Just found this older video by accident ,Gord, right when I am at the early stages of making my own design of doughnut chuck, to allow rework of some of my earlier boxes to a better standard. You've given me lots of valuable tips, thanks. I know I shall make a better job of it now! I am using long nuts in the base plate, and sets of alternative length threaded rods, tightened from the front, maybe with domed nuts for safety. I have various shapes to deal with, including some boxes requiring new threaded inserts owing to aging. Too many old projects needing attention in the light of experience, or just finishing so as to keep the shop tidy! Bernard.

Gord, Thank you. I have been using jam chucks for my open face bowls and doing two part bowls with a decorative ring for my tight mouth bowls to disguise the split. I have been wanting to turn a tight mouth bowl from a beautiful oak burl I have and have been reluctant to add that decorative ring. This is exactly what I need (OK that and practice hollowing a tight mouth one piece bowl). The soft plastic hose as a lip guard (and added grip) is an inspired addition. On mine I went a little further and added a leather disk to the back plate. Then drew my rings on the leather by first touching it with my skew then a pencil. This, I hope, will also add to the grip and protect the top face of the bowl.

Gordon, thank you for the video. Great project and great way to hold on to the bowl. I have been using the padded pins in the adjustable jaws, but I'm always concerned that it won't hold. With your method, it can't goes anywhere. Much better way to finish the bottom of a bowl or anything else where the bottom needs to be finished. Thank you.

I have the same kind of chuck but I glued and sunk T nuts where you use wing nuts and that makes it a bit easier for my old stiff fingers. It works great.

Just a couple of comments. When I made mine (several years ago) I glued a piece of natural white rubber on the face of the back plate and used strips of rubber through the hole fastening it on both sides . I like your use of the tubing as a better solution. I also used several sets of carraige bolts (differing lengths) with the head toward where i'm working. I didn't want any sharp things to watch if I could avoid it. Cost slightly more money. I often find I can use the rubberfaced back plate without the donut on the front if I bring the tailstock up to hold it in place until almost all excess material is gone.

Bottom finishing with cole or long worth jaws can get quite exciting. I just made a donut hold down and felt very secure doing those bottom finishing cuts. 6:29

Hello, Thanks for that usefull tool ! nice job :) Tips for those who haven’t a digital angle drawer: You can get perfect 60° angles by using the beam compas. Just set the compas lenght to the half diameter, then put the bit at the top of the first line you made (diameter). Draw out two marks at the intersection with the external circle you draw before, one on the top, other on the botom. do the same on the other side (diameter line) Join these marks with the center of the plate, and you’ll get six perfect 60° angles. compas setting rules: The half diameter gives you six 60° angles The full diameter gives you three 120° angles (must move the bit to the new mark you made, like stepping on the plate with the compas) The diameter divided by 1.41 gives you 90° angles (square shape) The diameter divided by 1.70 gives you 72° angles (Pentagon shape) ect... Sorry for my bad writing, I’m not english speaker... (I’m Belgian ;) )

Good video. Two suggestions. Use foam on the back plate to protect your surface and use t-nuts instead of wind nuts. Better protection for your fingers

+nava1uni Since I made that video I counter-sunk for the nuts so that isn't a problem anymore. The foam is a good idea but I found that putting foam on the plate made it hard to see when I was close to centered. By drawing the rings on the plate and then using tape to protect the surface of the turning I can see what I'm doing a bit better. I appreciate the suggestions! Take care, .....Gord

Nice video. Another option is to use round-headed bolts or carriage bolts. Those would be far less damaging to ones hands or fingers on contact than non-countersunk hex bolt heads and are easily found at the local bigbox hardware store in a number of lengths. Obviously, countersinking would be ideal. There is no requirement that the two rings be made from the same thickness of plywood either. The bottom piece should be thick (for stiffness and to allow room for countersinking, faceplate screwsm etc.) but the top pieces can be thinner since, at the end of the day, you will probably have several top rings for different bowl dimensions. Lastly, some people line the face of the bottom plate with adhesive neoprene or some other sort of padding to protect their pieces.

Great instruction. I was wondering if it would also be possible for the inside plate (nearest the headstock), if a shallow bowl shape could be usefull for holding pieces, and have that covered with 1 or 2 layers of non-slip material to protect the work piece. Could also chamfer the inside edge of the outside plate to help hold pieces and give more surface area for grip and stability. Might have to try that when I get around to making my own.

