I've heard another thing not mentioned in this video that contributes hugely to Google's failures with social media apps. A social media app isn't just an app, it's a service, and services require continuous maintenance. Apparently, if you work at Google, you'll get promoted for creating successful software, but you won't get any rewards for maintaining it. As a result, ambitious youngsters in the company will create innovative pieces of software, get promoted to a higher pay grade, move on to bigger projects, and abandon their software. This leads to orphaned app after orphaned app. If Google doesn't fix their company structure and culture, they will continue to fail in this way.

2 years later... TechAltar: Why Google failed at having game streaming services?
@raphmateus5 жыл бұрын
I believe it will succeed there. There is no widespread competitor to the upcoming Stadia. So if they pair Stadia (cloud gaming) with decent game streaming tools, they just win the market over from twitch etc.
@pbilk5 жыл бұрын
@@raphmateus Uh, yes there is, in someways Microsoft's xCloud service. Stream games to any device. Even PlayStation Now is another competitor. Both of these have been announced either early 2019 or earlier.
@raphmateus5 жыл бұрын
@@pbilk Those exist that is true. But none are as seamless as how Stadia looked during the presentation. Let's see when it actually rolls out into our hands. I think Stadia will be decent, and in the end it will depend as well on how good Google is at making deals. Exclusivity deals and games can win over people if done correctly. Stadia will be free (apparently) and you only need to purchase the game... If the only thing you need to start using Stadia is purchasing that exclusive game and you can still play on your favorite machine (ex: laptop). You'll be a Stadia client in no time. It will all depend if we can import games we already own from PS store, Steam etc. Or if we have to buy the title again. I have no idea about that
@MirthandirRose5 жыл бұрын
Reading this comment after Stadia has already had its shitshow release is cathartic
@raphmateus5 жыл бұрын
@@MirthandirRose Stadia has released for pre-orders by people who can't even do a serious review. Wait for worldwide review. I don't care about a review saying their game lags when their connection is all over the place. Or people bitching about input latency on a first person shooter. Stadia is not for that right now. The only very few reviews of open world games and slow paced games came out mostly positive. And guess what, those are the games you can barely run on your current hardware. You need a 2080ti to run RDR2 smoothly at 4K60fps on max settings on a local system. With Stadia and a good connection you can run it on your PC, or 1080p/2k on your pixel phone or any rooted phone. Most are complaining without even thinking about what it really is. But people do that all the time. So your comment is even more petty.... I'm almost certain you don't even own Stadia Pre-order edition. :) For a person who has no console/gaming PC and has access to good internet. A decent gaming PC is quite expensive, the new gen consoles won't retail for 300$ :) probably the double of that. And they can use Stadia and purchase one, two games for 60-100$ and start playing at 1080p. Or get the subscription like you do already with PS plus, and you can stream 4K. The cost of entry is low, that's it. I already own a PC and console. Why would I waste my time bashing Stadia. It's not supposed to replace my current equipment. When I will face the choice between a new graphics card or console and Stadia... I will look at the games I want to play and see how they do in Stadia. If it's a First person shooter, I will not choose Stadia. If it's a demanding open world slow paced game. Stadia will be a good option. But remember. I can simply purchase one game to test it. I am not saying everyone should go ahead and purchase 10 games for stadia. At the end of the day, it depends what type of gamers you are. I am seeing a bunch of hardcore gamers complaining about Stadia when Stadia is a service for casual gamers. And understand that game purchases revenue is achieved with casual gamers while micro transactions revenue is achieved thanks to hardcore gamers. Stadia is only earning for the subscription and perhaps a part from the game purchase. It does not rely on hardcore gamers.

They aren't actively blocking Edge from accessing services - it's been said they just have an "allow" list that they haven't updated yet. At least Google doesn't have control over the entire internet, but it's insane how they're tricking people into thinking that Firefox and Edge are slow by crippling their speeds. I find it sad that they've forced Edge to surrender and become yet another Chromium browser thanks to these anti-competitive tricks.

When you've mentioned Google focussing on business oriented apps, my mind jumped straight to project management. So far, G-Suite and Google Drive overall lacks a seamless project management experience from my use with these services. Other than making spreadsheets and group email listings, there's not much you can do that offers an experience like other project management services like Monday.com or Trello. I'm making do with Google Drive, Notion, OpenProject and Wave as my apps of choice for project management and self-accounting but it would be nice if Google had better proprietary apps that intergrate with Google Calendar, Docs, Drive, etc.

Well as a more personal experience reason why I didn't use hangouts is that it was a little basic/bare bones compared to some other solutions, it didn't seem to always work right such as sometimes not receiving a notification on a new message, even worse yet is they had no dedicated desktop app as they wanted it to run purely as a web app in your browser and as you mentioned they like to quickly kill off things that don't get their desired level of attention which is always rather annoying when you find a piece of software you do like, so no thanks google I'll stick with what's already good like discord or something free/open source that can't just be killed off.

Google was actually in the messaging game much much earlier with gChat which has always been built into Gmail, as a standalone online messenger, and available on the very first Android phones. This same product has been simply rebranded and evolved into Hangouts today. No idea why Google tried experimenting with so many different chat app concepts though, just confusing the user base.

I have never had issues with notifications but I know ppl who have. Otherwise it is pretty basic...looks like an app from 5 years ago. But I do think there are companies using it. My brothers whole company ...quite large ...uses g suite and Hangouts extensively. Leaves much to be desired tho.
@Thewinner3125 жыл бұрын
@@2hedz77 Quite the contrary, I don't know of a chat product that is as advanced as hangouts. Let me explain. Where Hangouts really shines is integration. You have it in Gmail, so you don't need an extra window/application for chat. But more importantly it is integrated with calendar. Every event in your calendar automatically has a hangouts meeting. So there is no struggle, of who starts a video call, then invites everyone, etc. Every meeting automatically has one. It gets even better, because there is also meeting room hardware that lets you hook up TVs in meeting rooms to G-Suite. When you book a meeting room for a calendar event, the TV in that room is automatically aware of the hangouts call for that meeting, so you when you get to the meeting room you only need to click one button and you automatically have the correct video call running on that screen. No laptops required, but you can just use the link in the calendar to share your laptop screen into that meeting. I currently don't know of any competitor who has such features, especially if you are already using G-Suite anyway.

Also, OEMs will bundle their own chat (SMS) app with their Android devices which could confuse and/or annoy users making the adoption of Google's own app even less. I'm not sure if this has changed but that has been my experience.
