Extra food is great as a customer. However, it’s financially awful for a restaurant. Having to spend money on boxes, bags, and the amount of food that needs to be purchased to maintain the portions is hugely expensive. So when a restaurant is struggling money wise, big portions are a no-no.

The concern was for the business, not the customers. They basically gave away an entire second meal for free to each customer, so their food profits netted out to exactly $0. But, because of the amount they spend on electricity and water, as well as the money spent on those appliances, and any money owed for banks that keep adding up in interest, they keep losing money because they made $0 profit on their sales for giving away a 2nd meal for free by accident.
