Flail mowers are great for native grass plots. They chop up last years growth and leave it spread out with no wind rows. I mow the native grass to about a four inch height each spring. I scalp my buffalo grass to the bare earth with the flail mower then use a conventional mower to remove the dead grass.. Don’t believe in a hard link for my third point, a chain works great. It controls the mowing height then will allow the mower to kick up over irregular terrain. Actually if truth be known, I do not use a hard link for any of my implements., be it a rototiller, grader scraper, planter, rake etc. I let the weight of the implement do it’s job and it is easier to change implements when the third link is a slack chain. However, this approach does not sell many quick change units.

I have found a metal rake twice now when mowing high grass with a 1025r, 60" deck. The sound is terrible, and caused things to pucker that I hadn't know about before. Thankfully I hit it them with the mower blades rather than a puncture in a back tire with liquid ballast. Lessons learned, of course, now I do a walkthrough of any high-grass before I mow. Not perfect, and do a thorough tick-check afterwards.

I have the same flail mower, and I like it. However, the owners manual states to use only SAE 140 EP gear oil, but I can't find it anywhere.
@joerudi15 Жыл бұрын
Another owner of the Funny Top mentioned SAE 140 EP on a tractor blog. I just bought a new Funny Top and the manual says 90 W. Maybe that 140 EP is a metric or Euro thing. Put 90W in there and go.

Great review. What is the maximum cut height for this flail mower? Also, did you have any issues with debris being thrown out the front of the mower? Finally, what's your opinions on this mower with the "V" blades vs the the JD belly mower? Thanks

I managed a vineyard. The owner of the vineyard had a brush hog and it didn't work well because it would slice off the top of the purnings and leave the the rest. The local tractor dealer gave me a call one day and told me had a flail mower with hammer blades. I told him I'd be right over. It sucked up the purnnings and chipped them. The people who worked for me were very happy they didn't have pick there way through the purnnings any more. It was a six foot mower behind a Massy 135 two wheel drive.

In a prior video you demonstrated the 52” Funny Top flail on the 1025r. This time you used the 62”. For those of us without dual wheels or wheel spacers, would you recommend the 52” version, or is the 62” fine with a standard 1025r?

62" is what I'll use from now on. Duals or not.

Congrats on the property! You somewhat answered this at the end, but would a “Y” flail produce a good enough cut for lawn grass assuming you didn’t care about having a golf course quality lawn? I will have 4 or so acres of lawn / land to mow and the weight, width, offset and compactness of a flail seems more attractive than a finish mower. I will not have a belly mower, but do have a rider mower for finer work if necessary.

Are you using any kind of protection under the tractor belly? Any problem with weeds wrapping around the drivetrain shaft or the 4wheel driveshaft? I’m concerned about this and I wonder if any vendors make an attachable belly pan using the auto connect.

Quick question: In a flail mower, which is better, belt driven or chain drive, or gear drive? Awesome property, looks great.
@supertramp60112 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the size of the mower, and what is being cut. I am cutting rushes with a brand new four and a half foot flail, with twin belts. The belts both snapped on day two, after picking up a rock in the flails. Also, second pass will pick up a lot of dead rushes,and this can choke the mower, causing the belts to slip. Over time, this should be less of a problem,as the cut shouldn’t be so hard, and rocks are getting cleared all the time. Lifting ,and backing up the flair usually clears any debris stuck inside of it. Generally, I am quite impressed with it for my 4 acre paddock- sure beats doing it with a brushcutter by hand!🤣

Hey, i like your videos alot! I am from germany but so far they do teach me alot about tractors and their implements. However i would like to ask for a Comparision between the Hammerblades and Y-Blades. We in germany personally run Hammerblades for all weighting 800gr per hammer, and they do fantastic against shrubs brush and also i mow the lawn with it. Thats why would find it intresting to have a direct comparison in that thick brushy stuff you mow, since i think for your new property even if it is just maintanece mowing i think the hammerblades would do better for you. So far i have only seen Y blades for golf courses where am i from, Homeowners and Farmers use Hammerblades only with great sucess, maybe your as curios as i am or you already decided on it. Hope you read this and thanks for showing all these implements and what they are capebale off and i wish you all good for your new property!
@jimmcknight30213 жыл бұрын
You might check out a channel where a guy is real big into Ventrac and he got a hold of both the hammer blades and the y blades flail mowers that Ventrac just released. True, Ventrac is a different kind of tractor, but I think the comparison would be similar on a rear flail mower on a regular compact or subcompact tractor. It would be fun though to see the comparison on his new property. It would also be fun to see some comparisons between various stump grinders versus stump bucket. I guess we're giving Courtney a lot of homework! Lol lol

Thanks a lot. Yes, I definitely have plans to do comparisons such as this in the future. Looking forward to it. Have a great day!

I used to know a guy who ran a flail mower to groom the golf course greens at a country club. He bragged about how smooth it cut when sharp, but always told me you don't want to cut woody stuff with it....looks like you're using this unit in the rough pretty affectively. Is this typically a good application for that type of mower?

@mudpuddle88053 жыл бұрын
The problem with a mower behind a tractor is the tractor tires press down the weeds so the mower misses some. An hour later, the pressed down weeds stand up again and the field looks a mess. A front mounted flail mower might be better.

Is it possible to mix both hammer and Y cutters on the flail mower? Goal is to knock out the thicker woody stuff by also give a great cut on normal grass/weeds. You'd need to keep the weight balanced so you'd need pairs of cutters on opposite sides of the drum. Perhaps a good experiment: all hammers, all Ys, mix 50/50 hammers and Ys, and mix 20/80 hammers and Ys.
@normanbanks89023 жыл бұрын
Do they make a self contained unit for an ATV/SxS? If so you need to make a video on that. I’d be really interested in one.

Running the mower in a centered position when possible also keeps the driveline straight, prolonging its life as well.
