Gordon Thomson was delicious as Adam Carrington in Dynasty. The actor reveals the part Joan Collins played in him landing the role, and why he believes Joan and Linda Evans didn’t get along. Plus Gordon opens up about his Godspell co-stars and he reveals how a me-too moment cost him a role and his anger at the reporter who outed him - without his permission.
* Please be aware that there were some computer issues at Gordon's end so the quality was affected

I was a closeted gay kid in the 80’s growing up in Colorado, and my last name is Carrington. You want to talk about unwanted attention and weird experiences! Our phone number was in the phone book and my parents had to make it an unlisted number because strangers would call us to prank us or ask stupid questions. We were just thankful that no wackos ever showed up at our house thinking the Carrington’s of Dynasty were actually a real family and we were somehow related.

He is a wonderful man , an excellent actor and I am so happy he is sharing some of his life experiences instead of keeping it all to himself and nobody knows the other sides to this human being , his integrity , his history, in his own voice of words . Thanks to Mr. Thompson for revealing what he has .

I recall first seeing Gordon Thompson on Sunset Beach playing AJ Deschanel whom of which I played also when my siblings and cousin wrote our own Sunset Beach script lol. There was something about him I liked, but after watching Dynasty it was clear how diverse he can be. Shame he wasn't available for the dynasty reunion of 1992, I recall also his appearance in the remake of Poseidon in 2010.

This is what Mr. Thomson told the Daily Beast in 2017. He actually says that he is comfortable discussing the issue, but also talks about his own journey coming to terms with his sexuality. “It’s not something I’ve ever announced. I’m assuming that people know, and now that I’m my age that’s fine.” “I don’t go out of my way because it’s my generation, I think. I’m probably as homophobic as any gay man alive because of my background.” “While I was growing up it [homosexuality] was a crime, and then classified as a mental illness. It was not until Pierre Trudeau was prime minister of Canada when I was 23, 24-years-old, did it cease being a crime.” “It was not until I was nearly 30 that it stopped being classified as a mental illness in the US. So you’re dealing with that. And the shame, the breathtaking lack of self-esteem, has only just begun to seep out of my soul.” --- His comments in the 2024 interview do not support his statement that he was “outed” in 2017. If an interviewee does not want to speak on the record, they typically tell the journalist: “This part of the conversation is off the record.” I know the Daily Beast writer, and I have always known him to be a journalist of the utmost integrity. I don’t understand why Mr. Thomson is saying he was outed. 1. He was very experienced dealing with the press, and 2. He talks openly about his complicated relationship with his own sexuality in the 2017 interview.
@quantanamo

In other words, there’s a big difference between being “outed” and having regrets about giving an on-the-record interview after the fact.

I loved, Dynasty and still do. And I am a big Gordon Thompson fan. As a gay farm boy who was outed to my bigoted family and farm community, I was appalled, terrified, vilified, so much so that after caring for my mother ( who had Alzheimer’s/ dementia) for a year a half, was not even allowed to attend her funeral. When people say to me that it’s easier now being gay, I say: “No. It’s just more unacceptable to show your open contempt for gays because of rules in the workplace and laws that make discrimination more of an issue.” But the TRUTH is: Get the wrong leaders in office, or a series of bigoted leaders with an agenda and our few rights would be squashed to the delight of most people in this country. Cheers to you, Gordon! 🥂 Thank you for your story and courage. ❤

Yes. I live in a city that was a refuge for so many coming out back in the 60s and 70s and the tales of horror of being kicked out, disowned were heartbreaking AND the occasional outing of someone like the guy who saved Reagan when that woman shot him and Brady. The good Samaritan was outed by a local editor. His family then disowned him. He was a well known columnist. The gay good samaritan lost his lawsuit of course because columnist was well connected politically and with city hall. The good samaritan drank himself to death in an SRO from heartbreak. Gordon Thomson. Wow!!!

I luv luv luv Gordon/Adam. And I felt such compassion for Adam, and the meaner and more dastardly Adam was the more compassion I felt for him!!! Omg of all the stars on Dynasty, Gordon is the one I’ve always wanted to meet in person,,,just so I could tell him how much he affected me, all through my teens, as I watched Dynasty RELIGIOUSLY. Luv luv luved it when Adam was with Kirby (Kathleen Beller). I thought Adam and Kirby were such a magical paring. There was SO MUCH territory to cover with Adam/Kirby. Sure wish they had explored the two of them more. And how amazing does he look??? He looks AMAZING!!! My lord! Still has all that gorgeous charm and sexiness!! But what a treat to hear Gordon talk about his early career, and his personal life,,,, I had no idea he was outed by someone other than himself,,,and his wonderful days on”DYNASTY”! As an Actor, and as an iconic Sex-God, Gordon Thomson has always been in possession of "IT".----The nearly indescribable "X-Factor" that is known as true Star Quality. And, one of my earliest of fond memories, was watching him star within "The Polka Dot Door"; a children's show that is a great study of teaching a young actor to believe in the power to Imagine. One of his episodic recreations of a children's book about a king who wanted a little butter for his piece of bread--clearly--remains among my happy memories. That show--for me--was captivating and educational. And, like his other performances that I've been blessed to see (some of which were not mentioned because of presumed time-constraints), all of them remain--happily--"with" me. I thank-you for this exceptional interview.

Watched Dynasty in college and beyond. Loved to hate Adam, incredible casting, he even LOOKED like he could be Joan Collins's son. But what Adam also had was Joan/Alexis's archness and camp...which is something the actor brought to Adam, unknowingly I believe because there they were in this interview. We all just assumed the actor was gay playing straight DECADES ago! And when I lived in WeHo in the 90s, I heard stories of a couple of Gordon's escapades there in his heyday. My point being he was IN?! Not only did I never hear about this asswipe little "journalist" outing him, I never knew he WASN'T out lol! None of this is meant as criticism. Gordon Thomson was the perfect actor for Adam Carrington & played the hell out of him. He legit carved a niche for himself in pop culture history!

I wished that this excellent interview could have mentioned or touched upon Gordon Thomson's 1969 movie with Don Stroud EXPLOSION.

Al Corley as Steven was master class. What a loss to the show. ah the stupidity of that decision.

I also was bummed out when Al left and Jack replaced him. But Jack grew on me and the scenes of him and Adam's fights were outta this world! I hated they replaced the first Fallon too.
