This was significant back in 1998. Hinckley had also done the 60 Minutes interview shortly after he became President in 1995. What you see here is the days of cable tv. The internet was just starting to be opened to the public. The church itself had little to do with the internet. Times have changed and people get much of their information about the church from the internet. Few people in 1998 had cell phones. Smart phones were years away. When GAs misspoke it was hard to refute them when access to information was limited.

Doctrine is never-changing. Principles like polygamy do change. In D&C 132 the Lord talks about polygamy being righteous when he authorizes it and being sinful when he does not authorize it.
@BunnyWatson-k1w2 ай бұрын
He might have meant doctrinal in 1998. You have to remember this was not heavily focused on the the 1990s. I never remember a gospel doctrine class, priesthood lesson, or General Conference talk where polygamy was mentioned. Today the church had to admit it due to full access to the internet.

When I was a believing member, I was always in awe with GBH's conviction and towering testimony as he spoke from the pulpit and in interviews such as this. Now, it's easy to see and feel the condescending tone in his voice and defensive responses, in addition to being evasive in some contexts. And why does he laugh after saying he doesn't doubt the truth claims of the church?
@manuelvillalobos6822 ай бұрын
I was on my mission when this happened. We were gathered in stake centers to watch this interview. It was one of my first epiphanies that something was wrong with the church. Hearing his blatant lies and seeing how everyone around me pretended not to notice. Then at the end hearing other missionaries state how "their testimony" was strengthened. It dawned on me that just a year prior, this is what some of those Heaven's Gate people must have felt when having second thoughts about drinking the poison. Being surrounded by a herd of brainwashed people who couldn't hear the lies anymore. I felt nauseous every time Hinckley spoke from then on. Little deceitful piece of garbage, I thought, while his popularity among members soared. Yet I had to keep it a secret, which proved to turn me into a keen observer of LDS leaders statements, looking for those passive aggressive lies. Oh, I found out that's the very fabric of that religion.

"You cannot divorce private behavior from public leadership. I have an accountability, I carry a trust that's incumbent upon me, yes." Wow, that did not age well. The church's leadership have been working hard to spread the idea that they are just men, and that their church duties are completely separate from their personal deeds. Does, "Joseph Smith was a fallible man, but..." ring a bell? Also, the way he downplayed polygamy was masterful. That dissertation was worthy of a Washington politician.
