It's not an either/or. You can allow for ad blocking and still disallow running remote code. When you submit an extension, you have to mark whether or not you use remote code in your extension. If you don't mark it as such and submit it when it does use remote and/or if you embed foreign libraries that includes interpreters and/or has encoded/binary blocks inside, the store will reject your extension.

I managed to close the tab after trying multiple times to click out, cleaned everything and it seems to work perfectly fine. @@zomboids2100 don't forget the trackers, they are just as malicious as the ads. i have been using the brave browser for roughly 5 years straight because it blocked both ads and trackers and it was getting continued support. but it sounds like something is going to happen to brave since i know they use chrome, but they also have the continued support, so they probably only see this as a roadblock and have already prepared themselves for something better, maybe they fully make their own browser that doesn't require chrome like firefox, these guys are always improving shit which is why ii use them, meaning they always update the way it works, i have seen a few times where google did an update where some ads bled through and shortly after they release an update that goes back to normal in blocking the ads and trackers. so brave follow very closely with the trends on the browser they use, and they probably already know about this and are probably already working on something to mitigate the issues, i suppose only time will tell.
@RandomGirl1192 жыл бұрын
A major reason why I started using adblockers was because, back in the day, I kept running into ads that would redirect me to another page as soon as they loaded, and that page would pop up a prompt that was like "We've detected a virus on your computer! Click OK to clean it!" or something like that, and no matter what you clicked on that prompt, it would start downloading a virus. But of course, you couldn't click anything else in the browser because the prompt would just flash at you and make the "No" noise, so I had to End Task the entire browser to avoid the virus. And of course, when a browser closes unexpectedly, it reopens _all_ of the tabs you had open, so I would have to reopen my browser, quickly close it in its entirety again, and then reopen it once again to fully escape. It's not that hard to program your browser ask _which_ tabs you want to reopen because maybe there's a _reason_ the browser crashed or ended unexpectedly.

Altough project management keeps requesting ads with autoplaying content and shit. Blocking ads solves a problem, it is NOT and never was the problem. As long ads abuse interactions on a site to bypass a browsers popup blocking, freeze entire browsers and force users to click on them, blocking ads is the most justifiable thing an internet user can do. Ad blocker or not, people won't be able to absorb so many ads and their revenue is gonna drop either way. The market will balance itself out either way. Either they show fewer ads, charge companies more for impressions and then if the company can't afford it, it goes under, or they bombard users with tons of ads, charge the company less for impressions and then the company doesn't get its money's worth because the users don't actually buy their product when they see an ad because their attention is saturated, and the company goes under.

As you said, for development it's also the same, I never had any major issues, maybe some small differences on how 'inspecting' works, but it's all very minor. I was also using Firefox on Andorid, since it has Ublock there as well, which is a huge advantage to have on a smartphone IMO.. However, since I switched to an iPhone for the first time, I found out that there are no extensions on Firefox on iOS due to, of course, some Apple shenanigans. So I tried Safari with some, probably very popular, iOS app/adblocker and it actually works. I get that it's kinda annoying to switch to a different browser and it's ecosystem, but it's really not thaat big of a deal. Let's be honest here, I am entirely fine with ads if it was in any reasonable quantity. One add on the corner here, a 5/10 second ad on KZbin at the start of a video? Yeah sure why not. I understand that at the end of the day free services have to be paid somehow... But it's just excessive. Excessive AND a self harm to the sites. Not just because it drives users away, but because ad space is affected by supply and demand like absolutely fucking everything in life. Demand for ads on the user side is nonexistent, so you shove it in their face. However advertisers DO have a interest in having ads shown and so they pay you to do that. Now the problem comes because the MBA graduates that run these companies just care about quarterly growth numbers figure "hey they pay us by exposition, so if we expose the products more, they pay us more!" But what ends up happening is that you just increase the amount of views across the board, which means for the same amount of exposure, those companies won't have to buy as much and therefore the demand for your ad space falls. If demand falls and supply rises, then the price they are willing to place forward falls too. This then makes the MBA retards go "well fuck, we are not growing revenue. Well I know what is going to boost the numbers, shove in more ads!" And that's how we went form little skiable bars to skip able ads, to unskipable ads, to mid video ads... And if rumors are to be believed, them changing to add up to 10 potentially unskippable ads in a row.

I feel it needs to be pointed out that other browsers can continue to support Manifest v2-based extensions. Just because Google is removing it from Chrome doesn't mean that Chromium-based projects have to follow along with that decision. They can continue to support it in their own code bases. It will be more work to do so but the beauty of version control software is that Google can't just delete Manifest v2 support in such a way that developers can no longer go back to earlier versions to pull that code forward. If they did they'd be raising a lot of eyebrows and questions that they don't want to answer.

