I've got a Berghaus GoreTex jacket that's 25 years old and I've maintained it these last few years using exactly this method (Techwash and then Tech Direct). I did it most recently last week and the feeling you described of being out for the first time wearing it and seeing the water beading off it is absolutely spot on! I even took a wee photo of it 😆 Great content and thanks for sharing

Great straight-forward and step by step format. I agree that owning and maintaining quality equipment is very satisfying. Particularly on older jackets I always check the waterproof taping on the seams. I had a mountaineering jacket that was twenty years old completely re-seamsealed by the manufacturer (a labour intensive process) at no cost. I have used Toko brand products in the past with great success but it is hard to get in Australia. Nikwax products are the benchmark though in my opinion. Great videos for beginners and more experienced hikers alike. Great job Mowser.

Thank you for the very clear and straightforward presentation, you have made what I thought was possibly a quite daunting task seem instead very doable, I’ve ordered some Nikwax to give my gear some better targeted TLC. May even have to invest in that dryer that I thought I didn’t need. So refreshing to get this type of info with an Australian perspective, keep up the great work.

Thanks for watching and for the kind comments! While a dryer isn't essential I feel it does help. I remember first washing my jackets and sleeping bags back in the day and I was so worried I was going to destroy them. Just take your time and it will be all good!

Great video mate. I remember the anxiety I had around my expensive GoreTex jacket. I was too worried that I'd break it or ruin it in the washing process. I use now use Mont raincoats. Their Hydronaut Pro fabric is proper bomb proof. Although it's heavier (745g for the Mont Odyssey Jacket) it's 3/4 length (goes to mid thigh) much stronger, more durable, and is just as breathable as GoreTex . They have just come out with the Mont 'Supersonic' Jacket which is the same fabric but in a 480g hip length jacket. Only thing is that 1) It's only hip length and 2) no pit zips for ventilation.

Thanks for this and your other tips as well. I am curious to know if spraying my backpack (or other gear) with the waterproofing spray will make it more waterproof (of course use a packliner in addition).

You're welcome! I have not seen it in practice but spraying your backpack with waterproofing spray may help?? But I also have no idea what effect it would have on the fabric. In theory it should work but especially if it's a newer pack, I'd probably contact the pack manufacturer first to check.

Just washed and re-proofed my north face jacket. Used the text wash and then tx direct after. Had a problem with the tx direct in the fact that it left sticky balls/boogies on the jacket. Apparently after tech wash you need to do an extra rinse cycle. 🤷🏽‍♂️. I think I will use your method of the spray next time. Good video. Cheers mate.

You're using Nikwax for basically ski jackets, do you find other products are as good?

I've tried Grangers once or twice and didn't really notice a difference but I do tend to stick with Nickwax 90% of the time as it is what I have always used.

Here I was about to buy a new gazillion dollar Beta LT cause I thought it was cooked. Gonna give this a try, hopefully it returns some of its former glory. It is almost 10 year old now but I don't use it as much or in the conditions like yours. As an aside, do you know if the effectiveness of arcteryx insulation degrades over time? I swear it isnt as warm as it used to be. And can you apply this DWR spray to stuff like the Atom so it beads?

If you've never given it a clean and retreatment then hopefully this brings it back to life! I have several old jackets that I have retreated and have found they perform pretty well after especially if you are on open tracks with minimal scrub. Funny you mention the Arc'Teryx insulation. I have noticed that my down Cerium LT doesn't seem as warm as it used to be. I don't think its so much degradation but despite a wash it doesn't seem as lofted or warm anymore. It's nearly 10 years old. I actually just purchased a new Norrona Down jacket and I think my Cerium will now be passed on to one of my kids as the Norrona Faltekind is a great jacket (review coming soon). I also have a couple of synthetic Arc'Teryx Jackets (Atom LT and Atom AR) and they definitely still work and perform the same as the day I bought them (both around 7 or 8 years old).

You can use whichever gore tex wash you like
