When I was about four years old my father brought home a giant pile of lumber and, from scratch, built us a swimming pool in the back yard. Once it was set up he ran speakers out to the pool from his stereo so we could have a little music while we splashed around. While in later years we played pop radio out there, early on it was all my dad's music. He played this song often. Now I'm old and my dad's been gone for many years. But for the rest of my life I will associate this song with summers swimming in that pool, that my father built with his own two hands. R.I.P., Dad, and R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot.

As the world changes so does the strategy of these evil sick fucks. But what remains the same are the core in country wars that always stoke the fires of hate and division. Money, race and religion. Surrounded by their hot topics and keywords to enslave the citizens into a backwards and horrible train of thought. And there are far too many malleable minds in the United States who buy their ideological bullshit like it is the hottest toy for Christmas. Bring back the 70s through the 90s. Race was rarely spoken of, all this hate didn't exist then. Our government is on task to take over how the population thinks and acts. Both parties. I was however part of the peaceful part of the 90s and those were great times....instead of finding ways we were different we relished in the ways we were the same and life was good.....I believe music influences how a nation lives...and while there are some beautiful promises like rap mixing with country or pop being married to jazz....there will never ever be a time again where instruments were played ...bands vibed out to 30 minute versions of 5 minute songs. Men were men...women were women and not what the new generations are doing....I can imagine one day I'm fourty now when I'm maybe 70 the stylings 9f Gordon Lightfoot will make a comeback and it will be a revolution in the black community to stop being so self centered as we are and become more open to everyone around us and their ways.....one day hopefully.... Bob Dylan on Gordon Lightfoot: “I always thought that one man, the lone balladeer with the guitar, could blow a whole army off the stage if he knew what he was doing; I’ve seen it happen,” Dylan wrote. “Gordon Lightfoot, every time I hear a song of his, it’s like I wish it would last forever.”

In April my dad played "If You Could Read My Mind" for me from his phone. He sat and held his phone for me to listen to the entire song, and then told me how he and his brother heard Gordon would be in Oregon so they scrounged up the money and bought tickets to see him play that song. My dad just passed on May 18th, and I played that song back for him as he passed. What a treasure my dad left me with... I wish I had known of Gordon's music much earlier so we could've talked about it, but I'm so grateful my dad opened my eyes, ears and heart to the world of Gordon Lightfoot ❤

I am sixty three and started listening at age 15 or 16. My memory isn't the same, but my appreciation for Gordon's songwriting/lyricist talents only grows. My opinion, but in the world of songwriting he is the number one poet of the last half of the 20th century. Such as Softly, "Softly she comes, whispers the breeze with her passing; in secret love she is laughing. Softly she comes in the night." Gordon can write and sing a picture better than anyone I have heard. He does it in so many songs.

I can smell a pine forest with a breeze in a full moonlight dusky sky. No exaggeration. He’s a wizard.........a past master of evocative music and lyrics. Trying not to sound corny but.......this song is magic sorry. When Mt. St Helens exploded the lone man who stayed on his property until lava covered him must’ve had this enchantment in his soul going on and couldn’t mobilize.

Im not sure why , but it really moves me to tears today at age 47. Haven't seen my wife in near 4 months now. Maybe it's the red wine. But the music really bring it out. Im dying up here. This song first got my attention way back in 1974. I went into a pizza parlor for take home. This song was playing loudly on a juke box. There was only one other person there. He was sitting alone, probably around my age (mid 20’s) just “staring” into space. He ignored me when I walked past him. I felt he was having a moment. I sensed the atmosphere. I felt a pang of sadness for this man. When I hear this song l’m strongly reminded of this encounter. God bless us all and our impacting memories of life.

This song was released a decade before I was born, yet it also reminds me of a time when my life was a bit more unstable, closer to the edge.
