Ive been making calls for a long time including from my mini in the UK to America all I do is link it to my phone and away I go, also speak the number into the mini and it makes the call.

Did you find that if you call a mobile it won't show your number but if you call a landline it'll recognise your number? I'm from the uk. I can call the Chinese takeaway via Google home and my correct number comes up but if I call a mobile a completely different number comes up.

I just wish all google assistant enable speakers will be able to do a call. I have a bunch of Sony LF-S50G around the house and they cannot do this. Not sure if google is the one that needs to roll out the firmware or is it Sony.

Well, when you consider that the Lenovo Smart Display can make calls, I think that means it’s more about what Sony is doing...but I’m not 100% sure

Google Duo audio calls does allow this at some level, but not standard calls. There’s more to come too, as Google’s been working on updates to allow things like this.

Automate Your Life thank you!! The mini is still not recognizing the contacts. The only way to get it to call is by giving the exact phone number. I am setting this up for my father in law. I set up my own and it works great at my house so I’m not sure what I am doing wrong with his. ??

It's possible that there are a couple of settings your father in law might not have quite right. Have you checked Personal Results? Also, if he's disabled some of the myaccount.google.com/activitycontrols settings for his account, it's possible that nothing is getting through. What are you getting for a response from the Mini?

I bought the HUB MAX for my Grandma who is in a nursing home. Do I need to get her a phone number before I can set this up? The nursing home does not have phones in the rooms. She's 98 yrs old but hears fine.

Hi JAD, you don't need a phone number to set it up for her. What you will need a number for is Google Duo Video calls!

Cool. In many countries, phone call is unlikely to be allowed in order to protect the telcos. By the way , I got a quick question. If you have several devices in your house with google assistant , when you say ‘ hey google ‘ will you activate multiple devices at once ? How do I choose which devices to activate ?

Yan Hao Chen you may need to lower your voice and talk directly at the prefer device. If you home footprint is open, your voice travels.

JustMe is right. Right now the devices choose based on an algorithm that’s based on voice volume and therefore expected vicinity. The problem with that is there are GA devices that “hear” better than others. Noise in your house can also cause one device to hear better over the other. It’s a bit of an issue that you essentially have to learn to work around.

I would say that Alexa handles this better than GH, but it’s not perfect either. I find myself muting devices if I want them to be more dummy devices.

Automate Your Life Brian I did the muted trick in a semi open floor plan, with a Echo in living room and dot 3rd gen in kitchen. To rectify muting I just named the dot computer, end of problem, except the when Tv or a IPad would call out Alexa from KZbin, lol.

Hi nice video, I'm looking for some advice it's there some kind of way to use the Google home, Amazon echo etc like a hands free for a cell phone, my mom it's an old lady (around 80 years) and has problems using cellphones we live in ecuador-south America and want her to make calls not just to an Alexa owner or Google home owner and answer them without the need to take her cell phone.. Another question it's there another product like the amazon echo connect to connect the landline(pstn) to a home assistant? Thanks for your help

Hey Juan - where you are, you’re going to have trouble using either as a phone. The fact is, neither have really opened up calling in many countries. I’d suggest a totally different service for the short term.

It's not possible for use the home or echo or the Lenovo as a Bluetooth handsfree for the phone? I use the home mini for playing music from my phone via Bluetooth pairing and it rings when i have an incoming call but nothing else ...

What you can do is look at what kind of calls you can make in the services part of the settings and then see if there are any you could get setup for her, but the base calling won’t work from Google or Amazon.

in the assistant app on my iphone, under devices, under my iphone, i have contacts turned on, but if I tell google to call any contact, it says that person isn't in my contacts. Bascally, none of my contacts from my iphone are in my google account. Does this feature not work? (If I export my iphone directory, and I ever add a number to my iphone, it won't be synced over then). Also, can I have the number for my caller ID on my nest hub, be my land line number? It seems not because I can't receive a text to confirm the number as it is a land line. Thanks for your help on this.

If you JUST did this, give a little time for synchronization! Some people have to wait up to a day, but I doubt it'll be that long. I have never tried a land line number, so I can't be much help there unfortunately. We do get the "text to landline" messages here in Canada if that occurs. Maybe you'd get that?

Hi Brian, i KNow this is an older video but i have a question about phone calls. I was told from a friend that he was able to use google mini to answer his cell phone calls, and that he gets a notification on his TV. He said if I was using google chromecast ( i do have chromecast) that it would work. he said he called Google support and they told him that he could actually get and make video calls with google mini and broadcast on his TV. I looked in my assassinat settings and I don't see any thing. Can you please help me out?

Hey Tom - this would be new to me! I can’t see any way to do that, but I’m wondering if it’s Duo Audio calls. I can receive those on most devices. If you’ve connected Duo, then maybe your Chromecast shows up under Settings -> Assistant -> Bottom of screen

The syntax is "broadcast to DEVICE_NAME" but...it's a very slow rollout and they're still in testing. So it's likely that doesn't work and just broadcasts to all devices.

Very nice, My phone was all set up, I have been using the call feature. I didn't know about the Duo, I have never used that. at all. But thanks to you I was able to check that my program was all set up properly. But i still cant get google to answer my phone call if i ask it to. ha ha ha . It actually makes a call outside of your phone being available. :) You can't call the mini with regular calls, but can now use Google Duo Audio calls.

