Thank you SO much for these simple and easy tips. I film on a tripod - so many of these amazing features of the camera are not even tapped. I didn’t know about turning them off. Appreciate all your simple explanations, too.

You are very welcome. Turning off features you aren't using (stabilization) will also mean a slightly larger FOV as there is no unneeded cropping being applied to your footage.

Honestly, I'd go with the Hero 11 for the taller sensor, 10bit color and in camera night effects. However the 10 is a rock solid camera in my opinion.

I got fooled by all the DJI promoted, sponsored, affiliated KZbinrs peddling the OA4 and the negativity around the Gp11 over heating. Frustrated me as I wanted the GP11. Within a few days of having the OA4 I realised I’d made a mistake, the quality of footage left a lot to be desired. Clouds, snow, grass and road surfaces simply had no texture (I think it’s an issue with their compression algorithm). Returned the OA4 and now have GP11, quality is obviously better and I’ve so far had no issues at all. There’s a lot of ppl using the camera on full performance setting unnecessarily, the marketing departments from the likes of DJI and insta360 have jumped all over the resulting heat issu to try and sway ppl away from GoPro. Think you’ve confirmed my confidence in GP!

Good info if you already have the camera and are loyal to the brand, but I don't think you should have to stand on your head and jump through hoops. It should just work, especially if these restrictions are not in the instructions.

I really don't think adjusting a few settings can be defined as "standing on your head and jumping through hoops". There was a nice sunset yesterday, I took some photo's with my DSLR. To capture the light rays properly, I had to manually adjust the exposure level and shutter speed. Two adjustments. Does that mean my camera doesn't "Just work" or does it mean that if you want good results, you should know how to use your camera? If I was "loyal" to the GoPro brand, I wouldn't have made a video slating the Hero 9 as a terrible camera (and it is!). This video simply shows you how to stop overheating issues with your camera. Whether you're happy with overheating or not or if you're happy with GoPro or not doesn't concern me. This video is about the facts, what the likely causes of overheating are and how to solve those issues. It has nothing to do with brand loyalty or "standing on your head and jumping through hoops". If you're putting your camera on a tripod, shooting in 5.3K @ 60FPS indoors with Hypersmooth on boost, GPS activated, your screens on 100 brightness........ that problem isn't the camera.

I don't know man, this camera has evolved into a very sophisticated piece of gear. For that reason, the user is going to have to invest some time and effort into learning the camera. If a user just wants plane-Jane features, buy a less sophisticated model or brand.

1000% agree. It sounds like this camera has unadvertised limitations. Knowing to dim the screen else risk overheating is a design flaw and working around a design flaw is standing on your head. A slow or bad SD card, does the camera detect and report that situation? I just don't buy 1/2 what this guy says. I'm in the market for one of these cameras and all the overheating complaints has signaled to me to stay away from GoPro.
@DemonViewLLC
@DemonViewLLC Жыл бұрын
@@revealingfacts4all You're right, GoPro should advertise the limitations, that's how to properly sell and market product. "Does not make coffee, will not vacuum the carpet, cannot be used as an airplane, cannot help you time travel, cannot cook you a four course meal, cannot be used in place of gym equipment etc". You've purchased a high performance model camera, it's up to the user to learn how to use it properly. Thank god there's people on the internet who will make video's showing people how to shoot properly and solve overheating issues they experience. GoPro also give recommendations on which SD cards to purchase AND the camera does display warning messages about SD card speed if you use too slow a card. You should probably do the math though, considering over 30 million GoPro camera's have been sold, what is the % of overheating complaints you've seen and are they from people who know how to film and use their camera properly? At the end of the day, which action camera you buy is entirely up to you, but research the issues properly first otherwise whichever camera you get, you're going to have problems with it.

