One of my favorite stops on our honeymoon was Split, Croatia. We were staying in a hostel near where the "downtown strip" was. Stopped at a large fish market and got the freshest skate I will ever see. With that and some other goodies in hand, we went back to the hostel. Made dinner for four(decided to include staff). We found some prickly pears the day before on a hike in a national park and made a pico de gallo to go over the skate and oysters. We ate, drank, and watched overproduced music videos (shorty how'd you get so fly is still one of my favorites). That day, and the day before are forever a part of the lexicon that was our European adventure. Croatia is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Dear NatGeo, I wonder how long will it take until you realize our oceans are dying and we will be next in line, literally. Fishing kills. You show fish being hooked, stepped on, blunted and killed. A company which should defend animal lives. But no, instead, you choose to show them getting harmed and cooked for pleasure. Lame.
@Eucalypten3 жыл бұрын
@Leon Except that when you make a video about it and making it seem joyful (which it probably was for Gordon) you promote the act of killing and eating more fish. This is effectvely an advertising for eating eel, the population of which has been reduced by 90% or more since the 1970s. That's wrong and it is especially problematic coming from National Geographic which supposedly exists to show, support and protect the naturally living world.
@Eucalypten3 жыл бұрын
@Leon I agree that small scale subsistence fishing of eel is not the problem. My point is that I think that it is a problem that the issue of overfishing of the European eel is not adressed at all in the clip, because it effectively legitimizes eating commercially fished eel. The whole clip is an attempt to show what it is like to fish AND eat eel and I think it is naïve to believe that people would not feel inclined to buy some eel after watching a cooking show about it. The uncomfortable truth is that we cannot eat more european eel because then it will sieze to exist. There are almost none left. The extermination of the european eel is rapid and it needs to be opposed now. To reduce and recycle ones waste, eating meat from local farms, and not going to McDonalds are all worthwhile, but those acts do not justify fishing, buying and eating eel, which contribute to its extinction.
@AnkardTan3 жыл бұрын
a bigger problem for me is censorship. These people have been fishing like this in the Adriatic for a thousand years and that's part of the culture, so how would you film a tv show about a local cuisine without showing how it comes from the sea to the table, fresh, not from some kind of fish farm is beyond me.
@Eucalypten3 жыл бұрын
@@AnkardTan Isn't national geographic doing just that? In what way do you think the clip promotes censorship?
