The problem with simply saying that Google is too big and should be broken up is that it's a simply critisim of monopoly. He didn't go further. Capitalism always deal with monopolies. Google, Amazon, and other giant corporations should either be nationalized or owned by the workers themselves, but we need to be framing the conversations in democratizing these industries. Private corporations are completely unaccountable tyrannies.

one of the most eye opening things that happened to me was when i tried to explain the tianemen square massacre. Or as the the chinese student i talked to called it, we called it the 15/04 protests. I sent them a few videos of China uncensored and she legit refused to believe it until she saw captured video. She had been taught it was simply a protest and didnt learn about the actual massacre part. After sending her a few clips and videos, her entire world shattered and she broke down crying. And questioned why the government was so brutal at the time and how she didnt learn about it. Anyway that made me realise that we all live in our own bubbles and its easy to forget that real people are affected by this propaganda and that they never learned about such events. So this just proves to me that everyone needs to interact with all sorts of people to form a good opinion on the world. Background info: I had just made a few chinese friends at my university( i go to a Russel group university (ivy league) in the UK so we have an incredibly large chinese population of students. Like half the cohort in the london universities for engineering or something ends up as chinese/indian students)

@@juliusnigelmarturillas3629 completely agree there buddy. In the uk they tend to gloss over the shit parts of the british empire at the same time not talk about some of the benefits it brought. (there is a debate to be had if it done more harm than good, i lean on the side of more harm) But i think its reached a point where people are afraid to be proud of their heritage. PS: I personally dont understand why people are even proud of other peoples achievements unless they helped in someway, but that isn't the point.

The solution won't come from governments but new firms at the frontier of technological innovation. The unfortunate irony of Silicon Valley is that its biggest successes became the monsters they set out to destroy. Apple has become "Big Blue" and Google has gone from "do no evil" to teaming up with it. History in many ways is the story of the present just with different characters. Now it is up to the upcoming generation of tech entrepreneurs to provide solutions that have protections for personal freedoms integrated in them from the outset. We also need serious (i.e. institutional) commitments to reduce the influence of profit motives on corporate decision-making. Tech companies like Google and defense companies like Lockheed produce some of the greatest inventions out there -- we should put those to good use rather than reward their application in surveillance and war.
@houseofvenusMD6 жыл бұрын
@A Artisan Humans have been inventing things long before the arrival of western liberal values. Of course they aren't necessary for technological innovation -- I never made such a claim. In the US, the most innovative people tend to be immigrants or the children of immigrants who often do not ascribe to "western liberal values" -- at least not in the way that you envision. The story of America is about people fleeing persecution only to face it here again. Once they overcome it by virtue of action they in turn persecute the next newcomers.

I'm pretty sure the only winning move is not to play. But I'm also aware that sometimes you have to humor the boss just long enough to demonstrate how wrong an idea is. A spreadsheet cell can't express a human life, but it can express the profit made by destroying a human life. This makes it very difficult for executives and coats of directors to make sound decisions. Maybe three engineers at Google were going along with a bad idea until they could find a good way to torpedo the whole thing.

Preserving what factually happened is actually quite different from denying it.
