A friend of mine who has been an automotive machinist for a long time was fond of collecting historical shop manuals. He said the the shop manual for the Model T told people to tighten the journal bolts and head bolts "as tight as you can." By the time the Model A came out, they had broken off enough of these bolts to change this to recommend that you tighten them "as tight as a normally strong man can with an 8 inch wrench." This advice remained more or less unchanged until torque specs were published in the mid 1950s.

160 pounds is for hitch-mounted accessories, like bike racks. It's not just a vertical load but a bending moment.
@jake_of_the_jungle9840Ай бұрын
That doesn’t make it any better. You couldn’t even put a motorcycle carrier hitch on it because every bike is over 150lbs. At least my Subaru car can do that

So you can’t hold a dirt bike in a hitch carrier like with any other truck on the market! Wow, this truck is such a huge letdown. Oh, but it can go really fast so that makes it okay!
@TheEulerIDАй бұрын
It makes no difference. It's a downward load on the hitch, and you get a bending moment whether that downward load is applied by a bike rack or a trailer. There may be some difference with dynamic loads as that bike rack is fixed whilst the trailer hitch will move, but it still doesn't sound right.
@blurglideАй бұрын

That vertical load capacity is ridiculously low. It's normally recommended to have between 5% and 15% of the load weight on the hitch, which with 10,000 pound loading capacity would be between 500 and 1,500 pound. Many would think even 5% is low. Also, the dynamics of towing means that the load will fluctuate a lot as you drive along.