Hey man I truly appreciate the ideas for reducing the overheating and I do agree with you that many of the high performance settings are unnecessary for many GoPro users. I personally shoot all my videos at 4k 30fps and use external batteries only. I’m outside on the water so there is sun but a little wind which helps. My hero 9 can shoot for 4 hours straight no issues. I just bought the hero 11 and had to buy the volt as it seems it doesn’t like 3rd party external batteries anymore (I tried GoPro labs command for bypass min amp check). Anyways I took it out a few times recently and could only get about 30min of continuous recording before it overheats. I get the hero11 has a better cpu and higher bitrate if I’m not mistaken so I get why it runs hotter but I’m kinda bummed that my hero 9 is essentially performing more reliably. Will try turning off gps and hyper smooth to standard like it is on my hero9, and thanks for these suggestions, but I’m second guessing my purchase. Would the hero 10 overheat less using the same settings?
@DemonViewLLC

The Hero 10 shoots in the same resolutions and frame rates as the Hero 11 and in the same bit rates. It also has the same processor as the 11. If you're Hero 11 is overheating, your Hero 10 will overheat. If you're shooting with external batteries, did you remove the internal battery first? Are you using the original GoPro cable that came with your camera? Would like to know more about your setup to see if we can stop that overheating!

**UPDATE ok nevermind - I watched a bunch more of your other videos about these issues...seems the screen takes a lot of power...I additionally turned off front screen and set back screen to 15% always on (which I need). This seems to have solved my overheating issues. I just did an indoor test running 4k 30fps on super view- no gps, hyperboost standard, front screen off, back screen on 15%, connected to volta with no internal battery and it ran continuously for 2hrs 27mins! basically the volta ended the test...thanks!

@@PeterRanieriII Way to go! Good for you for finding a solution. I think you may be ok with leaving the front screen on once the rear screen is set to 15%, but that will require testing on your part (which is a pain as there's no way to speed up testing). I have both my screens set to turn off after 1 minute so I don't know how much heat the front screen generates. Anyway, good luck with your shooting and don't forget to enter the GoPro awards. Very informative video! i've been using a Hero 5 and a Hero 10 for the last year and just decided to upgrade my 5 with an 11. I've been worried about all the over heating problems others are having but I've never experienced with my Hero 10. I use my cameras to do fishing videos from my kayak and run them on loop recording with external batteries and no internal bats. I've recorded the last year using 720 but since I've gotten the new Hero 11 going to up the rate to 1080 at least. I like all your suggestions for my purpose but not sure about cutting the horizon leveling off since my kayak is always moving and my camera being 3' up on an extension pole each movement is exacerbated 10 fold with side to side movement. I'm thinking either the horizon or the hyper will need to be on during my trips. I'm also recording constantly for 6-10 hours on my trips so would a usb fan pointed at the camera help or making some kind of shade panel above the camera work best? thanks again great video!
@DemonViewLLC
@DemonViewLLC Жыл бұрын
Yeah, fishing is always going to be a tricky one since it involves staying still(ish) for a long time in the sun and you have no idea when the "Action" will happen. Don't forget, the Hero 11 uses the exact same processor as the Hero 10 as well as the same resolutions and frame rates, so the performance will be very similar. The main difference would be the 10bit color mode and unless there's a huge reason to use it (making cinematic video and color grading in post), then disabling it will bring you back to the realm of Hero 10 performance. My tips are basically showing how to prevent overheating and all the things you can do. It doesn't mean you "have" to do them, it's just things you can do one, two, three at a time depending on your usage. So hey, leave horizon levelling on and see how it works out. Don't forget, you can always stabilize in post, so in essence, you'll get the exact same horizon levelling, you're just not tasking the camera with doing it in real time. Reelsteady is the "paid for" GoPro solution, Gryoflow is the free open source solution. I prefer to stabilize in post simply because it gives me manual control over the stabilization and how it's applied. A fan wouldn't hurt, but I don't think it's necessary, not unless your camera is in direct sunlight, then it's worth looking into, although a sunshade may be more beneficial (and it would help prevent lens flare).

You can, but it won't offer you any advantage over a v30 uhs 1 card. Uhs 2 cards have a set of double contacts on them so they can read/write at faster speeds. Not a lot of devices have double contact readers in them. So in this case, your Card will only act as a uhs I card. So you're spending extra money for no good reason as the camera can't take advantage of those extra contacts.

