Very nice and balanced review. Also my experience exactly. In addition to "who is this phone for"; it has such a stupid plethora of smart features any professional would love and I think that's where Google is aiming in the long run. Not just a phone with an assistant, but a phone that IS an assistant. A truly smart phone. I am already having full on conversations with my px4 on my daily walks around London, from starting calls to skipping songs and asking for directions without having to pull my hands out of my pockets. The assistant is already in a league of it's own and I can't wait for future iterations where they add more practical utility to it. This is why I purchased this phone; I am incredibly excited with regards to what Google is doing here and also a bit exasperated after watching the reviews that these software and hardware features have been all but ignored. Some of the reviewers actually came across rather ignorant and I'm really not impressed.

I think in the not so distant future, Google Assistant will be like a operating system where all the Google apps will mainly be used along with 3rd party apps. Even now GA is the single, binding agent that brings almost the entire Google ecosystem of services together seamlessly.

Not to mention one of my favorite things about the Pixel 4 is the Titan M chip that's in there for security and encryption. Especially since you can get two terabytes of Google one cloud storage and you get a free Google one VPN with it for 10 bucks a month

Dieter needs to leave the verge. He's the only one there who seems to have a mind of his own. This channel is really good too. "tech youtubers" just copy and paste their complaints. Ugghh the bezels. Like really? Do you really need a phone with no bezel? Where are you going to hold it? On the sides? Accidentally touching the screen is annoying. Ugghh No wide angle? Y'all never said shit about the wide angle until apple does it 4 years after LG. I'm not a Google fan boy by any means (I'm glad stadia is failing) but the tech space here on KZbin is getting toxic.

Having no bezel on the sides is annoying. I love the look/feel of the Samsung Galaxy phones but I found it frustrating how often things would get clicked accidentally when I was holding it one handed. For me, no bezels is a huge con.

I had an 2XL and bought a 4XL. First real day with it on Thanksgiving, in my usage 4XL is slightly less discharged at end of day than 2XL. Maybe 2 year old 2XL battery versus new 4XL battery weighs in to that.

I switched from 2XL to 4 which has a smaller battery than 4XL. I have had this phone for about a week. Based on my usage, one full charge lasts one and a half day. I don't use phone often though; mostly few phone calls, few texts on WhatsApp, several news articles and occasional videos on KZbin. I love this phone thus far because of superior camera and snappy performance.

@@TomAmeen I keep my phones for two years as well. Only time will tell if my phone battery will last 2 years. When I switched from Verizon to AT&T, the phone came free with an installment plan which is slightly higher than what I was paying to Verizon. But I can still sell my 2XL to get some extra money to cover the difference for 10 months or so. I think I would still be happy with my decision even if the battery gets terrible after 1.5 years because I love this phone and I didn't have to pay full price for it.

I'm also watching on a P4XL. FINALLY a truthful review. I cringe when I see these cookies cutter reviews. That has not been my experience AT ALL . The battery is lasting all day, the camera is AMAZING, as is the face unlock. I'm a YTTV subscriber and watching on this phone is like being there... It's crystal clear, the colors pop and not one glitch. I recommend this phone to everyone

I have an Apple iPhone 6s as my company phone. I purchased a Google Pixel 4 XL , in November 2019. I really like the Pixel. It is Fast, takes great photos, and Google assistant is fantastic. This was a spot on review. I am very pleased with my purchase. I do like the Android software . I'm still just learning all the features. Hey I'm 68 - it takes me more time . :)

I picked up a pixel 4xl about two weeks ago replacing my very old Motorola Droid turbo 2. Im very happy with it still learning everything, battery life is fine and it's incredibly fast compared to what I had and I also noticed it picks up wifi singles in break room at work better then a lot of other people's phones. Coming from the Droid turbo2 my only concern is durability. The sales lady at Verizon did tell me it's not as durable and resistant to drops as my old phone.

Totally agree with you. I also have an iPhone 11 XS Max Super BigPhone and while I love that, the Pixel 4 XL really is close up there and beats it in some areas. The only places this phone needs improving is battery life and video. The design is, I think, better than Apple's - more interesting, more playful, and more human.

As a Pixel 3XL owner. I hear you there is a lot of hate for the pixel phones. I think there are big expectations and then as you point out the hardware specs disappoint, but if you factor the software it's much better. Google needs to learn something from apple. Before the flashy new things make sure the basics work really well. My issues have always been with basics and it starts with the battery life, Bluetooth, phone calls, screen and if you can do wonders with the photos why does the video seem so blah! Another huge lesson from me is a pixel is alway better 3 months after it's launch after it gets a few updates and a $200 reduction in price. Again get the basics right at launch the market is super competitive and when people look at a phone they see the bad review at launch and that's what stays online and never do they see that most issues get fixed in a few updates so they are left with an impression of a flawed overpriced phone.

