I personally swear by Dura Tracs. I worked at Les Schwab for 15 years and have seen just about everything out there. I live in east Idaho and my main hobby is snowmobiling, but I also hunt/fish/camp/shoot...anything outdoors basically and I've never found a tire that did so much, so well. I drive an F150 and with my sled in the back, I can conquer the worst that Island Park and W. Yellowstone has to offer. Once this 3rd set wears low, I WILL BE getting this updated tire. Yes the BFG AT3 road a little better, but that's not important to me at all. What's most important to me is winter traction and the BFG as well as the Toyo's don't hold a candle to the Dura Trac's traction. The 3 sets I've had have all worn like iron, no cupping or feathering, but I probably pay more attention to my tires than your average consumer. The Baja Boss' and the Falken At3 are also strong considerations as some of my buddies swear by them (especially the Falken), but I'll be a Dura Trac guy for years to come. SO GLAD they didn't change too much of the original design!!

I’m thinking about trying the Baja boss at. It looks like it would eat the wild peaks. But considering the duratracs as well. Gonna try something other than a mud tire and hope I don’t regret it. Drive mostly on pavement unless hunting. But do drive on construction sites regularly.

Great review! One thing that's almost never mentioned is the depth of the sipes. So many tires that LOOK like they'll provide good wet and snow traction have sipes that are hardly more than cosmetic; within 5,000-10,000 miles, they've disappeared as the initial "siped" layer of each tread block wears down. There are few tires that have full-depth sipes.
@kx8960
@kx8960 Ай бұрын
EXCELLENT point. Are these sipes full depth? Does anyone know? I am debating new tires for my '24 Colorado ZR2 and thinking of the new Falken, but I might look at these too. We get snow here (I cross a 9,300ft pass to work), and I go back to CO (Durango, Front Range) to visit. I run Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires on my 2010 V6 AWD RAV4, and love them, and they have full depth sipes.
@Harry_Gersack
@Harry_Gersack 23 күн бұрын
I can guarantee you that no tire will have "full depth sipes". The deeper siped tires will have them stop ~2 or 3mm above the surface of the tire. But anyways, there is no tire manufacturer that doesn't recommend your tires having at least 4mm of tread for driving in the winter. Also you heard him talk about the connections between the tread blocks. With siping you're facing the exact same problem. Too much and too deep and your tire will wear out so fast and bad you couldn't even imagine it. Also if you're looking for tires that are really good for wet, icy, snowy and slushy roads, you should get proper, dedicated winter tires. They outperform any AT or MT in those conditions.
@klforrest573
@klforrest573 10 күн бұрын
100% - if your looking for top tier AT or Hybrid tire for Snow/Ice/Rain - (winter months) - find a tire with - Siping/micro cuts all the way down through the tread blocks. This way the tire actually performs in all 3 of these conditions - for the life of the tire - (The Way it Was intended) compared to only the first 30K miles.
@Harry_Gersack
@Harry_Gersack 10 күн бұрын
@@klforrest573 You won't find one. The last two or three millimeters are never siped. a) to give the blocks more rigidity b) to avoid the consumer using their tires until they are slicks And this is not because big corp wants you to buy new tires sooner. It's because the recommended tread depth for winter tires is 4mm. Because regardless of the siping you still need the big channels between the tread block for snow grip and to channel water away from underneath the tire.

I appreciated this video. I owned the old duratracs and found them loud but much better in snow than ko2's. However, they wore badly and cupped in around 30k. Alignment and improper rotation may have been the cause, not sure. One thing I find with these tire review videos is that people rarely mention slush, that dreaded point at which snow starts to melt due to salt. This condition is my biggest concern. Thanks for the info.. from Canada

Thanks for the video. I'll likely run some RTs on mu XJ. Ran a set of Kevlar Duratracs on my XJ 2 sets ago, (got new wheels with crappy ATs on them, but I'm too cheap to let tires go to waste) and am running Kevlar Duratracs on my 150 currently in NorCal. Really have enjoyed this tire for years on two different trucks. Finally someone else says it, the Duratrac was the OG hybrid tire. I really can't think of a time I wished I had KO2s over the duratracs, but I never had sidewall issues with these. If this newer RT tire drives better on rode, I'm sorry to make you all mad but why spend money on a KO3 and wait 5 million years for your tire size. The Duratrac RT and Falken AT4W has you covered today for less monies.

