Gordy is a legend. I did his precision rifle class a few years ago. It inspired a lot of builds and rebuilds of previous projects. From beginners to lifelong builders, you will find value in Gordy's classes. The stories he tells between lessons are amazing. Also, his wife provides cookies!

I did a week long one-on-one class with Gordy a couple of years ago. Under his instruction, I built a .300 PRC rifle that is right on at 1000 yards. His classes are well worth the time and cost.

Former student of Gordy's. Cant say enough about his wisdom, experience, and teaching. He is a true craftsman in our industry, a legend, but a humble, salt of the earth, approachable guy. I need / want to take his class again, there is so much to take in. -a side note, on day one when Gordy says to try to keep the chit chat to a minimum, please do. You don't want to waste a minute when you're in such a productive environment. Thanks to Gavin as well!

I've done very little machine work about from school so I'm not an authority at all but I noticed Gavin said "World class classes for work class prices" or words to that effect. I thought his 6 day long class was cheap at $1700.... Not break the bank by any means.

Gordy , For someone that has never run a lathe or done rifle chambers what equipment would you recommend for the first time builder and lathe operator ?
@gordygritters2291

I always tell people the buy as good a lathe as they can afford - it will be money well spent. You don't have to have the highest quality and highest price lathe to do great work. While it is wonderful to work with a big, stiff, heavy extremely high-quality lathe, you can absolutely turn out very good work on lighter-duty lathes. I've done it many, many times over the years when teaching private chambering classes at other people's shops over the years. I've done this on so many different lathes, both on high-end expensive lathes, as well as most of the different inexpensive lathes like the Grizzly and PM machines. These lighter lathes still universally turn out very good quality barrel and gunsmithing work as long as you use top quality tooling, proper procedures, and work within the capabilities of the machine - so I never hesitate to recommend them if that is what the person's budget can afford. The main things to look for in a lathe for gunsmithing and barrel chambering is a good quality lathe from a reputable manufacturer, a large enough spindle bore to allow doing barrels through the headstock, and it really helps to have a fairly narrow headstock for doing short barrels. There are other ways to hold, dial-in, and chamber short barrels which I cover in my classes, but it just makes it easier if the headstock is narrow already. Some lathes like the Grizzly gunsmiths' lathes and some of the PM lathes come already set up with an outboard spider for doing barrels through the headstock, but most other lathes can be easily modified to incorporate a spider into the outboard end of the spindle - I show in my classes exactly how to do this. Hope this answers your question.

When you mentioned stray vibration causing the bullet to go in a random direction, that made me think about the Tacom HQ structured barrel concept. Do you have any experience with it? What's your opinion?
@gordygritters2291
@gordygritters2291 5 ай бұрын
I've not worked with the structured barrels, so I'm afraid I am not able to give an informed opinion on them.

Former Gordy student here - If you're interested in getting started... take the class. Just take it. It's CHEAP compared to the cost of everything else you need to do this type of work properly. Even if you have no intention of buying a lathe/mill and are just a (wanna be) pro shooter, take the class. You'll learn a lot!