I currently have a Pixel 3a XL and I love the way my phone takes amazing pictures and videos. My main concern is photos over videos so I'm interested to know if there's more camera options for the (if I were to buy the current one) Pixel 4 XL. I know the phone I currently have is the budget version so I understand it would have less options, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm missing out on and what the new phone does have setting wise. I mostly find negative reviews or articles so I haven't found anything to honestly answer my questions without being too one sided. If anyone can share their experience with the Pixel 4 or 4 XL and if you can explain what options there are for the camera that would be great. Google has done an amazing job with their phones and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next. I agree that it would also be cool if they had a Pixel watch. :)

The Problem is the KZbin Tech Community, they do not understand the point of the phone. Google designed the Pixel 4 for the masses, a simple easy to use phone. Again for the masses there isnt a better phone atm in the Android space. The UI and camera are streamlined super easy to use, Google integration is deep and easy to understand. Most people never go into setting and will not edit their photos. 90% of consumers record video in 1080p, point and shoot thats it. Enough battery life mixed usage for the average consumer. There has been too much focus on this platform about what the phone doesnt have. Look at all the other products Google makes, home. nest etc thats the philosophy

The current phone I have is a Nexus 5X and whilst it still does what I need, I do notice apps crash a lot and it will restart occasionally. I do like the looks of the new iPhone but i'm not too fussed with apple products.

Great review of the phone 👍 My frustration with all reviews/reviewers is this "ecosystem" thing. What consumers and particularly reviews should be pitching for is consistancy around standards and features irrespective of brand. I might want to buy some airpods and use them with my pixel, or galaxy watch with an iphone. My expectation as a consumer is that I can access all functions and features in most of not all scenarios. As it's stands that is not happening. It is bad enough that we have one walled garden, to promote having another "pixel" ecosystem is unhelpful. Tech reviewers should be pushing what consumers want and expect and that is that the stuff they buy works with the other stuff they buy. I have still not forgiven the tech community for giving Apple a free pass for proprietary charging ports and locking in batteries, I know I need to let it go 🙄

I think the Pixel 4 looks aesthetically pleasing, and I like the forehead better than notch. The first two Pixels especially the first one was at the time bleeding edge specs. Had the later SD 821 chip and in 2016 4gb RAM was a lot for a phone and matched top of the line flagship alternatives. I think the battery complaint is a fair one, and most reviewers down on the Pixel aren’t comparing it to iPhone, but more so the fact that when it came out you could get a better specced Samsung or One plus for a lower price. I think that’s a fair complaint. Also Dieter’s comment about the Pixel was more for Nexus phones. Pixel was their premium high end brand. Right now it seems that Google is releasing their Nexus phones at iPhone prices. I think if the launch price was more aggressive this would be a very good proposition. But as is, you have better android alternatives

I was one of those people who didn't overreact but reacted appropriately for a $900 with 6GB ram, 2 cameras, and small battery. I switched to the OnePlus 7 Pro and it's amazing. Got it for $521 on a black Friday deal.

I was going to get this phone but dropping around 1 grand didn't feel right. I did more research and found the oneplus 7t pro to be a better route for my money. Clean, stock-like UI, fast updates, bigger battery, 5G network, more storage, more ram, better processor, and just an overall more attractive look. The warp charge has been really cool too. I'm coming from pixel 2 so the camera on the 7t pro is MUCH better but idk how it stacks against the pixel 4.

I agree, most of the reviews painting this as bad is nonsense. It's a great phone, but it could have been a better phone in a few ways. -The wide angle missing is a silly omission in 2019 for $900 -the battery life is okay, but okay doesn't cut it when the iPhone is outrunning it by a country mile for $699 -there is no reason not to have an under-display finger scanner, especially when no android apps support face unlock, for $900 -what android flagship for $900 in 2019 starts at 64gb? NONE OF THEM -video recording is subpar compared to the competition, iPhone 11 is 699 and does it far better -no headphones or dongle in the box, for $900?!!! They still need to get these fundamentals situated before they ask for 900+ dollars. It's not a bad phone, but it's a guarantee to be another sales flop. For 900 bucks they cannot compete with Apple or Samsung. It's a great phone when it goes on sale for 699. The problem is you have a high launch price, and high expectations, and they leave themselves open to scrutiny every year because they want to charge a tall price but always cut a corner and fall short. It's not a complete package. Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Note 10 Plus, those are FULL packages packed to the brim.

I'm getting a used 4xl in the next day or two to use on my Fi account, what he went over suits me fine. Right now haave a 3a which is also good. Need something that makes decent photo on my watch groups and this seem ti work, saving several hundred going used, I lowed down watching major tech reviewers, they seem to have a one track mind or getting money and stuff from major players, I admit an rearlly use it is wide angle it's a valid complaint. An optimal battery life should be at 10% by the time you have a 12 hour day and place in your charger, this is optimal for battery life and training of the cells. The battery takes time to get into a proper balanced charge hold in the cells......