Those little "Easter Egg" mini wingfoots on the upper sidewall serve a purpose. They correspond to the location of the treadwear indicator bars in the tread pattern to see how far the tire is worn down. (Some other tires will use a triangle instead of a wingfoot.)

I look at my old mud tires on a retired 5th wheel. They were not better than my open range all terrain or my back country at2 dean tires. Grass, gravel, log roads. At2 and now 3z or 4z would be better than 100% smooth big block monster mudders. They were pitrun failures. Go all terrain to get back home with that venison safely kidderz!!!

Gave me a tough time on yansing gulch and Holy Cross in Colorado. Planning to switch to a full mud terrain in the future for the best off-road performance and then possibly switch back to the duratracs in the winter since they do so well onroad snow. Again.. I’m not buying a foreign tire from an American company that keeps sending jobs overseas. That why I buy Nitto, Toyo, or Yokohama which are foreign companies that have made the US their home, creating large numbers of US jobs and major investments into the US economic success. Yokohama makes most of its off road tires in the US. BFG (Michelin) also have invested huge amounts into the US. Goodyear will probably have no tires made in the US in 10 years.

Oh really? I only know the old ones and I'm surprised you say the new design is better in the snow. Just by looking at them my guess would've been they're not as good as the old design, in terms of offroad performance. I would've guessed the old ones are better in really deep snow and the new ones better when there's (a thinner layer of) snow on the road. Say what are your exact conditions when driving in the snow? How deep? What's underneath? And is it more powdery or sticky snow?
@cpftank09
@cpftank09 23 күн бұрын
@@Harry_Gersack in really deep fresh powdery snow like mountain trails, I’d say they are a little worse. It’s likely splitting hairs though. But the snow you run into on the road, even fresh snow, I’d say they’re as good or better. I live in NW IA so we see a good combo of powdery snow when it’s frigid out and wet snow when it’s warmer. The new RT’s seem to handle the day to day snow storms, packed snow, slush and patchy snow better. Though IMO, if the original Durtracs are significantly cheaper in the same size, I don’t know if it’s worth the extra money for the new ones? Up to you on that one.

I drive mostly highway with all 4 seasons equally shared here in the Midwest. Dont do much off road or mudding but want a capable tire still. I really like my duratracs but want to know if there is a better proven option. Love this video. Thanks for the time and effort you put into it.

So its between Duratrac RT and KO3... (For a Hilux, a fairly light vehicle, just 2,2 ton) AT3W is not sold here, and probably not AT4W, so not an option

I ran load E Duratracs in 33” on my Tacoma with a lot of extra weight from winch/plate bumper/sliders and put 90k miles on them and they had minimal wear, and were great on rocks, snow, sand and gravel. They weren’t noisy on road either. Never had so much as a flat. They still had over 50% tread remaining when I took them off. I only changed them because they were ten years old. Didn’t want to risk dry cracking on something used for towing and off roading. Replaced them with a new set of Duratracs. Then they came out with the Kevlar like 6 months later.

Same, only I’m in an FJ. 92K on mine right now and I ordered a new set a few weeks ago that’s sitting in my buddy’s shop waiting for me to put on. I loved mine, but now I’m kind of sorry I ordered those before I knew these were coming. Oh well. 🤷‍♂️

I've got load range C Duratrac OEM on a Trailboss 1500. I put that truck in a ditch full of blast rock. Got some deep gouges in one wheel. The tire was fine. I've heard the rumors about the Duratrac having a weak sidewall. I offroad a fair amount, and I've sold tires for 10 years . I've never seen a sidewall failure on a Duratrac.

A common complaint on the old ones was that the would "float"... which makes sense... they definitley tried to improve that with the new ones... still probably wont track quite as good as the Falken At4w and BFG KO3's... but those tires also aren't great for mud.

Goodyear is lazy (or resourceful) when it comes to tred design. I've notice them repurpose a few tred designs on a few different passenger car tires.

I worked for a county in a mountain town in Colorado, I maintained county vehicles, all the sheriffs department trucks and rescue trucks. We exclusively used Duratracs, they were an absolute nightmare! Constant uneven wear, constantly out of balance which made me have to rebalance every time vehicles came in for an oil change, 3K miles, ridiculous! We switched to BFG’s and all those issues went away. Stay away from Duratracs is what this professional would tell you.