Hey Gord, I just finished making my new donut chuck. I ended up using a piece of 3/4 inch UHMD for my backing plate and put 1/4-20 threaded inserts in it instead of using the carriage bolts I suggested in my previous comment. Now I can just get 6 machine screws of the appropriate lengths for whatever the height of the bowl/platter I'm turning the tenon off of. I'll let you know how well it goes.

Nice video... here is a suggestion you may find useful. Rather than use nuts on the front side, perhaps you can use TEE NUTS to ensure nothing sticks out on the front face. Tee Nuts can be countersunk just a bit past the front surface and make things just that much safer. Also I think the Tee Nuts would hold better too as they have a larger head. I hope you for one of your followers can use this idea... Cheers....

First question, did you ever remove the 2 sided tape from the runner, and if so, when? The second question is regarding the adjuster board. +Tommy Schutz Hi Tommy, No, I did not remove the tape. I did not want to take a chance that the runner would shift even a small amount and saw no reason to remove the tape as it's not in the way. With the runner screwed down there is no reason for it to move. The adjuster board is 2-1/2" wide and 3/4" thick. Hope that helps! Take care, .....Gord

Wood Corner I had to use the spindle sander first to take off a little on the outside because it was too large to turn without the edge hitting the bedways. I explained it in the video so you must have just missed that fact. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate the support.

Hi Gord - Found your channel recently and have really enjoyed your videos. I would guess at some point I've seen or heard of a doughnut chuck but the usefulness never really registered with me. I'll definitely be putting one together soon. I had a thought while watching you center the piece. Why not mount the base on the headstock and mount the piece on a tailstock chuck adaptor while cinching down the top plate. I picked up an adapter about six months ago and never anticipated how much I would use it. Very useful accessory.... Keep us the good work!

Gord Rock Hi Gord - I watched your new video - thanks for the shout-out! My condolences on the loss of your friend. That's a beautiful urn you made for him. I probably should have been more specific in my earlier comment. I use the chuck adapter in conjunction with the Nova live center system. It's probably the best investment in lathe accessories that I ever made - I use it all the time. I saw Steve Lindsley use one along with a set of cole jaws to add rings to a segmented project and now that's the only way I do it. super simple and super accurate. Thanks again!

I just linked here from one of your newer videos. Quick question: when you were making the first disk, while the wood was still a square-ish shape, could you not have screwed two squares together, cut both rounds at the same time ? Make your 60 deg lines and holes and all the sanding - to both at the same time ? Obviously any smaller 2nd disk would have be done separately. I have only watched a few of your videos, but I am learning so much, feels like my brain might be on fire from the excitement. Thanks so much !

Just stumbled across this video today and this is the first I've heard of a donut chuck! I rather like this idea and will build one for myself at some point. :) I am wondering, would the bowl tend to self center itself when the bolts get tightened down?

I wouldn’t count on it too much, Jennifer. Once the bolts are lightly snugged up it’s not difficult to get the bowl centered. If you have left a mark on the center of the tenon you can bring your live center up to make sure it’s properly centered. I hope you will like having one as much as I do. Thanks for watching! Any recommendations if you don't have a reciprocating sander to get it nice and round? Would a trim router work? I'm not sure if it would tear out the plywood or not.

Hi Nat, I'm sure you could use a router with a circle cutting jig and do a decent job. If I were to do that I would use a compass or something to mark just inside where the router would be cutting and use a utility knife to score the top and bottom layers. Maryke, I believe the donut chuck is safer. It is a good idea to countersink the nuts on the tailstock side of the chuck to keep your fingers safer. I had not thought of that when I made the video. Real nice instruction and we all need one of these. I was wondering though there is a guy on ebay that makes these using a cnc but he has a curved slot in them and calls them a different name, have you seen those and would you recommend one?

Marc Lewis I haven't looked on eBay for anything but you may be referring to the Longworth Chuck. It's a totally different system that uses rubber bumpers much like the Nova Cole Jaws. If that is what you are referring to I would recommend them but only by their reputation; I've never used one myself and have yet to try building one. Another thing on my list of things to make. Too many things to build and too little time to do it all!!! Thanks for watching!

made a dougnut Chuck...cheated a little...made ...the doughnut ....the back used an extra aluminum sanding disk was 12".....thanks for the great tip....don't have any of the vise chucks working on a shopsmith 10er.....love your channel watch all your shows .......thanks
