I've worked really hard about becoming more self aware and recognizing my mistakes and actively trying to fix them! It has done WONDERS for my relationships with my horses. They are way more willing to work with me when they don't get in trouble and I show them it's okay to make mistakes, or let me know that I was the one who made the mistake!!

I have a almost 4 year old thoroughbred mare that I want to teach jumping. I do a lot of pole work with her and have let her do some jumping while lunging her. She's very good. I have never taught a horse to jump (but I do have 5 years of jumping experience). How would I go about it?
@kendallsneed17502 жыл бұрын
I’m not a trainer by any means, but I would say just start small and work your way up. Start with ground poles, and then go to tiny cross rails. Eventually, you and your horse will get the hang of it and you can continue to raise the height or jump longer courses
@KandtheBays2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've started with a really good base! What I can say is just take it slow. It's so easy to fry their brains at that age by doing too much. Starting out with a small cross rail or cavaletti is great. Then slowly add a second jump for a line with 6-7 strides to give her time to think about it. Once you've got that down then just keep adding a few more jumps until you get to a full course of 8-10 jumps. Once she's jumping a cross rail course, repeat it with verticals! Thoroughbreds are the most giving breed! So they will usually give more than they are mentally able, and once their brains are fried it takes SO long to get them back from it.

@jermajayjay10922 жыл бұрын
train him. Everytime he takes off turn him in a tight circle until he slows down. Do NOT let him jump if he rushes. not onlyis it bad training it's dangerous.
@Bookishbakercass2 жыл бұрын
I work on counter canter and halt up the rail, the. Move to poles and trot through them with a few strides in between then halt straight. Then after that I move to cross rails at the trot and halt after the fence. Then move up to canter the cross rail and halt at the fence. I continue this pattern til I develop good speed and control. Then when I’m ready I will add more fences in order until I get a good working course at I speed that is reasonable.
@KandtheBays2 жыл бұрын
Thats a tricky question! Haha. With her it honestly depends on her mood. Sometimes she is just so excited for jumping that I have to alter my plans. With my trainer we've worked on halting a few strides after a fence, putting blankets/etc. over the jumps to get her to slow her brain down and look at it. My trainer has even stood in FRONT of the jump until she was a few strides out and then moved out of the way lol. Now, all of that being said, without proper flat work, being able to bend/leg yield, work on a 10m circle, and the horse understanding the half halt, you won't have any luck over fences. Her issue doesn't come from lack of strength or confidence, she just LOVES her job. :)

Have someone put you on the lunge line and start doing a few strides and then back to trot! Just knowing that the horse is connected on the lunge line helps my students feel much more comfortable because they have that added level of security. As you start getting more comfortable work your way up from a few strides to more, and then to full circles. Once you've got it there then repeat that same process but on a circle without the lunge line! :)