Ive had 2 vehicles with duratracs and for snow abd gravel they excelled...but on the gighway they had a severe vibration on both vehicles...turns out the wiggly type of vibration was caused by the weak sidewall...u touched on it 4 a second but it was a horrible tire on the blacktop especially with weight...had to run em at max 80 pound just to keeo it on the road...i wanna know much more about the sidewall strength

Well, I don't know how those little "tread"blocks", aka ripples, are going to hold air to help throw mud. I would think that a 1/8" hole through the outside BIG tread blocks would release the mud MUCH better than those little ripples. I CAN however see how those little ridges would help in snow. //\\ by the way, I just stumbled across your channel. And I have "geeked out" on tires my entire life. I just wish I drove more, so I could buy more to experience them first hand. I actually did work selling tire in my youth. there just wasn't enough money in it to support myself very well, let alone to start a family. And having kids was extremely important to me.

BALANCING-VIBRATION Issue with current Duratracs on my ‘21 GMC AT4. A truly love/hate relationship. Love them at lower speed use, especially on gravel and snow covered roads and terrain, but absolutely hate them on the highway. I have had them rebalanced twice within the current 20k miles on them, and still get a most annoying vibration starting at about 70 mph and completely disruptive above 75 to a point where I feel there is harm being done to wheel bearings and other body/frame connections. Still can’t tell if it is just one of the four tires or more. Would really like to know if Goodyear has a customer support option where you can discuss with an actual tire engineer who can assess how much unbalancing we should be accepting with regard to a road and trail tire. i.e.- Can these newly designed tires be balanced and installed to allow smooth driving at 80-85 mph, which is pretty common now on most of the interstates. If the tires are restricted to 70 and under due to off-road design characteristics, we should know that before we buy them. And in the case of my truck, these are the original tires, so no, the issue isn’t with my truck’s wheels or suspension. (20k for mileage & never any major impact to wheels)

The old Duratrac's have been great on my Jeep XJ for about 11 years now lol and my Silverado 2500HD. I'm not sure if I'll replace them with new ones or switch to Mastercraft CXT's. We use the CXT's on some of our work pickups and they've been just as good in rain, mud and snow as the Duratracs and a good bit cheaper.

Great information. i have a set of the older duratracks that now has 45k miles and although there is still almost 50% tread depth left, the road handling and noise is now terrible. So, the questions for the new ones is, how will they hold? I see the logic behind the changes, but when it comes to the sipping, the old problems will persist as the tire wears. The sipping is only in the first 3-4/32's and after that you lose 50% or more wet and snow traction. Not really a concern on gravel and pure off-road, but you still need to get to the trails and back and road performance after 20k miles will continue to be an issue. What is the purpose of a 50k warranty in this situation? The tire is not worn in the empirical sense, but it will have lost most function at half life, and that is a serious concern for those that use it on roads for 80% or more of the time.

Alright, I just discovered this channel and I'm really glad about it. All the other offroad youtubers either recommend only the most aggressive looking mud tires or just the brand that sponsors them. As of now I've only watched this and the video about the new KO3's but I already feel confirmed in what I thought before: the gap between MT and AT is getting bigger. It seems like manufacturers are focusing more on having a quieter, longer lasting tire than on offroad performance. That hasn't bothered me that much, because I was a big fan of the Wrangler Duratracs for years. Imo they're the best tire out there. (Obviously tractor tires do better when you're mud bogging in 2m deep swamp, but you know what mean. Duratracs are doing it all, and that very good) I really really hope they keep the original ones in their program.

The old Duratracs were also great on slick rocks, the extra siping on the RT should also help a great deal more. Mud is a tricky subject, you have regular mud, then you have Red Clay, Gumbo, and other sticky mud. If the latter ones are packed well and somewhat dry to damp it is almost like slick pavement (Extra siping will help there as well) But if it's soft that is a horrible mess, which is why the old gumbo mudders, super swampers, and ground hawgs were made extra wide gaps to sling that stuff out. It would seem to me those treads would hold clay and such better and cause issues, but then again I never ran anything like that in mud at all, so I have no idea what it will do. Anymore I am more interested in foul weather traction, and having enough weight in the back of the truck where it don't get squirrelly on me in those conditions.
