Dude, I really appreciate you sharing this revelation! This is very relevant, and I've definitely been experiencing a lot of this myself on my own projects. Your game looks very lively! I love the details of the story/history of where your character is (in the cheese mine) and all of your added thoughtfulness about all these things. I've come up with a lot of artless things myself (which is always disappointing when you've put so much into it, especially considering how artful thoughtful creation can be.) I just really appreciate that you recognize that this is a problem and how you've shared your own struggle and solution. I'm definitely buying dewdrop as soon as it comes out! This is actually looking so cool! I'd love to see te final game once finished (and, of course, play it). May I recommend you something... IMO, it'd be really cool if every time you finish a zone, the NPC dialogues change. For example, when you let all the slaves free on the pits, they can thank you or so. And maybe a post-game dialogue like "oh, I see you could get your wings. Congratulations!" Or something like that. I know that'd take its time, but, as a player, those are very little but very cool and highly appreciated details. Your game is looking fantastic up until now. Hope you can go far with this.

Weird idea, I think that the main character should have a bubble underwater so that could be used to explain how he is underwater. Also maybe make it so when you take damage in this area, the bubble shrinks until it breaks, and the break could be used as a death animation.

About that waterlevel... One thing many exploration games use is the inclusion of areas that you are yet unable to enter. You could have the water visible for example, but when you try to enter you simply get the prompt "No way! I'd drown with no air" That gives the player a clue to find air in order to reach this now mysterious area... Well, later on you kill a boss that had a fishbowl on his head, and he just so happened to drop that.... This will promt the player to think of what that could be used for, and they get excited to get back and see if they can enter the water. Probably a bad explanation, im on phone and haven't watched the entire video yet. Also not a native english speaker so sorry for any spelling spoofs.

It's important to step back from what you're doing an occasionally ask yourself, "what am I doing? what is the player doing? is it fun? are the unfun parts necessary? can I make the unfun parts fun?". As you work on something, you'll build up some habits, routines, mechanics, etc. which are just sort of there because you thought they were necessary or that you just made without thinking about them. It's good to reevaluate these kind of things. For example, in a game similar to Dewdrop Dynasty, if there is a part of the map the player will walk through for a long time without doing much, is that section of the map necessary? You could shrink it, skip over it and imply the player walked for awhile, or just remove the section. If that's not possible, how can you make walking through an open room fun? You could put obstacles in the room which aren't very hard but are satisfying to complete. You could make sure the player has access to something which makes moving through a large, open area fast or fun. In Hollow Knight, the crystal dash makes big open areas a breeze. It's also just satisfying to find large areas to use it in. Finally, you could improve your game's movement so that just movement alone is fun. Celeste has its dash and many maneuvers which you can pull off with it. These maneuvers are tough but give you a way to try and optimize your movement so that it's fun, even without any obstacle. If there is something like this in the base movement system, it needs to be possible to do but at least somewhat difficult. Additionally, good movement needs to make a noticeable difference which makes optimal play rewarding. Be careful just moving on to making new content when your game feels stale. That may mean earlier areas aren't very fun. If playing through certain sections of your own game doesn't seem fun, that would be a good time to reevaluate them.
@Goodgis3 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. I would rather have fewer areas in the game but just make them super polished and fun. I've made too many long, boring games before and they just have no replayability.

I LOVE this project so much. Once it comes out, it'll be the game I enjoy until Silksong releases... if you'll make the game quick enough. xD But sereously I want to play this so bad! I'm patient though, take your time. I would suggest you giving some small optional challenges that lead to collectables. Even with this small game, I think you could take up a similar mind to team cherry's in that they don't stress out on every player seeing every bit of the game. Finding stuff that I know others usually wouldn't really made me feel like this is a journey of my own, a personal one. Also additional goodies could also help struggling players: Can't get trough this boss? Go around the map and get some powerups! GO GAME GO! Also your videos are pretty good in pace and building excitement. Good job!
@theothetorch80163 жыл бұрын
Also make sure to finetune the color palette! Because of your simple style, colors matter even more than usual. Good colors ARE a deciding factor in your game graphics for me, and possibly others. (I personally would change the color of the first green area and the blue bug, because I think those colors could be a lot nicer. It's only a bit of fine tuning but helps a ton. Also maybe you could give just a tad bit of blue to the background) I know that you're going for an old style look, and that old games usually didn't have tuu much colors to worked with (therefore some of their palettes is straight-up terrible), but you sometimes have to break the barrier a bit where old games failed. I'm only saying this because I want to play a nice looking game when this reliases and IMO this could help a lot. +A good look is good for marketing too. ;)

If you're looking for ideas & advice for dewdrop (which already looks soooooo cool), there are sooo many ways you can go! I'd recommend some thought experiments (some of which you've already done), such as: what "mechanics"/story/things are fun?, what are you thinking about while playing the game?, what tropes are you using in the game? (I always like messing with these tropes. It amost always comes across as fun/funny, though overall, there is a format to metroidvania games.) Yeah. Etc. You've probably already thought about these but never hurts to hear them! I love the creative process and hope your game goes well! I'll be so excited to play it!

I love how the games looking. I have an idea. Why not have fish yakuza-mobsters in the sea level and you have to kill fish samurai and gangsters. Yes its batshit-insane but can be a cool element in the game and can help in having many more funny moments

Whaaaaat, that's super out there but I like it! haha

A level that's inside another creature would be interesting, like the whale from Zelda. Game looks fun btw. :)
