I purchased my GoPro Hero 2018 used on eBay for $100 and then found out about how it was dumbed down. I was on vacation and was not able to upgrade it then, but after vacation easily formatted the SD card, downloaded from the first link, created an Update folder with the four files on it, and erased all the other folders and files on the SD card. It was SIMPLE from then on. In a few minutes I had a perfectly functioning Hero 5 Black. Amazing. Super thanks for posting this.

Battery life on any device will drop when you pick up the resolution, so this after the hack will give u less battery life on 4k then on standard 1080p 👌

All you need to do is format the SD card you have for your GoPro in your Gopro, then pull it out of the GoPro and use that same GoPro SD Card into the computer to use for the “Update” folder

Just downloaded the NEW UPDATE FOLDER and dropped in a 32gb fat32 sdcard popped it in my 2018 I just bought today on sale for 149$ and now I got 4k 30fps, 2.7k wide at 60fps with GPS enabled. It wount do it. I tried and it just loops for hours coz the 2018 doesnt have the chip for the blue battery. It doesnt make a difference because gopro stopped the updates after that. Let me know if u try it

Yes it will always drop as per all gopros or cameras. The higher the resolution u choose the faster the batter will drop. You can always drop the resolution to 720p if u need a longer record time and bump up the resolution if u have spare batteries or it’s plugged in etc 👌

had issues with gopro booting up normally as hero 2018 after inserting micro sd, fixed it by unziping the folder from UPDATE (patched).zip to UPDATE by going into the folder and extracting the UPDATE folder and deleting UPDATE (patched).zip hope this is helpful to people experiencing this issue :)

In order to use the rechargeable batteries of Hero 6,7,8 we need to update Hero 5 balck to v02.70 , But this isn't happening through the app, and to manually install we need to provide the 14-Digit Serial Number and since our cam is actually Hero 2018, I'm not able to download this update. Jacob Manjon try reformatting the sd card in a computer and loadimg the update folder again, the gopro should have started up on its own after when the firmware is completed, watch the video carefully, you can get the normal firmware of the gopro site as well, just click on their support page and the instructiona should be there, make sure your battery is fully charged and never turn the gopro off during the install, hope it helps, keep us posted 👌

Hey there...I tried and downloaded the firmware ony mobile phone and then later transferred it to the formatted SD card. However, when I inserted and turned on the GoPro camera it does not load at all. I can see the normal screen. Does that really need a computer to download the firmware.Can u please help?

Mr. Xcentric its safer with a normal computer or mac, iv never tried from the phone, try it from the computer because the format might be different so the gopro cannot see it 👌 let us know how it goes

@@brandokally1 since I dont have sd card reader, can I use smartphone act as card reader & connect it to my PC? so I download from my pc, & transfer it to my sd card through my smartphone

Im not very sure, it sounds good but iv never tried that before. Sometimes the files can get corrupt from the phone, so just be abit careful

Hi there @Rui Valentim, try formatting the card in the GoPro under preferences and then go to I/O reset at the bottom of the menu you will find Format SD Card. That should work, please let me know if that helps

Thanks Brando. I figured it out. You have one file missing in your 'UPDATE' folder, the 'fwupdate.txt' file. I did update my HERO 2018 and can confirm that all went well and that I now have a HERO 5 BLACK. Thanks again.

Hey, I am facing some issues with the GoPro Hero post I installed the patch. The quick video is not capturing the video and also hangs the screen. Another observation is that the battery is showing lot of issues too. My cam was charged completely and when I shut down it was at 98%. I started it next day and I got an alert that the battery is low and screen showed only 1%. I connected the charger and straight away I saw that the battery was 84%. This is strange. Is there something that you can help me with ?

Thanks for letting us know, sounds like u have a battery issue actually, not saying that the firmware cant be an issue but i have an original hero 5 with the same issues and changed the battery 🔋 and it was sorted after i factory reset it with the new battery, try it and let me know

I have updated my Hero 2018 to the Hero 5 using this method. Can I update the firmware going forward using the GoPro app or will it overwrite back to a Hero 2018?

I think you can I didn't have a problem with mines. Theres some guys that say that it doesn't update. But worked for us. Not sure if gopro patched it 🤔

Was sold a 2018 which was stated to be a Hero 5. My fault for not being educated. But I was able to update it successfully. So far so good! I only paid 100 bucks for it. Bought it from an older gentleman that only used it once, so in fairness maybe he didn’t know.
