The setup was perfection. The flashbacks, and slow zoom outs. It hangs on that wide shot in general silence for so long, so you think it's over...then that line is spoken and it's like a punch in the gut. Masterful.

@@Rutabega_NGtrue. Never thought of that. This time, I started tearing up the moment Merry called out to Iceberg. The 1st time I cried was when I was reading the manga. What made me cry then was all the flashbacks. It hits much more coz I grew up with the crew during my teens. The volume this was in (Vol 44) came out in Dec 2006 (I Googled), so I was 17 at the time. By that time, I've been reading One Piece monthly for about 5 or 6 years..so reading all those panels with flashbacks to previous arcs and remembering all the adventures we had together..that was the 1st time I really bawled my eyes out from reading something..

Hey guys. A hell lot of fans never notices that and I don't know if you did, but before the events of Ennys Lobby, Robin always called the crewmates by their functions and never by their names. It was a defense mechanism for Robin to try to avoid feeling attached to them. Luffy used to be "Captain", Nami "Navigator", Chopper used to be called "Doctor" and so on. After the "I Want to Live" scene, Robin never again did that. She always call them by their names now. She accepted them as a family and now she feels accepted as well. Small details like that is what make Oda's writing so beautiful.
@Rebel-cd6gc6 ай бұрын
Since they are at thriller bark on patreon I won't be spoiling by talking about the following: There's another little detail that a lot of fans also don't notice. When Usopp apologizes and comes back into the crew, he also stops referring to himself as"Captain Usopp".

The crew has names! Robin now calls them by name instead of title. She finally feels safe. Spandam is _severely_ injured. Usually not a fan of revenge, but I'll make an exception for this one. This crew is so ridiculously strong. Even the ones who don't realize they're strong. Looking at you, Usopp.

Lately I always tear up at Luffy’s speech to Merry at the end. Although I did cry during my first watch, I never understood it as well until I lost my dog recently- it died in my arms and all I could think about was how I could have taken better care of them. It just hurts more when you lose someone or something’s life that you were responsible for.

Also yeah that scene with Robin breaking Spandam, it's just so good, like Robin is merciless, she doesn't have much on screen fights with named techniques of her, but I feel that makes them so special, because they also so specially brutal, always reserved to people who truly deserve it.
