Loving the in depth walkthrough, I'd built a half delete a few years ago and just got another Tacoma. Now thinking about doing the whole thing! You don't happen to have a diagram of measurements do you?

This video was exactly what I was looking for, and well done! I just finished mine, and a couple of adjustments I made too: 1.) Instead of bolting the board to the frame for the T bolts, I just screwed the board into the platform so it raises with the frame but doesn't allow shifting while moving - I couldn't find 7/16" screws long enough anywhere around me to mount it into the frame 2.) I used U-bolts in the platform to allow a way to attach ratchet straps to the cooler so it stays in place, and when there isn't force they drop down to near flush with the platform 3.) Applied outdoor carpet to it to help keep things from sliding and better traction for my pupper. Seriously awesome video!! Love the fly rod space! I tuck my little guy into the space between the back storage and the wall (I only did the platform, not the backing). Thanks!

@@TravelingbyTacoma finalized my design today, slight variation on yours, going to go vertical from the floor up to where the cubbies start to slant back with a couple hinges to give me that extra inch or two of platform space, and going to try to use a T-nut and star-knob to achieve securing the upper section of the wall panel to quickly be able to flip it down to access the cubbies since I don't plan to cut out the holes like you did. Rad, how'd it turn out? I have a battery in my camper (Redodo 100AH) there is a discount code in some of my camper build videos you can use, ( TBT3) for a slight discount. If I didn't have that battery I would probably use a PowerStation like (Jackery, Blueutti that has enough AH to run your fridge. I run the frisdge off my truck (Cigerete lighter port when driving to save battery and our camper battery when camping and keep it topped off with a 100w solar panel.

It would be cool to do, but I would basically have to quit my real job and make this a business. There is a lot involved in that. Thoroughly enjoyed the build. It looks great and is functional except the 3 screws holding the base to the back. I would have done something quick release like pressure pins or spring clips. Just for quick access to the bottom containers. I keep recovery gear in those bins as well as trailer hitch and other gear I need quickly.
@TravelingbyTacoma
@TravelingbyTacoma 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. The main reason I chose to use the 3 Allen screws was safety. I wanted the entire rear seat delete to be as secure as possible in a worst case scenario IE car accident. I didn't want anything on the rear deck to flip forward in that situation. Also I figured in a recovery situation ( I keep my recovery gear under there too ) taking those 3 bolts out only adds a few minutes at most and slowing down in a recovery situation is a good thing. Stay safe out there TbT.

looking to do a 60% delete on my rear seat.. I want to put my fridge (iceco VL60DZ) in the rear seat, and gain some more functional storage. folding the seats flat the fridge sits too high (doors wont open fully, and there is no-where to tie it down. this platform should solve most all of my problems and gain more storage room in the bed of the truck as well as keep my fridge free of dust, (cleaning the condenser and fan is a PITA).. its usaully only me and my wife that go on these trips. but a 3rd seat is always good to have should our daughter decide to join us.
@TravelingbyTacoma
@TravelingbyTacoma Жыл бұрын
Excellent. I think you'll be happy with having it in the truck. My RSD is still going strong and its so much more functional as a platform than seats like you said. Maybe make a 2 piece platform/back that you can pull the 40% side out and put the seat back in when needed or vice versa. Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting. TbT

U need to split the board same as the seats. So u can lift up..passenger and driverside.. to get to your cubbies. I'm glad u didn't go past the footwell. Like most do can't slide your seat back..otherwise cool build. Take out the passenger seat. And do a full board to the back probably sleep like a single bed. If you need it. But I would get a topper 5 foot rooftop tent 6.foot sleep I'm the back. Than nice to store half your gear behind the seat..and in your bed..squeeze loads of space out a midsized truck. Almost just buy a 4 runner. Lay the back seats down. And roof top cargo basket..my tacoma is ..tricked. to the max. Smart idea..

Awesome video and inspiration for a similar project I'm considering. Do you happen to know if this also warranted a weight savings and how much you saved? Or what your seats weigh compared to the build? I'm hoping that mine will also mean even just a bit of weight saved for the rest of my gear!
@TravelingbyTacoma
@TravelingbyTacoma 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t have any exact saving numbers, but it is for sure less weight than the seats. It also allows gear to be moved into the cab that would have been in the bed and distributes the load weight better for sure. If I had to guess... it is at least a 30-40 pound of weight savings by removing all 4 rear seat pieces and only adding some plywood and carpet. Good luck, thanks for watching and let me know if you have more questions. Stay safe out there. TbT.

A really good video! I have been wanting to do this same mod. I bought the plywood and have both pieces cut per your dimensions. A have a few questions for you that would really help me. I see where to trim or taper the back piece on the left. And where I need to notch on the lower right to attach the bolt. Could you please give me the measurements for each storage openings? It looks like they are slightly smaller than the actual opening. Also I assume that the back mounting board is a 1x4 that goes fully across the bottom. Then you have a 2x4 that is the front bottom to attach the bottom. Is that right? I will need to figure out how you attached both pieces that basically make a bottom “ tee”. I will just have to lay it out to understand how you screwed them all together I guess. I really appreciate your help and again thank you so much for a very good video! Thanks.
@TravelingbyTacoma
@TravelingbyTacoma 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I made the openings 15 wide X 9 tall. The passenger side (factory cubby) is bigger, that allows me to stuff things back behind the overlapping back panel on that side if that makes sense. The bottom base part is a piece of 1x 4 poplar cut down to 2.5” with the angle matching the angle of the back cubby panel and a piece of dug fir 2x4 (platform base) all glued and screwed together. Make the mounting holes (the ones that I bolted the back panel/base to the existing seat/floor screw holes) big enough so you can move the back panel marking a bit to line up the bolts and use fender washers to cover the bigger hole. Makes it much easier to line up the back panel when bolting down. Hope that answers/helps you a bit. Feel free to modify or improve my design of course. Good luck and let me know if you have any more question. TbT.
@TravelingbyTacoma
@TravelingbyTacoma 3 жыл бұрын
...yes it goes all the way access so you can use the seat mounting bolt holes on each side (and the middle where I had to make the notch). Made it just wide enough to get a bolt and fender washer on it. About as for out as the seatbelt bracket on the floor of the truck. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks. The base is 19” X 48” and the back panel is 25.5” H X 52.5” W at the top (widest part) it tapers down narrower at the bottom to allow access to the mounting bolts (seat mount locations) and some more side storage. Hopefully you can see most of that in the video and use it to inspire your build. I do not have angles, I just matched the angle of the factory cubby. Thanks for watching. TbT.

@TravelingbyTacoma
@TravelingbyTacoma Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly the back support with the angle ripped on it is about 49.5” wide. I can’t remember the mid supports sizes. I think the deck is 11/32 ply. But anything light but stiff would be good. Just don’t want to add any unnecessary weight, but you don’t want it to be flexy obviously. Good luck 🤙🏼

@TravelingbyTacoma
@TravelingbyTacoma 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can do either one. I’d make your platform on the passenger side (limits you to 3 people) but it’s more bang for your buck. Ice chest or fridge would fit on it. Also it will only take you about 15 minutes (once you’ve pulled the seat out and put them back a few time) to re-install your seat if you want it back in. You could take out either seat and the plastic cubby and build a one piece platform with a 90 degree back- that would give you a lot more room and may be an easier in and out install. Good luck.
