"The U.S. Army confirmed that Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) was indeed awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge by mistake, a pin Nehls has continued to wear despite it being revoked in 2023.
CBS News did a deep dive into Nehls’s military record back in May and found that “his Combat Infantryman Badge from Afghanistan was revoked from his service record in March 2023 because Nehls served as a civil affairs officer, not as an infantryman or Special Forces soldier. The congressman continues to wear the Combat Infantryman Badge lapel pin on his suit.” The CBS investigation led to other news outlets looking into the story and NOTUS spoke to several GOP House members, all veterans, who had tough words for Nehls.

my dad was WW2 VET that was the medal that meant the most to him. never spoke or bragged about what he did in Europe. The Combat Infantry Badge separates the men from the boys. When he knew he was dying that he told my brothers and I some the terrible things soldiers in battles do and have done to them. He was only 18 when he went in the Army. I’m a retired army infantryman and was awarded the combat infantryman badge. It pisses me off he’s been whining like he has. Also, he knew from the moment he was awarded it that he didn’t qualify and should have spoken up. He wasn’t an infantryman at the time it was awarded. That alone disqualified him. As a soldier, I would never wear wear my military awards/badges/rank outside of my uniforms. Would I put the certificate I got with them in frames on the wall? YES, I would, because I earned them. I have been awarded Combat Action Badges, which is what you get when you're neither an Infantryman (CIB) or Medic (CMB) but saw direct combat on deployment. I never served, but have known people who did. Combat vets who were in Vietnam and Desert Storm. A co-worker who was a combat medic for British Special Forces. They never bragged about their time in combat. It was a mix of "well it was just something I did" to stories that took a couple drinks on a dark night to get out of them. Then I had a buddy who was in the Army and I said "thank you for your service." He said "hey man, I was just a clerk. Just doing a job. Most people in the armed forces are just there doing a job." This guy was just doing a job, and he thinks he's some kind of hero?

As a veteran, I know the military runs on paperwork. Admin personel serve a very useful purpose and are vital. Wear the badges and medals you were rightfully awarded. Don't wear anything you're not entitled to and earned.

There are dozens of important, non Infantry jobs in an Air Assault battalion. Here's a crazy thing about combat: you know you're in it when you're in it. If you're a REMF who never heard shots exchanged playing for pink slips, you don't wear a CIB even if you're awarded one. If you cut your hand on a C-rat tin, and you're awarded a purple heart, you don't wear it. And you don't wear jump wings if you haven't jumped out of a plane. This is all very simple.

actually that's not correct. The Combat Infantryman's Badge is only to be worn by infantry soldiers who have been in combat. If he had been in combat as a non- infantry soldier, he would have been awarded a Combat Action Badge, which is totally different that the CIB. There is no way a CIB would be on his official DD-214 seperation paperwork because he wasn't an infantryman. He is still lying

I was a 96B (Intel analyst) assigned to an infantry battalion in Desert Storm. All of the infantry guys in my unit got their CIB and I did not. Why? Because I did not qualify for it since I was not trained infantry; pretty simple really. Sometimes awards are not for you...even if you are an officer, but hey, play the victim card and blame those who actually know the qualifications for awards.