@@DemonViewLLC While I'm inclined to agree that there are setting you can adjust to reduce the amount of processing that the camera does, I think "The GoPro doesn't have overheating issues, it has bad user setup issues" is fundamentally false. If it didn't have overheating issues, it wouldn't keep overheating. Short of having it in direct sunlight behind a window such as mounted on a car windshield (even my phone overheats there when doing nothing at all) that gives it that greenhouse effect, the camera should be able to run reliably with any available options the user chooses to use. If I have to tone down videos to 30fps, reduce the resolution, keep it in the shade, turn off all the available options, and/or only film with the camera in a bucket of ice, then the camera cannot do all the things it claims it can do for any reasonable amount of time. Having batteries that provide lengthy record times or sd a2 cards with massive storages doesn't do a lot of good if you can't use them effectively because your videos are shutting down mid record. This would be like if one of the major motor companies stated that their car had a ton of features, but you couldn't use them consecutively without the automobile being put into limp mode. There shouldn't be a combination of settings that could cause the device to fail and certainly it shouldn't be boasted about on their website as if it was possible to do it as if there is no issue. I'm honestly surprised someone hasn't sued them yet regarding the issue. It's clearly a widespread issue that covers a large variety of their cameras going back several models. While you may have found workarounds to alleviate the issue for yourself and shared it with others (which we appreciate) I feel your statement is false based on the exceptionally large amount of evidence located on the internet about users having overheating issues.
@DemonViewLLC
@DemonViewLLC 6 ай бұрын
@@Zerkini Couple of issues with your comment here. "The GoPro doesn't have overheating issues, it has bad user setup issues" is fundamentally true. If you set the camera up properly and have a clue how to film, even a basic clue, you won't have overheating issues. I've proven this many times and even posted the proof online. If people didn't keep setting up their camera's incorrectly, they wouldn't overheat. I do consider mounting a camera in direct sunlight with no airflow over the camera to be an incorrect setup. If I were filming for a local tv station or on a film set and did that, I'd be fired. The camera “DOES” film reliably if the user knows how to set up their camera and film. Your claim of all the things a person has to do to keep a camera cool is kinda odd as there's quite a number of video's on my channel explaining how to properly set up your camera. Not one of them involves pointing fans as your camera as it's submerged in a bucket of ice water in the middle of the night under a full moon.... Your car analogy is terrible. Most cars can hit top speeds of over 130mph. According to your argument, a person should be able to drive their car at 130MPH all the time without overheating (does this include school zones and 90 degree hairpin corners? I sincerely hope not...). Well guess what, they can't, they require radiators, cooling fans, coolant all to make sure they don't overheat. When they near overheating, older cars will simply break, blow a hose etc., modern cars... guess what? THEY GO INTO LIMP MODE. This effectively forces the user to slow down, let the car cool down and to stop abusing the car and to prevent further damage. In fact, you'll find out with cars, you simply CANT use all the settings consecutively. Try putting the car into 4th gear and reverse as the same time! But but.... it's settings that are available, you should be able to use all settings at the same time!! Try taking a tight 90 degree narrow hairpin corner with 4WD High engaged, see how well that does. In fact, modern 4WD systems will actually disengage when a certain speed is reached or disengage when turning sharp corners. So you're not able to use all the settings consecutively by design... and for a good reason. Even SUV manufactures will have selectable “G.O.A.T.” modes for different driving conditions as each driving condition requires a different setup. Take a modern car off road, even a Subaru or SUV, if it detects there is a drive issue (such as no movement due to lack of traction) the vehicle may often go into limp mode to stop some idiot owner trashing his engine by revving the crap out of it pointlessly. This limp mode then has to be deactivated by inputting a series of codes or performing a reset. Why some car manufactures even include features in their cars that people cannot use without paying a subscription fee to the manufacturer (BMW heated seats springs to mind). Here are the facts: A poorly set up camera will overheat and shut down. A properly set up camera will not overheat and shut down (as both demonstrated and proven). GoPro have shipped over 43 million cameras since their start up, the qty of owners out there with zero knowledge of camera setup and how to film far exceeds the qty of owners who know how to properly set up their camera's and how to film (hence the need for the creation of this video). GoPro let users set up their camera's whatever way they want. Experienced users won't have any issues with this. Inexperienced users will as they have no idea what they are doing, what settings to use for which filming method. Guess what the result is? Inexperienced users will also further exasperate the problem by using incorrect or too slow an SD card (sweet Jesus, if I see one more person buying a Sandisk ULTRA card and putting it in their camera, I swear.... I'll go nuts... well...even more nuts..).

