I used to do acrylic nails. Don't forget the speed of the dremel can cause heat. If the dog is jerking away it could be because it's getting too hot. Try not to hold it in the same spot for too long.

I've been clipping and dremeling my GSD's thick black nails for his 9-year life and have had good instruction along the way. But yours is the most clear and visually helpful I've seen. Now I understand the quick much better, how to work around it, and a good explanation on holding those outer toes. Thank you. Wish I had found your videos earlier.

Thank you! I dont think I put enough pressure as I am dremeling.

I really needed this video! This has been an ongoing issue with us, and I thought I was being nutty thinking that those outer nails are always longer. As soon as her nails have any ground pressure on them our dog incessantly licks until she gets an infection. Hates having her nails done but also hates when her nails are too long. 🙄

My bichon is going to be sedated tomorrow because although I’ve always clipped her nails and ground them as short as I can her nail bed (quick) is very long. It’s got to the point now that the nails curl over. I’ve been pointing this out to the vet for years but now they’re finally going to cut them right back under GA. I was told by one vet and groomer that if I kept grinding the nails regularly the quick would shorten but then I was told by another vet that was nonsense. What is you view and how do I keep on top of this issue if cutting and grinding won’t stop the quick from growing so long?

I replied to your other comment fyi, but here’s one more thing I should add: if your vet it talking about cutting into the quick while the dog is sedated and then essentially cauterizing the bleeding, this is generally considered an “old school” method because of the chance for infection to develop after the procedure. I will make a video explaining my perspective on this debate (it’s on my “videos to make” list!) but it’s important to remember it IS a debate. The “right” answer might not be known fully and also may depend on the dog and the situation. Check out the 3 videos I shared in my reply to your other comment and see if that helps at all. Best of luck and reach out again if you need!
