then my sister rented the edited version from Netflix and I was confused because nearly an hour of material was missing with complete subplots. China loves making epic movies but when they sell it overseas, they hack it down to fit some pre-established time frame. Hopefully, when this goes to DVD, the "complete" version will be available.

GoodBadFlicks - Nice. That album, and “Under the Influence” were staples of my youth. Along with Metallica, Anihillator, Megadeth, etc etc. Overkill never sold out their sound, except for the thankfully one time only experimentation of “I hear Black” in the early 90’s. Anyway, we have to be the same age cuz every joke and reference in your clips is spot-on to my youth. You actually remind me a lot of me and my buddy Derek with your style of humor. And I think we may be sort of neighbors...I think u may be from PA, and I’m in MD (Baltimore). Anyways, great videos, you are very talented and entertaining, and have great taste for the most part!

I hope he only reserves Exploring vids for "good" bad flicks. Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation and ST3: Marauder were bad-bad flicks. #2 was all over the place and #3 pretty much sabotaged the universe Heinlen created. Only sequel that managed to respect the property was the animated DTV Starship Troopers Invasion, which came out after the live action movies. Only shining light throughout all of the darkness was Casper Van Diens, who always played Rico. I heard the Roughnecks animated series wasn't bad, but I haven't seen it myself.

+azraelswrd Roughneck Chronicles was a great show let down by the time and format it was presented in. It being an late 1990s cartoon meant any real violence was toned down, clear attempts at getting around swearing was everywhere, hardly anyone died and the animation is 90s poser CGI so it hasn't really held up. Had it come out now on Spike TV or Adult Swim it would be more able to be even better.

the great wall had a good concept but considering the budget and that visual effects have progressed the monsters were not well designed and the cg was pretty poor.Idont care about a white actor in a chinese film if he was put in it to sell the film to the world .He wasnt playing a chinese roll so i dont see what the problem is .What put me off were the bad cgi creatures.Much of the first Jurrasic park still looks great now but they used a mixture of pratical and cg.

I'm in total agreement. I also loved House of Flying Daggers and I like Andy Lau a lot. The film was ok... the monsters looked far too artificial and after the big first act battle, the film becomes a bit of a slog fest. There was also some sloppy editing, especially in the opening camp attack where Damon's character kills the first monster. It was a wild concept and they needed to go balls deep to make it work, but they held back and that just made the film feel goofy.

TL; DR: Loved it, would recommend it. The "bad" things, to me, are minor at most. I'll admit, I at first avoided this movie because I was rolling my eyes at the possibility of it being a white savior sort of thing, or even having Matt Damon's character be some sort of white-wash, but when I went to see the movie, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. Well... okay matt damon did kinda save the day, but he wouldn't have been able to get anywhere close to it without Lin. It was just as much her movie as it was his, if not more so. I found that the reason for Matt Damon's character to be there made sense, both historically and morally. Western cultures have always had a different view on weaponry than eastern cultures, and they illustrate it fairly well in the movie with the "black powder" dilemma. I didn't know who was directing the movie or what the crew was like before going into the movie, but just watching it, I could tell it wasn't a movie made in the USA because of, as GBF mentioned, the use of color, and just the level of chinese culture that was ingrained in the movie.

THIS MOVIE HAS ALREADY GROSSED 224 MILLION DOLLARS WORLDWIDE (not including US dollars yet) Thats insane. It's so crazy that movies can be so crap and still make so much money, haha. Since its a chinese movie, and their market is so huge, is it just a given it's going to make a ton of movie? Also side note, I am surprised a ridiculous movie like MONSTER TRUCKS lost so much money, as the concept should have worked in a place like China or other asian countries...right?

I liked this movie, with some caveats. The race politics in this movie are a Western thing. Really, it's cultural politics, and I dislike how the primacy of race in America overshadowed the cultural questions the movie brought up. The movie shows an understanding of Western individualism that has some accuracy but vastly oversimplifies it. Damon's character, all his life, has had to be subservient to lords and develop his skillset under extreme pressure in order to survive. This is accurate in general to how the West works, being valuable in order to be appreciated is a thing, but there is a lot of subtlety of what a valuable person is and an entire philosophical tradition of mercy, love, and goodness that is fundamentally ignored here. They treat the Western culture as more ruthless than it is. It makes sense for the Chinese to do this and I don't begrudge them the viewpoint, but I am one of those freaks who thinks that conversation should have been deeper and more balanced, even if it made the film drag a bit more and made it excessively brainy. The Chinese present their own culture in a pseudo-communist light where belonging to your society and trusting your leaders outpaces your individual value in practical terms, but leads to unified action and identity that makes the group formidable. It glosses over some of the questions that come from hierarchy and conformity, but it is also accurate in general to how Confucian societies work (and theoretical visions of communism). Chinese social philosophy on film is not great, but they do have Hero, which is very very good and better than what the West puts out most of the time. People should recognize that there is no entertainment of this kind without a philosophy, and I wish it were done better across the board.

I prefer asian flicks to not star western characters just for "appeal". it didn't really do much in seven samurai and from the sounds of it just doesn't do much here. stick to making a good story rather than trying to force appeal and i think such things should do better.

romance interest is "straight out of hollywood" but strong warrior women commander using melee weapons is TOTALLY REALISTIC and not a massively over played Hollywood trope from the "current year" ? hrm

I think he meant how, in hollywood, the two main characters that's a male and a female ALWAYS get together in most movies, no matter what. It's like when there's two people of opposite gender is in the same movie that's the main characters, they HAVE to put them together. We hardly see when this isn't the case- one example where this isn't the case is Pacific Rim though their relationship is up to interpretation. As for the strong woman using a melee weapon...so? I don't get what your trying to say with this one.

+dark1810 Gee, do you think maybe it's trope from Asian action movies? Or have you not watched any of those?

Women with super model bodies in reality can't fight like that. It's just a made up fantasy NERDY BETA MALES like to fantasize, something true alpha males know better than to fall for. The Chinese and Japanese are long known to enjoy fantasizing about strong & beautiful warrior women in their shows (anime and live movies alike). It's sad how nerdy meta males don't want to identify and look up to Strong Alpha males no more, and just want to be submissive to females. There's nothing wrong in upholding and respecting traditional masculinity, while still showing respect for women. It's simply a beautiful sight seeing a strong man & woman stand side by side and complement each other, rather than domineer over the other. Isn't that what EQUALITY is all about?

Alpha and beta-males is not a real thing. It's just what insecure people say to pretend that they are tough.

@@apanapandottir205 You're an idiot and you let that pansy Adam ruins everything convince you of that. There are already many studies that an alpha always rises within a group of males to take charge. You obviously don't identify with a male like that lol.

To all those eejits complaining about whitewashing do a mental game. Remove matt Damons character from this and ask yourself - who's speaking English. Cause that's one of the reasons he's in it. Pretty much everyone else is speaking mandarin. There even a bit where the commander lies to him about insulting language being aimed at him. Hell there's even a pro China bit where they compare civilisations. Sometimes I wonder if sjws have brains at all. On the film I view it as a kids version of "aliens" set on earth during the middle ages, and in that light it's a hell of alot of fun.

There's too much Matt Damon in ANY movie. To me, he's one of the most overrated "actors" on this planet. It's a miracle he gets work. but, I guess if Melanie Griffith can...
