On the topic of how much characters jerk around despite being mocap, there is an interesting reason. The capture was done in Japan with Japanese actors. The frame of reference for them is mostly J-dramas and Sentai action shows, both descending from Kabuki theater. This style of theater involves big movements followed by dynamic poses, which can still be seen today. The reason why Kabuki is so influential is because Japan came into the film and television industry relatively late. Established industries like America had already been developing the craft for decades to find out what works and what doesn't, a luxury Japan didn't have.
