"How? You are my grandson. How can I not listen to you and be elevated by you?" When we hear leaders giving hate speech when the young are calling for unity and accountablity we know how far we have strayed from humanity. This is a beautiful interview. This is how the world should be.

This struck me as well. “You are my grandson.” It proves her earlier remark that what allowed her to do what she did, and think how she did, was love. Her capacity for loving and respecting others was so great, she couldn’t help but be the icon so many looked-and continue to look-to as a model for what their lives should be.

It was my favorite part, because it was when their opinions were diametrically opposed and there could have been somewhat of a conflict. Dave’s comedy is a lot of n word this n word that. She could have just taken the position of the great elder who can’t be questioned, but she’s wiser than that, she understood that there was truth in what Dave was saying as well, that even if they disagreed, they could both be right, and that she could learn something from him. That shows you she’s not just someone who’s revered for nothing, she’s truly a great mind.

What's very inspiring about Dave is his consciousness. He could have had a rise and fall without his control, riding the waves just to make more money until people just didn't find him funny anymore, but him simply saying he knew things weren't right when someone laughed DIFFERENTLY? I mean... this is a man that knows his craft. And when he smells BS, he knew to walk away. Not many of us can do that, and my appreciation for him grows.

As a little white girl raised from age 4 to 12 in the deep South and aware and confused by what I witnessed and heard, I appreciated so much what Maya Angelou says about anger. I went back to the South in 1963. At age 72 I still have deep anger which emerges when someone denies the experiences of history and herstory. This video is profound! It will benefit anyone who sees it. Lets show it in the schools of our country.

QJAndra How does one “atone” for mistakes? There is no way. Some words can never be atoned for. In fact, to believe that they can be atoned for is to belittle the power of words. Instead, one must change their thoughts. Words and actions will follow. All we can do is ask someone to change. Not to “rectify mistakes”, for no mistake can be fully rectified. We must instead think, speak and act in a manner in which to make the world in line with our new thought patterns.

She tells the story with no ego. Later his mother writes Angelou a letter telling her she might have saved his life. She calls him a soul mate:) Dave is deep. He is in control. For people in the comment section ... Katt Williams brought a story about Dave into world that says the following. That Dave had made the studio 500 million dollar with Chappelles show. To which the greedy bussiness men said that: 'he made too much for the contract to be valid'. So they offered him ten percent. To which Dave will have supposedly said: 'what do you think my fans are gonna say, when they hear that you offer me ten percent of what I made you'. They took it as a threat. And in reply they, figuratively speaking, said: you're fans will think that you're a crazy crack head by the time you get home. And before he got back home off the plane from Africa it was sold to all the bug news outlets. His buddy Neil(with whom he made the show): supposedly sold out to lie and keep quite about Dave. And the truth. Dave got publicly demonised, and even blacklisted. As Katt said: 'they decapitated the king in front of us'.

I think Maya was telling him she understood his struggle with fortune. People were saying "Why would you give up money? Now that screws it up for the rest of us" but Maya knew that with some people like Dave he just couldnt cross that line, if he did compromise his integrity it would have made him unhappy. So its neither here nor there. His decision worked for him and he should not have regrets. He has peace of mind regardless of popular consensus.
@TheLineCutter

+Angie L Exactly. I was figuring out what exactly she was saying at 32:57. The line was if I heared correctly: ' People will say: damn J' you're giving this up? They mean I'm not making this money, because you've given it up'. It reverses the guilt that Dave will have felt for making his decision. She puts it in the right perspective for him. Damn what a great woman. And you feel Dave his gratitude to her for saying it.

"But the thing is, you have some place where nobody...kith nor kin...can take you beyond...somewhere...in the bend of your elbow. See? Nobody." Straight up freestyled poetry in the middle of a conversation. Even the air in the room was blown away...that's why Dave couldn't speak.

I hope that you still know how "important you are". One of the things I found so life-changing about Dr. Maya's words are that they didn't just sound good, they are as applicable today as they were 6 years ago when she said them, that to me, makes them "good" I hope your days got better.

Respect, wisdom and the future come together, for a moment, and part so we all can grow stronger. We have that choice. What a grand spectacle in its simplicity. She touched much that impacted this world, and he is well on his way. Go Dave. Rest well Maya.

I absolutely loved this. The difference between hate and bitterness was real. But I'd say my favorite part about this was Dave Chappelle's face throughout the entire thing. How many times in life does one get to meet someone so meaningful to us? The look on his face each time was priceless.

What an amazing and ironically, iconic interview. Two very deep thinkers, one learning one, giving life lessons in such a short period of time that we got a chance to see. One could tell that Dave Chapelle was blessed to be in Dr Angelou’s presence. Someone who looked beyond the surface and really saw the person and who he was she called him brilliant and I suspect a lot of people only saw him as a clown. It was an amazing conversation

Dave's humility shines like never before. At some points of this broadcast, I see Dave take on a statesman like quality. And Dr. Angelou seems to communicate as if she has mastered the ability to talk with those much younger than her age at the time. R.I.P. Dr. Angelou

I get how Dave Chapelle says he's scared. He is a genius is a particular regard, and uses comedy to channel that fear, but I can only imagine how hard he would crack if he let all those fears run wild, and how he fears that sort of vulnerability.