@@peterbooth5571 Your Hero 9 shouldn't overheat that much unless it's in direct sunlight while you're recording. Lowering your FPS will always reduce processor load so that's good. The warning you see is just advising you that your camera is recording in HEVC (High efficiency video codec aka H.265). A lot of newer devices support this, older devices may not, unfortunately I don't have a comprehensive list, however a quick google search should let you know if any of your devices support HEVC. Some Windows PC's may require you to download the HEVC codec from the Microsoft store first (whopping cost of .99 cents). I would suggest you try out a test recording to see if your device handles HEVC. Due to the higher compression it is a preferred way to record, higher quality vs smaller file size. You can also go into your GoPro settings, click on the General tab and then click on "Video Compression". Select H.264+ HEVC. This will mean your video is compatible with new and older devices. If you're not spending hours (or weeks) post processing video for display on 8K cinema screens, you probably won't notice the difference in quality. If you're editing in the GoPro app, you also have the option of exporting your video in H.264 or HEVC (H.265).

Well you should probably share all the settings that you're using on the camera. 60FPS is quite a high frame rate for such a small form camera, especially for a 90 minute soccer game. The Hero 11 (with latest firmware update) has a "Longest battery mode". This will drop the resolution down to 1080P and disable a lot of background functions. @@vilikarac6776 Lowering the frame rate will have quite the effect on overheating, you're literally "halving" the strain on the camera. If you can film in 4K do so. Recording in 1080P isn't a great idea at all. Your camera actually can't record in 1080P, it records natively in a much higher resolution. So when you select 1080P, it has to downsample the image in realtime to a lower resolution and that can affect image quality. So yeah, stick with the 4K, but doing so at 30FPS may be your best bet... @@vilikarac6776 Recording without the battery inside the camera actually improves the airflow within the camera and keeps it running cooler. Also your camera produces great amounts of heat in 4K 60FPS. Discharging an electrical battery also produces a lot of heat. Your battery is also acting like a hot water bottle inside your camera storing the heat generated. So hot camera + hot battery = overheating. Powering the camera externally = much cooler camera.

So basically one of the most hyped features (resolution)...don't use it unless you're ok with the camera shutting down because of heat. Genius. "Hey, your car has a turbo but don't floor it in sunlight, the engine will stop." Lol.
@DemonViewLLC
@DemonViewLLC Жыл бұрын
No, it's a case of knowing how to set your camera up properly and how to shoot. "Hey, your car has a turbo, floor it on a racetrack! But if you're driving through an estate with a 30MPH speed limit, you drive at 30MP which means you're not using your turbo". Pretty sure if your car had a top speed of 200MPH and you drove it EVERYWHERE at 200mph, things wouldn't work out so well. If your car has an RPM limit of 9000RPM, would you sit in the car with it in neutral with the gas floored hitting 9000RPM for 30 minutes or more? Nope, you'd be too busy picking up bits of your engine off the ground after 5 minutes... If you pay closer attention to the video, you'll see that I in fact shot for over 20 mins using my GoPro Hero 11 in 5.3K @60FPS with no overheating or shutting down. Why? Because I know how to shoot and how to set up my camera. It's kinda like having a car with a "turbo".... it's not use having one and bad things will happen if you don't have the slightest clue how to drive. LOL

