Gorilla glass is not scratch resistant against the most common and prevalent material there is and that's SAND. All it takes is a few grains to land on your phone and a quick wipe afterwards to give your screen a nice deep scratch. If they make it to withstand sand then I'll be impressed.
@davidflores909
@davidflores909 9 жыл бұрын
***** Well it greatly depends on where you got the sand. Anyway, there is one material that can survive unscathed virtually any sand you might rub into its surface (unless you crushed diamonds and made sand out of them) and it is Sapphire. Linus already said it in the video actually, but just look up for "Scratch test Sapphire" here on KZbin and you'll see yourself.
@JacobHillSBD
@JacobHillSBD 9 жыл бұрын
That might have to be another material. As you should know, glass is made from melted down sand. Sort of like how a knife sharpener can sharpen a knife, sand can scratch glass, due to them still being structurally similar on an atomic scale. At least, I think so...

Jacob Hill sand contains quartz which is 7 in scale of hardness, normal glass is 5.5 in the same scale that's why sand scratches glass, for the glass to be less scratchy is has to have another material on it.
@frtard
@frtard 9 жыл бұрын
+JOSUÉ ISRAEL REYES MUÑIZ Sand, glass and quartz are are made of primarily the same thing; silicon dioxide. What's different among them is their structure, residual stresses and additives. The strength is greatly affected by the structure. Gorilla Glass is an aluminosilicate glass where the surface of the glass is placed in a large degree of compressive stress. Surface flaws get essentially closed up. It's the same idea as tempered glass, but instead of heating it past the transition temperature and a quickly cooling it, it's boiled in molten potassium.

Gorilla Glass as Linus said isn't perfect, my beautiful Nexus 5 got a scratch on it from a plastic trash can. I really don't think the glass that they send out the manufacturers is as good as they bring to these shows or tend to lead on. This is the first time that any of my cell phones have gotten a scratch on the screen and none of my previous phones had any sort of glass. I did get my first ever screen protector for the Nexus after I scratched it though, in the hopes of concealing the scratch and preventing any further damage. Good video Linus.

Important detail is that while Gorilla Glass can crack, it will still protect the actual display from damage most of the time, which is a real money-saver since the display is usually the most costly repair on a phone and it's usually better to just buy a whole new phone.

@2:14 made the video worth it. Even though I liked all the tech stuff to. I rarely see a joke on a short show like this that doesn't come across as lame. On any of the channels I watch. Got the first smartphone I plan on keeping. I don't think it uses gorilla glass though. It is a lot nicer then I originally though such a thing would be. I even switched the service over from my old cell phone so I wouldn't have to carry that around any more. A lot of people keep telling me I need data. Seems useless to me. The wi-fi on it works well enough. I don't need wi-fi while I am out anyway. I tend to go out to shop, walk, or visit friends. Not to surf the internet, or look up weather reports and such. I actually wanted the thing as a all in one. Had no plans to actually use it as a phone at all. Was glad that a friend gave me a old one didn't have any use left for. As is, while out, I can read my kindle books on it, listen to a few mp3s, or take pictures of interesting things. The use as a phone when needed is nice. I only ever used 10 minutes a month of my cell sevice any way. So wouldn't really have missed it much. Turns out smatphones are a lot better then I originally thought they were.

I have had mixed results with this. On the one hand, it is difficult to break or fingerprint. one day I got out of my truck and my nexus 7 2013 fell out onto CEMENT. ON THE CORNER. ouch. It didnt break, it hardly even damaged the tablet's plastic case. Very impressive! An ipad would have shattered into a million pieces. However, a week later, i come home to see that my tablet (had been in my hoodie pocket all day) had 1 hairline crack from left to right (in landscape). anything under the crack didnt respond to touch and the cracked area kept "ghost touching" . i had to unplug the digitizer and run the device off an OTG mouse. All day. A COMPUTER MOUSE FOR TOUCH SCREEN. A repair cost me $100 bucks. ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! this was JUST for the lcd and digitizer (which has the worst digitizer on the planet) and i put it in myself. Conclusion: It works decently well. It CAN be scratched rather easily, and it is POSSIBLE to crack it. I will give it to apple, although apples shatter much easier, they can be run over by a car and still work fine.

I think most of the gorilla glass phones have an equally strong and scratch resistant etc, screen as my Nokia Lumia 520 does. I've got one minor scratch on it, let it fall a couple of times and no damage at all. That while I get the impression that if you drop a gorilla glass phone at the same angle and height it would break.