I've said this before on other videos that talk about the need for adblockers - Running ads is an old and outdated model. It's stupid that we waste people's time and we make money from it (mainly because I pay, say Google, to run ads for my product... that's how the money is made). They need to find a new way to advertising things without making the web just an endless slew of unblockable, unskippable, forever in your face ads when all you wanted to know is "best build for Janna Support". It's made even more apparent how stupid ads are when you go to websites that tell you that you literally can't use their site because of your adblocker. Make an account, pay some subscription fee or other excuse for you to stop using your adblocker. We use them because we a) value our time more than whatever you want to show us that isn't relevant to the reason I'm using your service and b) want our sites to load as fast as possible for the data we care about instead of, for some reason, loading all the ads first and then it takes forever for the content itself to app. Note for Google and other companies out there who think what they're doing with ads is ok - We come to use that service to use that service. Not to be sold something that doesn't even relate to the reason we're using that service. Think of it this way - When you go to a mall, do you want to constantly be bombarded to visit different stores while you're in one store? Let's say you walk into Sephora and the whole time you're in there, there's a guy who is constantly asking you to visit GameStop and buy some new game that they just got in. Like who fucking cares? I'm in Sephora for a reason and that reason doesn't include having GameStop bullshit shoved down my throat. I get it's how people make money, but in a world where every service "wants as much as your time as they can get", using ads ain't it. If you use ads, you're actually getting less of our time, not more. Because we spend less time doing the thing we want to be doing and more time trying to navigate around the absurd amount of ads. This also goes for services like Amazon Prime and Netflix - we just want to watch a movie/tv show. Why the fuck you got to do us dirty by telling us "streaming won't be like the old days of watching commercials" when it totally is like the old days and we get just as many, if not more, than we used to? You think we don't notice, but we do. And even worse, you don't even make them skippable.
@Larkian2 жыл бұрын
The original film streaming platforms literally did a 360º and is just a TV service in your PC or smart-tv. Like it was supposed to replace the use of buy/rent cassettes/dvd/blu-ray so you got it on demand when you wanted to see it and not even buy a TV service provider for the private channels (Stars, HBO, etc), buy specific channels for movies and other things and avoid literally the advertising space between tv shows. When netflix became popular companies copied their business and practices model and started to separate content with exclusivity per streaming platform instead of tv channels back then and at least it was ad-free. And at least for now only netflix wants to put a lower tier subscription to run ads between shows/flims? Like the whole purpose of streaming services was to have all films and shows you wanted to watch in one place. Now if you want that in the legal way you need to buy 3+ streaming services and is like literally having TV cable again but without ads (for now) and you select what you want to watch.

My perspective on the comment around 3:45 in the video; Firefox adheres more closely to the official specification for website functionality and capability, that has always been Firefox's goal and it succeeds very well. As web developers, we ideally would like all browsers to do this, and it's really not a big ask; "Hey, you make X machine. You're also a member and subscriber to Y non-profit who set the standards and rules for X machines. Can you make your X machine follow the standards and rules set out by Y non-profit?" Apparently this request is unreasonable when you're asking Google or Apple to make a browser which meets the World Wide Web Consortium's and ECMA TC39's official web technology standards. But Mozilla, ever vigilant, have made a browser which consistently conforms to the official specification. The reason that some websites don't work on Firefox is because the developers have built it while using Chrome/Safari and have only used the non-standard properties added by those browsers, not using the actual properties. Imagine you make a tape measure that's intended for measuring in metric. But you only label feet and inches. This is exactly what many developers do, they build websites with technology not officially recognised as technology for building websites.

As a web dev, if you want to do a _proper_ job you need to test not only in desktop Chrome, but also desktop Edge, desktop Firefox, desktop Opera, they're mobile counterparts, and good luck testing in the macOS-exclusive Safari if you don't own a MacBook And since not all browsers support the same features in terms of their JS/CSS engines, get ready for mind-bending browser inconsistencies and having spaghetti code all over just to support edge-cases Oh and if you want higher rankings on Google and maybe Bing if you consider it important, you better off investing time and effort in reducing the initial load time Oh, and you should also keep in mind that approximately 15% of your users cannot see your website, so you should have a proper accessibility support Being a web dev isn't easy if you want to do it right

In an ideal world, web devs wouldn't have to test on multiple browsers. In an ideal world, all browsers would implement the HTML standard completely and on-spec, so that if your site renders correctly on one browser, it renders correctly on all of them. You know? The whole point we even have the W3C HTML standard in the first place?