@@DemonViewLLC I guess we can bat analogies for ever. Lol. How about a domestic car vs an F1? I expect to be able to idle my Honda Civic all day long but an F1 car needs fans blowing over it if idling in the pits for longer than a few minutes. People buying the GoPro 11 (or 10...7 etc) are expecting a Civic but they're getting an F1. GoPro don't provide warnings, so an unsuspecting user can leave a lot of functions on and run the camera at 5k+ and 60fps on his table in a not particularly hot room and it'll overheat and shut down. That's F1 behaviour right there. I've ordered the 11 and intend to use it on my motorbike. I have the 7 and used that in the UK in the summer and even that shut down a couple of times due to overheating. Now I'm in Japan and will be seeing 35c+ in the summer. It'll be interesting to see how the 11 handles that. I won't be going higher than 4k at 60fps and I'll be sure to disable as many functions as possible (despite paying to have them).

@@Panzerlang Actually, you've purchased an F1 car that can be operated as a Honda Civic, so it's a magical transforming car. Point being that when you're on an F1 track, you run it as an F1 car, when you're not on an F1 track, you should run it as a Honda Civic. The "unsuspecting" user who suffers from overheating problems due to it sitting on their table in 5.3K 60FPS with Hypersmooth on Autoboost recording in 10Bit color.... they just need to be taught how to use their camera (without spending years of going to film school to learn shooting technique, cinematography, filmography and how to use a camera, they are not Wally Pfister...)(although since he earns about 40 million a year... that's their loss). So thankfully there's edumicational video's out there to teach them how to solve overheating issues and how to shoot with their camera. Thank god we didn't get into Pizza analogies..... I'm fricken starving....

No matter what other settings I chose and wow, at 1K it even lasts 40 minutes, what power 🤣 My cell phone can do that better. But kidding aside. A test with DJI in 4K and a cheap product for 80$ also 4K and great PowerTools switched on 💪 the camera doesn't switch off because of overheating but after 1 hour because the battery is empty. And by the way: Linux is for free, has also much power tools and is definitive the better OS 😂

I think the gopro 11 black overheats too much. I bought a sandisk 512GB extreme pro. And tried to record in 4K 60 fps but it shuts down on me for overheating in less than 20 minutes. What a bummer. If I had known this, I would have not bought the gopro 11. I am now looking at the DJI Osmo Action 4. We paid a high price for this equipment. It should work as advertised. Even the gopro 12 overheats as well. I read reviews that DJI Osmo Action 4 records for 70 minutes without overheating. I think my next camera would be the DJI Osmo Action 5 because I have to live with this purchase for at least another year.

I've had Gopros for a long time, now I have Gopro 10 and it sucks, I live in Key West and play beach volleyball, the stupid thing when set to 4K 60fps overheats in 5 minutes or less while trying to record the match. I lowered it to 1080 120fps and i got 15 minutes, half footage corrupted. I tried to record inside the house 1080 120 fps and camera seems not to like it at all and shuts after 30 seconds. Now I am recording inside the house 1080 24fps and that works. I have EVO card in it exactly the same as the guy in the video. I usually record very short videos no longer than 1 minute and it's been working fine. But i agree with comments here that i did not buy Gopro camera to record in stupid low 1080 30fps.

Good tips. The camera requires airflow, pure and simple. Ive had it overheat with all settings off except 5.3k and it still lasted only 20min indoors on a cool day. Knowing which mode to put it in and changing resolutions per shot is nonsensical for a camera like this. Overheating ahould never be a thing. Ive lost priceless footage with the overheating issue.
@DemonViewLLC
@DemonViewLLC Жыл бұрын
Any video I record indoors I do in 1080P. Why? Because I'm indoors... there's no epic vistas to be shot, there's no need for additional crops and zooms (because I can simply move the camera or switch to a differently positions camera). Also 90% of viewers are watching on a tiny mobile device which in most cases can't even display 4K. Changing modes and resolutions (and frame rates, aspect ratios, color temperature, light sources, filters, audio sources, camera position and camera angle) is something any professional constantly does during a shoot. So it's entirely expected from a camera like this.
@harold6583
@harold6583 Жыл бұрын
Many of us have settings ready to go, and that include hi-resolution to later crop if needed. Now if you were to say that these are "purpose built action cams and are designed to require airflow passing over them" that would be the end of it. because that's the real truth. But making up solutions based on lowering resolution for tiny screens... what? lots of us need the 4k resolution for our 4k shoots. Pros do not normally fiddle with settings during a shoot because we spend the time shooting! Anyway, to sum up, "These are action cams, need airflow"

