When you say "stands for" that implies Sambo is an acronym. Your following words do not make a matching acronym. It is like saying "Fly stands for elevated mechanical object." it doesn't make sense. I think it’s obvious sambo is more realistic which is why it works better in mma. Bjj has a lot of rules protecting them on positioning which in a fight they would not have that protection. Bjj is more reactionary and sneaky which is why when they pull something off in mma it seems like they tricked their opponent into a submission while the sambo guys are forcing their opponents into a bad position and then taking the that arm or neck home. While there are bjj guys who do have aggressive tactics they usually are incorporating wrestling and sambo moves within the context of grappling. Obviously bjj that incorporates hitting is more realistic and is newer on the scene. Gordon Ryan uses the more aggressive techniques and sneaky tactics better than anyone which is why he is the best. He transitions and incorporates more versatility but always is the more aggressive and efficient player. He doesn’t just hangout in the more defensive positions for obvious reasons but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand how to. At this stage you better be learning all three styles: sambo, wrestling and bjj to be the best grappler or you will be out matched at some point

Sambo is just another name for Russian jiu jitsu and jiu jitsu is just another name for judo. Both Brazilian jiu jitsu and Sambo have basically identical origins. At the end of the day, it's all just grappling regardless if it's judo, wrestling, or jiu jitsu it's all the same shit using the same principles of gaining a mechanical advantage over your opponent. The only thing that matters is how the individual practitioner invests their time. If you train for a specific rule set then you're going to get good at that rules set. This debate is so pointless.

Something he said which was extremely accurate was in submission wrestling Sambo guys can be better. This is something people don't realize, there is a huge distinction between grappling and submission wrestling. ADCC and IBJJF are grappling rulesets not submission wrestling because there is no penalty for being on bottom. In fact even in ADCC, you can pull guard, lay there for 4.5 minutes and do virtually nothing and then sweep the guy and win the match. All you have to do is look like you are trying sweep to not get called for stalling. However the top guy cannot do that, he must pass or he won't get any points. If you say it's a realism thing, then put on gloves and try to stay on bottom for 4.5 minutes. Being on top should constitute points even if it's in guard.

If you just want to protect yourself. Jiu-jutsu and boxing is the key You don’t want to wrestle someone on the street. And you can always run but if you get caught boxing is best
@AusarisTV

Speaking as a Boxer/Judoka, I respectfully disagree with you on that. Boxing + Judo or Boxing + Wrestling would be wayyyyyyyyy better than Boxing + Jiu Jitsu because any form of standup grappling not only gives you the power to dictate the fight how you see fit, it also helps with your balance and takedown defense as well, which are things you will almost certainly never learn in BJJ. BJJ guys are notoriously easy to takedown and most of them are also god awful at takedowns as well. We can agree to disagree on whether or not one should initiate grappling in a street altercation . I personally believe that you should play it by the situation, in some cases yes you should take them down and in other situations no you shouldn’t. I won’t argue with you on that or try to change your mind as to why initiating grappling in the street can be viable but speaking as someone who wrestled in HS and is an active competition brown belt in Judo, my Wrestling/Judo base has made it very difficult for guys to try to take me down in street fights. In self defense situations I prefer to Box, and in any setting, when you’re getting lit up with punches, it’s a natural human reaction to want to grab/clinch in order to mitigate the threat of strikes. You see this all the time in Boxing, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, MMA, etc when one dude is getting his face punched in, he tries to force the clinic to protect himself. Speaking from personal experience, in every single street fight that I’ve been in, almost every single person I’ve fought has tried to force the clinch BECAUSE of the fact that I was a good boxer. Boxing is what opens up my Wrestling/Judo, the two go hand in hand. Meanwhile, I literally know BJJ black belts (and lower ranks) who can also strike very very good but they have all been taken down by random dude bros in street fights. I think a combo like Boxing + Jiu Jitsu isn’t good because if you find yourself using Jiu Jitsu in a street fight especially if you (like you said earlier) did not initiate the grappling, that means that you fucked up a long time ago by essentially allowing an untrained meathead to grab and control you to some degree and take you down to the ground. With a setup like Boxing + Wrestling or Boxing + Judo, no one’s going to be able to take you down unless they’re like 100 lbs + heavier than you. My two cents.

@@IamDude2 that’s not entirely true. I’m just from the hood so I have a completely different outlook on fighting and self defense than (I’m assuming based on your comment) someone like yourself who more than likely grew up in a safe neighborhood. I’m from the Westside of South Central Los Angeles. I’m not a tough guy because I want to be one, I’m a tough guy because I had to be one. Where I come from you have to fight for respect, literally, or else you will be victimized. This type of mindset is instilled in us from early childhood and unfortunately it’s a viscous cycle of dysfunction. Think about that for a moment.

I think the ufc doesn’t have many super high level jiu jitsu guys. It’s usually mma black belts vs sambo guys and sambo guys win. We haven’t really seen someone like Damien mia, or werdum fight a sambo guy. Charles was close but he wasn’t a major jiu jitsu champ, and he’s been subbed by lesser grapplers before. I guess a better example is Paul Craig vs magomed ankalaev and we saw Paul get the tap. But it’s rare to see super high level jiu jitsu black belts fight sambo guys in the ufc