You hit the nail on the head. KZbin has been flooded with bandwagon tech reviews and these reviews are for clicks and nothing more. A lot of them I have unsubscribed from because I like genuine reviews and not BS reviews. Also the Pixel 4 DOES have a wide angle lense....it's just not a Ultra wide lense. If your into recording a lot of video....this is not the phone for you as Apple still owns the phone recording arena. The Pixels video recorder is "good enough" but not the greatest

The thing I keep in mind when considering recordings and things is under what conditions am I using it for? If I'm going to take a once in a lifetime trip to the top of a mountain or attend a school play, I'm going to take my Nikon DSLR. If I'm expecting to take video of drunks tripping into the town's Santa parade or of a duck riding a cow, a cell phone's video recorder is good enough.

I've owned the Pixel 2 XL, and now a 4XL. Let me see, I've never had any batteries on my two Pixels were/are reasonable, the cameras are great, the software is amazing, the timely updates make up for the small issues most of which are fixed via updates, did I mention timely. Being a former iphone fan timely updates are important and with the Pixel you get the same timely updates. When I gave Samsung a try you couldn't get any updates in 6 months maybe, oh yeah my Note 7 fiasco, sorry guys you are HUGE whiners!!

Just got it and so far I'm loving to it. Yes, the brightness isn't great. But I'm not standing in the sun all day. The battery isn't nearly as bad as they said. Sure the 4 might have a bad battery, but the 4xl isn't that bad. Sure it's not 10 hours of screen time. But it does the job for being a phone and that's for sure. I won't be watching 5 hours of KZbin on it without a charger close by though. I love it though. The Software is cool. It's got a lot of great handy features. I won't call it a miracle. But it is very fun and easy to use and I enjoy doing anything on it.

Great review, but I disagree with something you said. In the not too distant past, everyone wanted a cell phone that could make it through the day. Now people are complaining about having 20% battery when they go to sleep? People are just looking for stuff to complain about it seems. The real complaint should be why doesn't the squeeze function work like it does on HTC devices. On HTC, the squeeze can control the flashlight, Google Assistant, camera, ect. It has MANY functional uses that the Pixel does not. And the crazy part is, Google hired the people from HTC that made that tech for HTC. The squeeze function is a legit feature to have. Again, great review.

The pixel battery gets u 15-20% till u charge it again but thus with 100% capacity... What happens when capacity drops to 95%??

My iPhone XR's battery has taken a nosedive ever since like 2019 October. Basically I end up with nearly dead or dead battery by the end of the day unless I charge it mid-day, despite it used to be top notch previously and last me 1 1/2 day. So I'm getting the Pixel 4XL, there is a $300 off discount right now for this phone and it's not like i'm downgrading in battery life. I briefly tried a pixel 3aXL last year and I kept saying that I could switch over to this, no problem. I don't like Samsung with their bloatware, I used to have Motorola phones exclusively for the clean Android OS.

I had this phone for about a week. Honestly the battery wasn’t as bad as everyone stressed it out to be. However the video quality got me to switch back. The fact that it looked like it glitched in the video. It just wasn’t for me

I feel the pixel 4, even in the bad review is still amazing, also if you think of normal users 30hz screen, and serve specs is no big deal, which this phone beats and having the newest software and a amazing camera is what truly matters. Alot of Samsung and apples newest phones are super over done, though the pixel four is a bit over priced for the feature set

Great honest review!! I completely agree with you. All the negativity towards the Google Pixel 4 is really a bit of over reaction. I just got it. So far it is great! My only complaint is the 64GB hard drive. I will test to see how long I can survive with this limited storage.

Great review, I think people were confused because considering Google makes Android, they're "expected" to have the best Android phone available. Considering all their competitors in the Android space have in screen fingerprint sensors, ultra wide angle lenses, large batteries with 40w chargers.. it just seemed to fall short on a few levels then what everyone was anticipating. For the average person its a perfectly usable phone but for people who are heavy users running out of battery and take ultra wide angle photos for their social media accounts I can see this being a huge issue. For me personally I've always been a fan of Google phones. At the beginning of this year I decided to switch over to Huawei after I found the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. After seing the images it produced, large battery with Supercharge, I couldn't resist. I can say after using it for 9 months, I won't be getting another phone until atleast late 2020 early 2021 👍🏼

Battery life is actually very good. If you really don't need it, turn off smooth display and motion sense.

Why you can leave those both on im getting 6 to 7 hrs on screen on time and I put charger once it reaches 9% or lower and battery saver at 20 %

No point in keeping stuff on when I don't need or use it. But the point is battery life is not as bad as people make it out to be. It was way over blown. 90Hz is overrated, and no one cares apart from influencers and the fan clubs. Most important is battery life and brightness. Running out of juice and not bring able to see what you are doing as the display is too dim are monumental fails and makes the user experience well below what you expect for $1000. Loads of other misses including no ultra wide or 60 fps on 4k and no front 4k, no wifi 6 or latest UFS3 or latest Gorilla Glass. Also as JerryRig shows it is cheaply made as only 64gb base and extra $100 for another 64gb is a rip off. Not sure influencers are being unbias by not mentioning many of the faults.
