@finalxhit1431 I was thinking in the sense of the high 6 figures' salaries for those higher up compared to non livable wages they try to squeeze out of vulnerable work force with disabilities and also the use by these higer up of the charity fund for their on personal uses. they justify not paying the disabled employees that make do dangerous work with no training or sometime proper equipment, but they justify paying executive at around 100k

@@Deriv44 The larger an organization/business is the higher the salary of the person at the top, no mater how unfair you think it might be. Do you really think an organization the size of Goodwill will be able to get a CEO to work for much less than 100K? Conversely, if the CEO only received 50K per year and the difference was split among all HOURLY workers (just the hourly ones) the increase would barely be noticeable. Even if that 50K was split among 100 workers that would only be a 500 dollar increase per person per year. So now you are not likely attract a person who is even adequate to the task, which will likely lead to poor management and failure of the business. And in the meantime, the hourly workers barely received any benefit from the CEO's pay cut.

Unfortunately, I am forced to disagree. It's lazy and misconstrued. Take the CEO's making all that money, for example. There are over 150 regional, autonomous Goodwill operations in North America such as Goodwill Omaha, Goodwill Orange County, etc. The figures about CEO's making almost a million or over a million dollars are not Goodwill International, the parent organization. Those are independently run. So to say that the issue wasn't resolved when the Goodwill Omaha CEO was investigated and released, is not true. It may or may not have been resolved in Omaha, where they run their own Goodwill independently.

having worked for them and fired by them over quota, I can confirm they are that greedy. Why did I miss quota? Because my bosses refused to acknowledge that like 50% of their donations were turning to trash or unusables. Instead of working that out with me, I had two bosses write me up several times and eventually fire me. They do not value quality, they just wanted a number out on the racks. And it made me even more furious when a worker next to me always passed the quotas, but only did so by putting out unsellables. I felt so used by those people... I can also confirm, yea, I'm pretty sure using the compactor didn't have much training (I didn't really receive much training at all...). It felt like an afterthought, and I'm pretty sure a young 20 year old without much thought might actually hop in it if they didn't already think twice about how compactors work...

Shorter paragraph with why the law for disabled folk is bad!! "The Commission majority approved key findings including the following: As currently utilized, the U.S. Department of Labor has repeatedly found 14(c) providers limiting people with disabilities participating in the program from realizing their full potential while allowing providers and associated businesses to profit from their labor. This limitation is contrary to 14(c)’s purpose. Persistent failures in regulation and oversight of the 14(c) program by government agencies including the Department of Labor and Department of Justice have allowed and continue to allow the program to operate without satisfying its legislative goal to meet the needs of people with disabilities to receive supports necessary to become ready for employment in the competitive economy. It is a grave disappointment to learn these dark secrets of goodwill, safe to say that despite some people who work in goodwill (the hard low workers and disabled) are amazing people.. the people sitting on the top are more busy stroking their hundred dollar bills than changing their ways, I will never donate to Goodwill again, nor will I buy from them again after seeing this.. I grew up thinking positively of good Will and despite so many amazing people that work at good will to provide for their communities, I cannot support a Organization that is organized around money, cheating, breaking laws, abusing - taking advantage of the disabled, and Hiding behind a Org to run a Corporate Monopoly . I too am a disabled worker and have experienced things like this at Pizza Ranch and a few past jobs.. It's so sickening.. and the fact that investors and Government pricks cooperate with this is just disgusting Organization.. All the more why I hate our government and why it needs to be completely abolished, demolished, and liquidated.

Goodwill Industries International was founded in 1902 by Boston, Massachusetts minister Dr. Edgar J. Helms. Helms wanted to help people in the city's inner-city who were waiting in line for food and work, so he collected used clothing and household items from wealthier areas and hired the poor to repair them. The items were then resold or given to the people who repaired them. Helms' philosophy was "a chance, not charity".

The Goodwill of Northern California, where I live was only slapped on the hand for keeping donations from people who were asked at the register to round up to the next dollar. The customer was told that it would go to one specific charity. They learned that that was not the case and this amounted to millions of dollars. I guess that’s how they decided to pay their executives. I will not donate there or shop there ever again. Plus their prices have skyrocketed. I’ve seen a price tag on an item from the original retail store that is less than the Goodwill tag on that same item. Are you kidding me?

I didn't understand non-profits until I worked for one; make no mistake, it's a private business. People should be specific in stating that they are Private Non-Profit Businesses. They are hungry for money just as much as a for profit company. The people at the top can pay themselves whatever they want. The board members are the rulers of the company. In the largest homeless non-profit, LAHSA, the CEO makes $430k per year. You have to really study where the money is going (financial docs) to understand how charitable the company really is.

I have always been against Goodwill since the first time I walked in one. Seen all the donations in there with price tags showing the absolute top dollar. Was like WTF I'll throw something away before I give it to them. I liked Salvation Army when it was around they sold their stuff very cheap and if someones house burned or something you could take a voucher in and get free furniture and shit. I'm sure they do shady things but at least they helped some.

