Speaking as someone who has struggled with hoarding in the past (it never got "make the local news" bad, but it definitely got "get in trouble with your landlord" bad), this episode should have never been made. They should have realized pretty early on that Karan has actual neurological problems, gotten her some professional help, and never aired any of this footage. There's plenty of mentally competent adults willing to make public spectacles of themselves for cash and clout. Enough that we'll never run out of trashy reality TV content. I hate it when children, extremely desperate people, disabled people, elders, or people who don't speak English very well get humiliated on camera because they either didn't know what they were getting themselves into, or the TV appearance was foisted onto them by a narcisstic boss or relative.

Okay so, having dealt with this with my own mother, I can 100% tell you that actually removing her from the situation is damn near impossible. In MD at least, you can't force a person into mental health treatment if they have dementia, unless they're unable to care for themselves. Which sounds broad, but to give you context, my own mother got evicted, squatted in her dead mother's home, stopped bathing and cleaning, refused to let anyone inside the apartment, but because she was capable of feeding herself, the state refused to do anything. All while she was hearing voices that told her that people were breaking in every night. So the reality is, if the son told his mother 'you can't be here' she'd just end up on the street. She's not fully there, but there's no way to help that situation legally speaking without her agreeing first unless she's literally homeless, and maybe not even then. That's how hard it is to get someone mental health help if they refuse to go willingly. And keep in mind, my mother was arrested for breaking and entering because she thought her neighbors told her to come into their home. The police were just like 'it's not illegal to be crazy.' So honestly, the only thing to do here would be to pretend to run the place and not actually run it.

people forget that gordon’s not a therapist or a mental health coach. he’s there for the restaurant, they receive a full breakdown of the recipes he’s provided too, they get to keep all the new equipment as long as they manage to stay open for 6 months after filming.
@cassdun6197 ай бұрын
But that's why we critique the show, these people obviously need more help than that if it's to stay open. Let alone, some episodes frame it like he fixes the family issues or the person's personal life.
@davidtrainor21157 ай бұрын
@@cassdun619sure, but it’s not Gordon‘s job to do that or to get the care arranged. Gordon is there for the restaurant only; if there’s other issues at play that’s beyond his scope.

@davidtrainor2115 then why be there and make money off of their personal lives 🤷♀️ the acknowledge the restaurant fails because of the personal lives and pretends he helps their personal lives when in reality he doesn't. I think the name of Canadian comedian was Tom Green (he was married to Drew Barrymore), he used to do a segment on his show where he approached random people on the street. He always seemed to pick people who were...odd. I was watching with a friend who thought it was hilarious until I said "That could be my mum.". On the sanitation test as you called it, the reason why you do it in such spots is because they're indicative of the overall state of cleanliness. In any decent accommodation you have a full-on deep clean at least every once in a while, if it builds up like that, it's indicative that that just doesn't happen and so overall the room is always cleaned as a rushjob.

If the staff has trained with the new menu, it's on the cutting room floor. On the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares, Ramsay is clearly working with the chefs to get some basic items on the menu, showing them how he does it making sure they know how. US, they focus on the drama.

The thing that gets me about the test Gordon does is that it’s for a food cooking environment. It’s clean *for a prep area* which is a much higher standard than the *floor*. It just feels like gilding the lily, finding any reason to insult rather than actually help. Hotel hell is great in a lot of ways but it definitely is much more staged and color-by-numbers than kitchen nightmares
@davidtrainor21157 ай бұрын
The floor should not be filthy enough to read *803* no matter what: the device he’s using is for prep areas, but can be used in residential areas; the safety margin for that is 100-125.

In defense of the son, we have no idea how he grew up. Maybe financing his mother's independence while keeping a distance is the most he can do for his own sake, she's clearly has issues with hoarding and seems very narcissistic AND is proven manipulative. As the child of a narcissist, it's a twisted trauma, tearing yourself away from these situations is like splitting atoms: incredibly difficult even under ideal circumstances (like having access to therapy and being financially independent) but still possible. I'd say national television isn't an "ideal circumstance"
@mathiasstrom77904 ай бұрын
I feel ur the only one who looks at the situation for what it is. She does not seem very kind and seems very fake and tense all the time, almost like she believes she has to be calm and collected all the time to make people believe she is someone she is not. Alot of people found her unsettling but they seem to just be taking the piss. I always found her odd and very insidious for some reason, but now I know why. Narcissism is highly misunderstood and people have this image in their heads that narcissists are easy to spot. They believe that they are always very extroverted, confident, arrogant, out-spoken and obnoxious, which may be the case with some but most of the time they are insecure, bitter, manipulative, strange, unsettling, spiteful and generally just brings a negative energy to situations that people can feel but they dont understand why, almost like they carry a dark cloud around them all the time. All narcissists are highly insecure of course since thats what drives their behavior but they arent all obvious. Their abuse, as you said and have experienced (im sorry you had to go thru it sucks major dick) is often insidious, toxic and it feels infectious, like they project their misery unto you for no reason whatsoever. They keep you hooked by controlling you in ways that makes it extremely Hard to get rid of them, even if they are physically gone they are still present in your mind and soul. They suck the life out of you and leave you wondering whats wrong with you even thou there is nothing wrong with you at all. Its them thats the pathetic bloodsucker that has to suck your soul out of you to feel safe and okay with themselves. Its really quite dark and wicked and it pisses me off so much that people have to suffer these kinds of parasites. Sidenote Sara seems like she is completely nuts aswell lol

Removing her from the Inn will absolutely affect her mental health in a positive way. It will create a healthy balance between her work and family to allow her to enjoy that space away from her work. She had no other option, wasn’t presented one and couldn’t afford it I believe, and now that she does and she has a chance to make it all work I think she will, especially with the positive changes. The makeover makes a ton of sense too from a psychology standpoint as well. Karen had no standard of self care, no boundaries between work and personal life, and was making herself believe she was happy with that lack of care for herself. Giving her that makeover (haircut, new outfit I believe, maybe a manicure or smth) both will likely inspire her to start a new level of self care, however small it may be (enjoying hot showers, face masks, painting nails, crafting she enjoys) and start her on a path to being more healthy with her habits.