Automate Your Life Hello there. I got the message in the part of the app where you would normally go to upload your contacts. I turned the auto upload on, and then I tapped upload it now. I don’t think that my contacts have been uploaded. It was barely two seconds later that I got the message saying that I couldn’t upload the contacts. Hey Tony - Wow! Lots of things to talk about. I’ll answer back one at a time :) 1. The other video call services. This is something google is lagging behind on. They want you to use their services first. It’s a bit of an Apple take...but I expect some additional services this year.

Yeah, and actually that’s the same answer for your music, audiobooks, etc.. Things are a bit restrictive right now. BUT With Google Assistant being more of a platform going forward, I think we will see plenty of services open up over the next year or so. It won’t be millions of skills like Amazon, but it’ll come. Google really opened up things at CES.

As for your assistant issue... That seems to be related to the device. Do you have a device address in More Settings -> Assistant -> Device Name?

At the risk of sounding Dumb Brian I have spent the last 45 minutes trying to find that Setting Dir in Assistant ! Where is the "More Settings Please ? is it in Assistant if so WHERE? iI cannot find that either in Assistant OR under the Phone Settings /google/ Another Note as well if it helps I am using a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Pro Ph, Under region in Phone settings / Additional Settings IT DOESN'T HAVE Either Australia OR in my case Western Australia I have it set to Indonesia as it is on the same time zone + 8.00 Hours But I shouldn't think that would matter as the ph as a whole is located in Western AU ( WA ) GPS PROOF) Time Zone, (+8.00) I have just set the language there IN General settings for the ph Additional Settings / Language & Input from UK English (* as it is both of our spellings*) , to American English Just in-case GHM decides to look at that I think I may have found out why the Kitchen is in America and only gave info in Americanese or Yank Speak Or MrsTrumpelese Nope that didnt work ! What I did was while trying to Find the device address I came across Language it was set to US English Now some videos ago you mentioned about continued Speak with GHM and to set it to basically All things in Google Home and Google Assistant to American English To which I did ( otherwise Continued speech wouldn't work on GHM )At the time I was a bit miffed because I like our Lady with the Australian Accent But in true geek style I did as told I do remember a few times Continued speech worked well but as in many things you tend to forget it does it, as so many life issues keep you busy as you know and if you dont use it all the time it doesn't become entrenched as a habit So I changed it back to Australian English about 40 minutes back and I went in and Ok Google Temp up came Yankese Lady telling me the present temp in F I then requested GHM assist to only give me temps in Celcius she said ok I will remember that then I asked GHM ( This is the Kitchen Speaker) temp up came ASSIST Mrs Australia in Celcius I asked the forecast C was response I asked several times Mrs Australia Answered in C I waited for 3 minutes or so and asked for temp Yankspeak lady was back !!! Sigh I wonder what would happen if you asked for temps on yours in your native Temp Mrs Canada speaking , then ask for Temps in F what you would get? ( I just spent time searching re language and countries available and came up with this support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7550584 so it should work in Australia Sorry to be a Pain Brian at least it gives you more material for more videos LOL and an idea for you if you haven't already Maybe setting up a FAQ Spread sheet or Database for yourself for other people having the same Issues now or in the future, with Keyword searching, Might be a Huge advantage for you Thanking you once again Tony the Confused !

Never a pain Tony! You do have something really strange going on there. I'd look at the region of your phone as well as the language in the phone separate from the Google Home and/or Google Assistant applications. From there, yeah..convert all your devices to English Australia and the Assistant to English Australia. Make sure the location is where you are per device. So the more settings: Go into More Settings this way: Settings Button on Home Screen -> Scroll all the way to bottom -> More Settings

Hello...really like your videos, some of the features do get here in the UK eventually but this was something I was really pleased about. Just a question..well more of a request really...is why not do a video on the actual call quality? I have a Homehub and everyone struggles to hear me when I call them...but if I call through my MacBook Pro, it’s clear. I also have this issue with the Google Home Mini’s around the house too. Hmmm...I can’t say I’ve had trouble! The one thing I’ll say is that it is bandwidth based because your network is where it goes through. Do you have a good connection or does it kind of go up and down in terms of speed?

@@AutomateYourLife Hi, no our connection is fine, we have fibre here and during the day when I make the calls in my home office 'm pretty much alone, and I have a Google Wifi point behind me. We get a consistent 40 down and 8 up. Really odd. Complaints from the other end relates to a very low volume as they say they have trouble hearing me. The device is about 40cm away from me on the desk.

Yeah, I think that'll do it to you right there. I'd try taking that out or just dialing a number locally to see if you can make a call first. You're onto the issue I think Steve.

I then select "Home" and Google says "+1234 ... is not a valid number" it seems to be taking my 'area code' stripping off the 0 and thinking its an international code, totally wrong. For example ... 01234 5678910 Google tries to call [phone] ... which is clearly wrong

Hi Regiane - You can only do this with Google Duo. You can't get standard calls to ring at this time. However, if you connect Duo and have someone call you there, you can pick the GH devices that you want to ring with Duo.

You can’t receive calls on a Google Home device. Google Duo calls can be directed, however. That’s a more complex setup though.

It's actually in the app under Settings -> More Settings -> Services -> Voice and video Calls -> Mobile Calling

It depends on the device you’re using. If android click on the account bottom right, then settings

No, that hasn't been rolled out there. However, Google Duo calls are available to most places nowadays if you're able to use that application there. Check that first.

Well, try setting the device and your settings up with English US. I think the big problem will be how you dial. Try just manually inputting the number first and it might just work. :) Get it to recognize that it can make calls. You could be ok

If you’ve just uploaded your contacts, give it a little time. A day. Then let me know if it’s still the case! Might also want to try another contact and just see if it’s one or all.