It has been fascinating to me as an adult how much shadiness is involved with "do good" organizations like nonprofits, in part because the "cause" emotional manipulates some people to not look deeper, and in part the slippery financial practices that for-profit businesses would have to be extra skilled at slipperiness to get away with.

We allow companies and charities to get so big they inevitably become all about the bottom line feeding the top. Bigs ok but regulations are weak and not enforced. So ironic that "Goodwill" pays disabled workers so little. I know that a lot of them have government assistance for housing etc depending where you live but that is not the point. They put the same effort in and should be paid minimum wage period. That's the goodwill lacking here and with other charities. Folks work at regular jobs that are well off, have pensions, investments and they work because they want to. We wouldn't think of docking their pay. Thanks for this report. You may receive some "Badwill" about it but I am with you Sir. Cheers 🇨🇦

I haven't even watched all of this but from someone who has worked for a Non profit community/"business" for years. Goodwill is the worst of them all! How many times did Goodwill support natural disasters? Rarely, and when they do, they like to rub it in your face. "See, we helped, we are good!". However, some of the smaller local community based ones really do try and help. I only drop off the most garbage junk to Goodwill since thats all they deserve.

There are other organizations besides goodwill that have the business model of taking in used items for free and then selling them. The idea is that they "donate profits to charity", but if you read the fine print, its a very small percentage. Does it mean they are bad? Most of that stuff would just have been thrown away in any case.

There’s times at the registers they ask you IF YOU WANT TO ROUND UP!!!!! Their prices have gone way up. I have found many dollar tree items there which always have a larger price tag on them. I shop their frequently and hate it. Most of the time I just can’t stand their high prices. Every now and then I might get a deal. I also have heard many times people shopping there saying out loud that they get their stuff free and sell it for too much money….. On all these companies or whatever the higher up people get the big bucks! ziti has always been this way. Greed! I think all these big time TV PASTORS a also live high off the hog….. their million dollar mansions. Actually MANY MILLION DOLLAR MANSIONS. What is our world coming to.???? I had heard some of this talked about before but not in this much depth. I honestly can't say I'm surprised. I spent some time in service clubs and other volunteer organizations and while there definitely is good work that gets done by a lot of dedicated people, there is also a stunning amount of profiteering and other shady and downright malicious activity. When you get deep inside some of these outfits and see how they function and learn for example, what is permissible under the banner of "charity," and also why some of the individuals are there to begin with... ie to "charity wash" their reputations or spruce up their CVs, it pretty much ruins your attitude towards the entire business.

How about Volunteers of America, VoA? I'm curious to know why they gave up their thrift business and now only accept currency donations (possibly due to competition from Goodwill.) Now they're contractors/grantees for government services, and primarily serve veterans. As a veteran myself whose received services from them, I've had a look through CFR Title 38-B, which contains the regulations governing NGO's for veterans services, including providing for administrative overhead and compensation. I don't know the dollar figures of their grants, but I do know that a little donation can entitle them to a lot of matching funds from multiple grant programs, which is probably what Goodwill is doing with their paltry fraction of revenue going to 'charitable causes'.

We also hire felons. Id say 40% of our donated items are literal trash that no one would spend money. I.e. stained, broken, or just downright disgusting. The only complaint i have is that they dont provide enough gaylords or palettes for stores to funtion properly and their trainong sucks.

Please take your clothing and household items to Salt & Light or Empty Tomb instead. Those items will be sold to the public at affordable prices and the workers earn.... 15$ an hour? in the form of credits which are then used to buy items. But they can only work... 6 hours a month? Most people seem very happy with the arrangement. (The ones that don't, don't want to work anywhere.)

Used shoes n underwear for top $$$ Haven't been to most thrift stores in well over a decade. It's better to buy new these days for clothes and electronics. Unless your heart pressed for a toaster or something you may have to swing in there. Back in the '07 I bought a TV I walked in the place it was a nice Sony they had it running so everything was warmed up and it was working fine. Take it home after it's cooled down turn it on there's no picture when it heats up there was a picture but it was going in and out I got took from my money. You going there for jeans for work and you might as well buy a new pair they're trying to get 10 and $12 sometimes. And if you get scabies easily like myself don't even bother going near the furniture.

If you're going to donate, then donate to The Salvation Army. I run a nonprofit organization to help families who don't have computers. I'll receive secondhand computers or laptops that clients upgraded from, and donations front individuals. I also have no salary from doing this. They'll get them for free providing they can't afford one. The only money I collect is from e-waste of something I can't use or give. And that's extremely tedious. This and a tax deduction, which I'm okay with. Because fucking (metaphorically) the government is something I don't care about considering how often they fuck us.

I've seen items at the Good Will Store and other thrift stores near me, being sold higher than the original retail. Items originally sold at the Dollar store, for example. ( and I know, because I bought one exactly the same at the Dollar store), and they are selling such items at $3 to $4. Broken and smelly items, priced at $8 to 10 dollars. They've been overpricing things on all thrift stores since the reopening after the pandemic subsided. I like to recycle, repurpuse, and reuse. That's the reason I thrift. Not to resell. That's probably another reason the prices are getting higher every month. People buying to resell. Im sure the managers are aware of that.
