Our favourite way to welcome Spring on the Ramshackle Ranch, is to build a new productive garden where there was once just a bunch of weeds, surrounded by the songs of birds. That sounds pretty good on its own, but this time, we experiment with some free materials and clean up our bush a little.

I am jealous of the quality of food that you are producing. Every now and then I get hold of vegetables grown similar to the way you are doing it and I am blown away by the flavors. So much better than the grocery store. Also, love the way you are treating your animals. They look so well cared for.

Awesome garden and loved seeing the birds. Did you just go all Salt Bae there Troy? lol. I was saving this bit thinking I'd see more of that steak but as it seems not likely I'll tell you now. Any night you pan fry any of those steaks, don't wash the pan up. Put it in the fridge and fry your eggs in it in the morning and thank me later. cheers.

Your explanation of the technical aspects of your gardening system, Troy, is both interesting and helpful. Thanks. The birds and animals in the video however seemed like they had the same question on their minds that I did. I couldn't help but notice that Pascale was absent from the video and that combined with the fact that she was due in late August and it's now mid September leads me to think that she might not be feeling on top of the world right now. I do hope, as I'm sure many others do, that she is doing OK and that we will soon be seeing the announcement of the family addition. You are all three in my thoughts and prayers. I hope she has an easy delivery.

Thank you for that. Hey guys, I know there's been a tonne of gardening books written, plus small scale farming books, particularly in the late 60's onwards, but I would love to see a book written by you guys. Yes you are busy. Yes you have a bubba on the way, yes you need to find a publisher etc etc...but I for one would buy a copy, and add it to my library of similar books. Again thank you for sharing your knowledge and thank you for taking the time to upload. Atb from across the ditch here in Nz.

We'll take that as a compliment! We have talked about a combined garden, livestock, cook book. It would be hard to top the River Cottage Cookbook in that respect, but probably a pretty good resource. Now, we just need to shoehorn a few more hours into our day!

Another cracking video, guys - even the B-roll, which I confess normally leaves me cold with most channels, is just plain charming when it's Free Range B-Roll! :) So we're starting to get to grips with our new garden and high on the list is going to be a few raised beds to grow veggies in so your videos are proving instructional as well as entertaining, coz what I know about gardening can be written on a stamp after the Lord's Prayer :) Our rescue dog's arrival got put back to next month (October) so we're counting the days on that too, so all the best and hope all's going well for you all. PS: Loved the WA birds! Amazing colours and markings! Looked like various finches to me but of course I'm not big on birdwatching so couldn't say for sure ... looked lovely though :)

That technique is as easy as falling out of a dinghy (I know) so I'm sure you will have every success if you decide to experiment with that style. The small bird at the very beginning is called a Silvereye here, and they are the scourge of people who like unblemished fruit. They have a bit of a sweet tooth (beak?) The other two black and white birds are our version of Robin Red Breasts. Very bold and charming little creatures.

We will indeed be trying the "no dig" method, primarily because a) I'm a cripple and b) who wants to dig anything if a tractor isn't involved? The birds were utterly charming although if they were eating my fruit and/or veggies I'd probably feel differently :) And yes, properly bold :) @@FreeRangeLiving

Seaweed also makes for a very successful base layer. In fact, that garden can be made on concrete if seaweed is layed down a few inches thick, then the rest as shown. I'll have to make one for the camera and record the results.

Great video mate. Will this system of garden establishment cover straight over lawn?
@FreeRangeLiving
@FreeRangeLiving Жыл бұрын
Yes. give it a mow and cover it with plain cardboard. Some people also use newspaper, 4 sheets thick, which is probably better than reading them. One think- lawn will try and invade from the edges of the garden over time, so some edge strategy is required. Remember, not to dig and give each layer a soak as you build it.

I’m curious, you appear to go to lengths to give other livestock as natural an environment as possible but not for the rabbits. It’s not particularly difficult to build a run with chicken wire base to prevent escapees. Why not give them a healthier, happier, more natural life too?
@FreeRangeLiving
@FreeRangeLiving Жыл бұрын
We are building a rabbit tractor for our newborn kits, but over here it is healthier to keep breeders high off the ground because of some pretty diabolical viruses released here to control rabbits. Morants are off limited success here- I checked it out. The cages they are in give the best ventilation and keep them free of excrement, which is why they are the most widespread rabbit housing. All of those rabbits were born on wire and when we let them out, they crouch frozen, very nervous.
