I'll take this opportunity to explain jitters that people are seeing in the smartphone video (which seem to come up in really any camera test I do): I render out at 24fps but phones typically don't record at that frame rate. So my video editor needs to work on 30fps footage into a 24fps final render, and it often leads to some stutters. Rest assured the video is stable the ENTIRE time I'm viewing and editing it, and then it goes through the render and KZbin wringers and this happens... Thanks for watching!

Guys.... I for example waited for long time for a phone as Pixel 5 in such a small body. Not everybody is like me BUT I don't really want the best of the best anymore. With Pixel 5 the performance is almost high end and you get a ~6 inch phone with a 6 inch screen perfectly symetrical PLUS a clean software without all sort of crap and bloatware. I am fed up of having a brick in my pocket and a zillion unwanted apps that i can never remove from the phone.

Seriously: at least for me, its obvious the thinking behind pixel 5, and everybody in the tech industry should appreciate the fact the Google has gone a different path and differentiate them self from the million makers, in regard to pixel phones. I own two phones: a pixel 5 and a Samsung note 20 ultra 5g. Very different smartphones but both have there pros and cons( like every phone). What i realized is that Google was very, very smart in regard to the choices on Pixel 5. Its easy, simple, straightforward, very good battery, ideal size and everything is very (enough) good to me, and provides a easy and pleasure experience in a "small" form factor (it reminds me, somewhat, of another company strategies regarding some of there best selling products - the one with the bite on fruit... - ) . Is it "top of the specs chart"? no! But, somehow i have my "Top of the tops" Samsung kept for backup and use my Google Pixel 5 as a daily. Go figure! I hope the keep this strategy. Its seriously a very good and smart strategy in a world bored with the same solutions and saturated with "top of the tops" smartphone. In some way, the Pixel 5 is the SMARTphone.

I get that Google can do a lot with software, but they really, truly need to upgrade the camera hardware. I've had the Nexus 6P, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3 XL, and Pixel 4 XL. I speak from experience when I say that their software and photography is great, but the hardware definitely has limits. Software can't solve everything. New hardware is needed.

Thank you so much! Especially, more info than others on video. I think we all are already aware of Google Pixel when it comes to camera stills, but where it had always fallen short his video. And as a parent, I've leaned more into videos these last few years than pictures. Had a nephew pass from cancer and the parents had plenty of pictures but really wanted the experience of seeing and hearing their child. Changed my world! My son also play sports, so of course we care about video with that. I really think the only thing that holds back the Google Pixel for many is going to be the size and just understanding the chipset being as old as it is. We may be able to get it at affordable price and it is capable, but one more year from now, even worse two years from now, are we already frustrated with our phone? I'm down right now choosing between the Google Pixel 5 and the Samsung S20FE. Don't really want the OnePlus. Really looking for more videos comparing these two!

I appreciate the kind words -- and thanks for sharing your particular perspective! I think that the S20 FE (which I have to finish coverage of still) will have a few more options than the Pixel for motion capture, but as you said the Pixel is just on another level when it comes to stills. I'll give the Pixel 5 some credit for the stabilization modes, which could prove very useful during those sports scenarios. Maybe a Pixel 5 with a clip-on lens of some sort? Moment lenses really extend the capabilities of Pixels in particular, and I'm planning on a video for just that topic soon too :)

Ill gladly take the pixels - first to the punch updates on pure vanilla android in trade... We've become to accustomed with only seeing hardware specs side of things... Personally, I can't wait for this phone.

It's not that I think its a bad phone. It's a great phone. Its just that the new business model of "milk the cash cow" by google is a turn off. 700$ for a phone that can't afford anywhere near the tech that other companies can is just stupid. The iPhone, that is completely in house developed and made (which is MUCH more expensive to do than to just buy off the shelf parts) costs the same or just a bit more (and we aren't even talking about the discounted iphone 11 vs 4a5g). The phone doesn't cost anywhere near as much to make as previous pixel's yet costs about the same starting out. I also hate google for the one step forward, 2 steps back approach. Implement new bleeding edge tech then drop it? That isn't how apple got so good. Apple pushes the market by doing what they want, and if you don't like it, GTFO. They stick to their guns (headphone jack removal, notch, face ID, screen res/refresh, etc). I like the idea of soli, they should have stuck with it and pushed it harder. With that forehead space they could have even afforded a wide angle front facer. Again, great phone, just not worth the money. Yet pixel is the only phone I will buy (sticking to my 4). Cant stand iOS and cant stand the giant one plus phones.

I pre-ordered the 5 but after watching some reviews, I'm already regretting it and most likely going to cancel it. Like some have already said in the comments, I'm coming from my pixel 4 XL and I'm losing pixel neural core which I don't understand why they would take it out especially when it's very helpful with picture taking. I'm losing Soli Radar and face unlock which I really enjoy, squeeze for assistant, better processor, and a smaller screen which really bothers me bc I've always had the XL variant and idk why they skimped this year. I don't see where the upgrade is for me at least. I don't really need Ultra Wide camera which isn't even as good as others who offer a 127° field of view, Google opted for only 107° 🙄🤦🏼. Also the disappointing speaker under the screen which makes the sound, sound like SHIT!! Cater to people who want a symmetrical screen and we lose an actual speaker 🤦🏼 Hopefully Pixel 6 draws me Back!

Can’t wait to get mine. Unfortunately, I have to wait until the 29th here in the US. But why are so many people in love with 4K on a smart phone? Most people record videos for social media or send them to friends and family, which it’s scaled down anyway. Even on whatsapp. Unless you’re using your phone for some serious pro recording, but with only 128g of storage, which is actually about 121g, you will use up your space rather quickly.

Nothing drastic, but that's to say they're about as good as ever. I generally enjoy what Google's processing does and am usually pretty happy with the results.

Almost no video in wide mode and the brief shot with the pumpkins showed some jittery movement with no comment. And why are the still cropped away from their natural aspect ratio and filled with black borders? Why no comment about the pretty much unusable image quality video in lock mode? The stills look great, but really no comparison to previous pixels. Is it the same quality? The wide lens has more pixels (16MP) is it better quality than the 1x or 2x? The 2x seemed to have significantly lower quality. Is that true? or just artifacts of the particular shots?

Got my pixel 5 day of release here in UK couldn't get the sorta sage so had to settle with black but an absolutely brilliant all rounder does everything amazing you wouldn't tell it had a midrange chipset the thing fly's with the bonus of wireless charging and waterproofing Google got it spot on this time. Would of liked a slightly bigger screen apart from that it's perfect

Awesome software by Google but that can't fix video capture. The video quality is around the quality typical of 1/2.5" sensors like the one in my S8+

Good review of Pixel 5 camera capabilities. I found the video shot quality not the best. Especially using the digital zoom feature. When used, you can see graininess and digital artifacts even at 2x zoom. I would say better not to use the zoom feature. The pan shot feature is nice to have as is the Lock on subject feature. Still snap shot scenes are excellent using wide or portrait mode. Night mode feature is excellent as is the ability to add light to photos that came out dark. What about the sound on the phone? Many other Vloggers have complained about the poor sound quality from Pixel 5 speakers because of the one speaker buried behind the glass screen.

I'm changing from my oneplus Nord (had a 6 previously) because I want the camera! I hope it gets even better with updates but I realize that I want the best quality photos, not just great ones. The Nord camera is a bit disappointing. The rest was ok.
