Keep in mind that brightness of each pixel makes a difference on OLED displays. So brighter wallpapers will drain the battery faster than darker ones. Also max brightness is of course not always needed in reality. I expect that your orange-white wallpaper on Pixel 9 causes higher power consumption compared to the half-dark-blue wallpaper on Pixel 7 and therefore I guess the battery improvement is even bigger in everyday use.

Problem here is that the max brightness is so different between these phones that the poor 9 and 8 are using a huge amount just to power the screen.

Do the older pixels have a brand new battery? If not then this comparison is inaccurate. Those old pixels probably already degraded by a few percent and the pixel 9 is still at 100% capacity
