The iconic gangster film GoodFellas had much of its scenes filmed in Astoria, Queens, New York City and home to Tony Bennett. The story begins in East New York in 1955 where Henry Hill grew up across from Paulie's brother's cab stand. It was where young Henry got his first job working for the mob. Tony Sirico played Tony Stacks and older Henry Hill is played by Ray Liotta. Paul Sorvino played Paulie Cicero-the boss-who didn't want a telephone. All of the 1955 scenes were filmed in Astoria, Queens. Rest in peace Paul Sorvino, Tony Sirico and Ray Liotta-true GoodFellas

My wife and I were having a conversation the other week about the fact that in the last 10 to 15 years there are no movies that have or will be considered classics in the future. We thought maybe The Dark Knight but that was all we could come up with. Then we went to 20 years and older and immediately started naming dozens of movies. 1975 to 2000 produced the greatest movies ever.

The movie is so well-paced. With this scene, it's relaxed and easy, and really conveys a sense of tranquility and serenity. Then compare it to the scene where Henry is coked up and running around, and it's almost suffocating with the quick cuts and close up shots. Scorsese is so good at using all aspects of the movie, not just the script, to tell a story.

I saw an interview where Paul Sorvino went and auditioned for Paulie but he thought he was awful and I can't remember 100% but I think he walked out or said "I don't wanna waste your time" but look how he nailed this role. The Godfather I & II were way superior to Goodfellas. I'm not saying Goodfellas is a bad film. On the contrary it's a great film. However, compared to the first two Godfather films and the Sopranos series, it has lost its lustre. Yes, Scorcese did a great job stylising the life of Henry Hill. However its that stylising that makes a great film but unfortunately, detracts from the real Henry Hill and the genuine life in the Nafia. It is not fun or glamorous. Your broke most of the time and live in absolute fear and dread 90 per cent of the time as you don't know when you will be murdered by your so-called 'friends.' Scorcrse gives us a glimpse of this at the end of Goodfellas. If you read the book written by Henry Hill's children, you will never view Goodfellas again with such fondness. Hill was a low life who treated his wife, and subsequently, his children like dirt. Hill only cared about himself. Even when in the FBI's Witness Protection program, Henry Hill jeopardised their lives. Hill would call New York and try and organise, for example, ecstasy deals in the middle of nowhere, i.e., some nameless town in Nebraska. Hill and his family came close to being killed on at least two occasions. On one occasion, the FBI got them out about 20 minutes before the hit men arrived. Hill was so drunk that he couldn't even remember calling New York and betraying his whereabouts. His wife found out that they had been kicked out of Witness Protection as the film Goodfellas was doing the rounds of the world wide cinemas.

Times change and generations grow old. I don’t think it’s a lack of quality actors, but this era was a long time ago. You can’t expect a new crop of actors who grew up in neighborhoods like this. When Goodfellas came out, 1955 was 35 years ago. Today, 35 years ago is 1988. New eras, new stories, and so on and so on.

Did you ALL Notice how Paulie was phone-phobic?? And, Then, years later, Jimmy says to Henry in The Diner: "I've been telling you your Whole LIFE...don't talk on the Telephone. NOW do you see what I Mean??" Like an Anton Chekov play: "If you introduce a gun in the First scene, you need to use it by the Third scene."
