Ben from GooseFeet Gear made me a down jacket with some of his new 8D material to try out on my JMT hike, which is just around the corner! Check out this video for my initial impressions on this material, as well as the jacket itself, and even a light comparison to my older GooseFeet Gear Down Anorak. Then be sure to head over to GooseFeet Gear and see about getting your own downy needs filled for your own hike! goosefeetgear....
Disclaimer: Ben from GooseFeet Gear sent this jacket to me at no cost, in exchange for feedback on how this new material holds up after a bit of hiking. I have no obligation to tell anyone else about this jacket, however, in my opinion, his jackets are some of the best on the market, so I want to tell everyone about them!

I've used his gear for years. Nothing but positive results from around the world. Iceland, patagonia, high sierras, etc. Bomb proof, warm, and everything I need.

In my honest opinion, Ben does make the best gear. He pays excellent attention to detail and as a UL hiker himself, he also understands our wants and needs and can translate those into his gear well.

How did it turn out? What do you think of the 8D vs the 10D now that you have some miles on it (durability, down leakage)?

We had a pretty mild winter, below average snow pac. You'll should have nice conditions for your trip.Not to dry, and pretty standard river crossings.I look forward to your vids from the trip. Safe travels.

Thanks for the info. I think the biggest thing I am worried about is elevation, although I feel like I have a good plan for acclimating (3 days, and 4 if you consider our first day of hiking is only 5 miles) and I will be using Diamox. Besides this I am worried about mosquitoes and sunburn! lol... Anyway, thanks for watching! :)

I was up in the sierras last week at a bit over 8,000 ' and the mosquitoes were horrible, so don't forget your head net and DEET !!

Great overview. I need to pick up a new down jacket this year or next. Will look into this one. I also like having the sleeves long and tend to get a bigger jacket for that. Many years being a runner, that's an old runners trick to pull your sleeves over your hands to keep you warm the first few miles till you warm up without the need to carry gloves.

I would definitely suggest talking with Ben about getting a custom jacket. Being able to custom fit it to you should not be over looked... especially when you can manipulate that fit as you see fit (lol)! If you get one makes sure you let us know what you think about it! :)

Hey Sticks. Sorry to hear that you did not feel well enough to finish. I was wondering at this date if you had finished and was near that fergusion fire. Its due a lot to your planning and me not getting the lottery from Yosemite that I am doing the same trek you had planned. I am leaving August 26th and be on the trail from Cottonwood Lakes on the 28th day of my permit. I wanted to ask you about gear. I am going solo. Some advice would be great. Of course the weather should be different at the end of August. I am carrying the suntactics. Did that work for you? I also have the bearikade weekender. Was that enough room for the food? I am also going to Onion Valley but arriving on Labor day so I am am staying at the Mt. Williamson Motel. They are picking me up and dropping me off and holding my resupply. Again, sorry but you got up whitney and forrester & kersarge. That's good in anybodys hiking resume. Thanks for all your planning that has helped me tremendously. I know that Yosemite is evacuating some area's at the moment... maybe in a months time they will have it a bit under control. As for the Suntactic's, it worked better than I expected! Most days I would get to camp early enough to unplug the fully recharged battery pack and hook my phone straight to the solar panel and let it top off before going to bed. Sometimes I even had time to charge my watch with the panel too... as a result, I could have gotten away with a much smaller battery pack. If I were doing it again, I would consider going with just a 5000 mAh battery. This would still be a bit bigger than I would likely need, but a few rainy days could result in less time to recharge items. As for the Weekender, it was about perfect for me with the food I was carrying (most about 5.5 days). My buddy carried a BV450 but he didn't have all his food and garbage in his can for the first couple of days (there are a number of places with bear boxes along the trail though for over flow). I do have a gear talk video, but I want to redo it... maybe I will get it redone soon. And thanks for the kind words... I was bummed I had to leave early, but I am happy with the part I did... not an easy section considering the elevation and that freaking chest cold!

Stick's Blog awesome! Thanks. Very glad to hear about the suntactics. I will be charging an IPhone X 2716 mAh. My Sony fed x3000 action cam & my Garmin Inreach Explorer. I have a RavPower 10000 mAh. Too much? Oh & that InReach gets me over the hump when I miss my family. Being able to text back & forth gives some comfort at the end of day. Thanks

Yeah, all those pictures I see you posting looks like a box baffled jacket would definitely be welcome! I would definitely suggest to at least talk with Ben to see about getting a jacket made... I don't feel like you would be unhappy... And yes, only a week!!! Woo hoo!! :) I know you are getting excited too though....

I agree, he is a good guy. I have camped and hiked with him as well and I can say that he is passionate about making his gear. That is evident in the gear too...

Thanks for watching, and they are both nice jackets... and pants too! And yes, the booties are great... I have bought 3 pair. Gave the first pair to my son and bought me another pair with 100% overfill... also bought a pair for my wife. If you don't have a pair I would suggest picking some up to give them a try! :)

It is very nice to be able to wrap up in those warm soft clouds of downy goodness when it cold outside! Assuming it isn't wet... I take a lot of care to make sure it stays dry though, and Ben does use the "water-resistant" down too!

Why did you change from quarter to full zip and which do you prefer after having both?
@SticksBlog
@SticksBlog 6 жыл бұрын
I didn’t really change... I like the half zip with a little more down for colder temps. The full zip is a little nicer in slightly warmer weather because it vents more and isn’t as warm. If I had to pick one I don’t know which I would pick... lol. They’re both so warm and comfortable.