I swear, "security and privacy" is Google's favorite excuse for every single one of their controversial and/or questionable decisions. Just to remind - they blocked call recording on one of the recent Android versions "becuz secuhrityandprivacy!!!". I repeat - in order to increase security, they made a change which severely reduces security. Logic. Thank you very much, you've convinced me to switch to Firefox - downloading as of writing this. I've been considering to ditch Brave after a pile of annoyances it bothered me with, but this is a straw that broke the camel's back. I've actually used Firefox ages ago, but I've switched to Chrome, thinking it was superior and more "modern". I'm happy to have a reason to go back to the ol buddy fox.

Ive always used Firefox ever since I was a kid and got my first laptop and I've always been so surprised it's such an unpopular browser. So many of my friends use Chrome, this will probably get them to switch. But in general I never really understood in life why everyone used Chrome since I always felt like the layout was less comfortable and intuitive, whereas Firefox always gave me all the tools I needed at the time easily.

Google can try and circumvent ad blocker in any way it wants but it isn’t getting around the network-level blocks that you can have with dedicated firewalls or something as simple as a Pi-Hole. Besides Google can only get away with so much of this Ad-Block subversion before they potentially violate CIPA Laws due to how prevalent they are in school districts and because of just how awful some of the content for ads can get
@svenhoff26532 жыл бұрын
I wanted to set up Pi-Hole for years. Had already my shopping cart completed, when i read that the blocking lists are no longer updated as often as in the beginning of the project. But i think i really have to have a look at it again. I use chrome and Firefox side by side for years. Some things (specific apps) work better on chrome other better on firefox). But without any kind of addblocking browsing is not possible today. You will have a seizure after a short amount of time.

@@svenhoff2653 it still works pretty well tbh. If you’re technical enough you can always setup a home brew DNS server that also pulls some forwarders from big anti-ad public DNS servers

I use TorGuard and they provide adblocking DNS, I think you don't even need VPN for that, anyone can use those adblocking DNS servers. I used to use openDNS, which I still have it set in my router, but I think I need to start using adblocking DNS globally (set it in my router). Reason why VPN is better, is because you can have browser add-on for it, so only your browser goes thru the VPN and therefore has built-in adblock.
@Katie-hb8iq2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, it wouldn't surprise me at all that the most popular adblockers aren't already working on v3 implementations for their extensions as we speak. I don't think we're going to be in a situation without adblockers for a year or something. Because this is such a disaster, people are working on it out of rational self-interest.

I've been using Firefox since 2005 and the number of websites that don't work well on it is pretty small. Nearly every time they've done something I dislike (like changing the interface) I've found ways of reverting it back to how it was before. More market share for Firefox could be a great thing for its users. The bigger problem is that Google knows it can get away with it since, at the end of the day, most people don't use ad blockers to begin with. We all know people like that, maybe an older relative or a coworker who always use the default settings for everything, including browsers. They won't notice a difference and will continue to use Chrome regardless.

Don't even need to be old clueless people. I have a young zoomer cousin(14 years old) who really doesn't understand how adblocks work, and just have everything in default in his browser. He was so used to just being handled a computer or tablet to him by his parents and everything being automatic that he doesn't even know you can modify browsers and use add-ons, he basically thinks internet and technology is literal magic. mf doesn't even know how to use privacy mode and deletes his history one by one when he watch porn lol

I've used Firefox since I was a kid, with intermittent swaps to Chrome in my teens. I recently tried out Opera GX for a few months since it looked interesting but they force their own ads regularly, and they're Chromium based. The only times I ever have issues with Firefox "not working" is rarely when there's an interactable program or form in a website. It's never been a big deal to save and quit/log out, open it back up in Microsoft's browser and finish the thing I was doing. The same thing has happened when using Safari, Chrome and Explorer/Edge, and I've also had times where Firefox worked in place of other options. I've never found it to be a big deal, to the extent where, when I first started writing a reply, I was going to say that I've never had issues with Firefox working. So technically I guess that's not quite true, but for me, it doesn't come up any more or less than other browsers.

Which I paste into a file and put in a folder where I never, ever look at it again. Kinda like hoarding, I guess, but much less harmful. I had a cousin who, when he died, was found to have been saving newspapers for untold years. Hip-deep piles. You can't get hip-deep in pixels. And even though I know I'll never look at those files again, I just can't help myself.