@timurjalilov4945 My SUV has a top speed of 110MPH, by your logic, I should drive it at that speed all the time and not limit myself. Plenty of people out there who may not want a 5.3K picture of their face on cam, adjusting to 1080P may prove to be a huge benefit to them. If you have an action camera that's capable of 5.3K 60FPS, then maybe use it in an action environment if you want to use that resolution and frame rate. If you want to use it indoors, sitting on a table in a non action environment, then use it with the settings that will allow for that. It's that simple.

I really like to power my camera externally. I do VLOG on motorcycle, and I like to keep it recording all day. I have a batterybank in my jacket and used to work. When I get home I skip all the boring stuff, and find the good stuff. Now this weekend the camera just started to crash. I recorded for 12 hours, but it crashed so much that I had about an hour of footage when I got home. When it crash, the screen is on, everything looks normal, but I cant turn the camera off and there are no footage. Only option is to pull of mediamod and get the battery out. I have been experimenting with battery and wanted to pull it out to prevent it from charging and generating heat, but it seems that my firmware, wont allow to do any anything without the battery inside the camera. How did you make it work with externalpower and no battery in the camera? kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGTKp6qoj5d7bMU

@@DemonViewLLC You missing my point. The company provides a product and advertsies them a way it make you think you can use it easiely as that. But in reality you cant. Why people see "4k 120 FPS" they think they can use it all the time but in reality it only works in cold environment or you have to set a lower resolution and stuff. If I buy a 4k 120 FPS can, I want to use it as long as the battery lasts. My complaint wasnt on you, it was on the company. @@jacydesica4069 No offense taken, I actually love interacting with people and getting their views. So feel free to agree or disagree with my views all you want, I really do appreciate you taking the time to do so. So my response would be that my car does 140mph, doesn't mean I should expect to drive it everywhere at 140mph. There's a time and place for 140mph and every single moment of every single day isn't it. There's also a time and place for shooting 4K 120FPS. In reality, 4K 120FPS should be used for specific slow motion shots. Heck, Peter Jackson shot LOTR at 60FPS and the movie got huge backlash when it was first projected at that speed (they had to rerelease it at 30FPS) due to the "Soap opera effect" (which is what some people refer to it as). Same with Avatar, everyone hates the 60FPS due to no natural motion blur being present. Even movies that feature HFR scenes to enhance the action are still mastered at 24FPS. So no professional film maker is going to shoot in 120FPS "all the time". Now on the other hand, I'll kinda agree with you by saying I wish the next GoPro had an even higher frame rate option. Some smart phones can even do 960FPS for Ultra Slow Motion. However (if you've ever used this feature) you'll know that they can only do it in bursts (about a 5 second clip that gets stretched out to roughly 40 seconds when slowed down when you include speed ramping). I'd love for the next GoPro model to have this type of option rather than a resolution increase to be truthful. I also think having it clearly defined as "burst" shooting would also cut down on overheating complaints rather than have people trying to shoot for an hour @ 960FPS. Maybe a warning about lighting conditions too based on what the sensor detects.

@@jacydesica4069 Well you caught me at a good time, I had my morning coffee so I'm not grumpy any more... 😄 I just suggested to GoPro that they include a real time burst mode, similar to what they have with timewarp mode. Shoot at 30FPS, but at the touch of a button, the camera can ramp up to 120 FPS or higher for a short amount of time and then ramp back down to 30FPS. Might be the best of both worlds. You get your 120FPS slow motion at the touch of a button, but at all other times you're filming in 30FPS thus preventing overheating.
