Thanks Matt, I'll give it a look. Seems like it might be a good upgrade. Cell phone nav was kinda a pain on my 800 mile trip last week. I have the same issues with being able to see stuff close up with my specs on.

I happen to have a retired Android weatherproof, vibration resistant phone (Kyocera DuraForce Pro 2) and a battery tender with an SAE connector. I set up a phone mount above my TFT screen (2023 KTM Adventure), which connects to the SAE plug when riding. The mount charges the phone wirelessly through the stand (so everything is weatherproof). I can download maps to it, connect my helmet comm to it (and to my iPhone safely nestled in a chest pocket) via Bluetooth and navigate onward. This is an idea from another KZbinr which I adapted to my advantage. You can buy the phones for $90 or so, plus the bracket (Heigoal @ $33) and mount (Kaedear @ $39), on Amazon. So it''s less expensive than the OneCar Stereo unit and its ilk. In my case, I just had to buy the bracket and mount. If you don't mind the smaller screen of the cell phone, it's a very practical option.

Cell phones are great for navigation, especially with offline mapping apps. My problem with them is overheating. Direct sun torches the ones Ibhave used. It's sounds like your older phone is very robust. I need to look into it. The wireless charging is a must. I have seen a few setups. I carried a puck charger as a backup when my phone's charging port would get wet. You have it figured it.

Nice setup Matt! I got a rugged phone with a wireless charger mount in my Tuareg. Just in case you want to solve the issue with the small buttons in the screen (maybe the controller that you had is not that easy to operate), you could add the Carpe Iter Controller (just check out the compatibility with your unit). For me it was big improve since I can control everything from the controller and also it has a "rain mode" so the screen won't get activate with the rain drops. Keep uploading this kind of content!

Yeah, Carpuride sent a lot of those units out for review. They all seem very similar on functionality, just vary greatly in price. I like his channel.

I have a similar setup on my Suzuki 800DE. It is powered via the bikes usb port. I have been using “Magic Earth” and Sygic navigation apps. Both include offline maps for downloading. Previously I used my phone on a quad lock mount with the anti vibration mount. I am using that same mount for the CarPlay display.

I need to check out the navigation apps you mentioned, thanks. Smart way to mount your unit. Quadlock doesn't go to waste. USB power is so much easier.

It looks like you can set a high/low value for front and rear tire pressure which gives you a range to work with. I would be curious to see if the disconnecting was just you, I have seen this on the Apple side with devices that use wireless CarPlay as well (I have owned two different bike specific units). If I buy another one of these I really want the connection to be rock solid and not have something that disconnects/reconnects regularly (and sometimes fails to reconnect in my experience). For the mount system I am not a fan of the mechanism most of these newer units are using. I would prefer a standard 4 hole AMPS pattern vs the busy look of these extra RAM ball type bits (there are already a lot of very high quality AMPS mounts available that make for a very clean look).

@@williamb.6918 you are correct, you can set high and low pressure alarm limits for tire pressure. I am using the second device like this and disconnecting happened with the other unit as well. I need to try a different phone to see. The separate power switch made life so much better when it did disconnect. I think other signals interfere too easily causing the disconnect. I agree with you on the mounts. These seem to be designed for a handle bar and ram mount. Not the cleanest way to install.

@@advmatt I've looked at TPMs for the bike, since they are on one of my cars. But reviews commonly report various reliability problems, such as both of yours. Since I never worried about that before, check my pressures manually (just two tires and I don't have to walk around a big car!), and motorcycle tires can be ridden with lower pressures anyway, I haven't pursued TPMs for mine.
@advmatt

@@RYwoodview yeah, I ha e tried a few different ones out of curiosity. They always give me an over pressure alarm on the rear tire. I ha e to set the alarm setting close to 50psi. Not really worth in my opinion.

@@advmatt I dug up a suitable 12mm bar mount for my Maxca X6 on thingverse and I am having that 3D printed now. It should resolve the janky mount system issue. I have a wireless CarPlay adapter for the unit in our Mazda as well and it also exhibits the disconnect and disconnect/reconnect issue. It is annoying enough that we largely do not use the adapter anymore. It would be nice if these newer units retained some sort of ruggedized connector so you can hardwire to the phone (much like the Africa Twin) and then all these connectivity issues would just go away.
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 ай бұрын
@@williamb.6918 a hardwired connection would be great for these, charge the phone and acquire navigation data. Maybe some day. Having the device on a switch kept me from stopping, good thing. Let me know how your printed mount comes out.
