If I remember correctly, the actor that played him had actually read the books and offered his opinion on how certain scenes could be done. And so D&D killed him off and even laughed about it.

He was bound by his Oath's in most of those cases, not to mention Jaime and Cersei fooled EVERYONE, including her own damn children. The boar was a freak accident combined with a subtle poisoning from someone whom they believed they could trust or had no reason to suspect. Ned was not his king as he was both duty and honor bound to serve Roberts perceived heir as the Kingsguard answer ONLY to the king. Not to mention he did not recognize Stannis as his king as he believed, like A LOT of people that Joffrey was the true heir.
